Day 3 -Sunday - Sept 2, 2012 -Juneau Today was our Juneau port of call. Unfortunately, it was a rainy day in Juneau. We took a tour to the mendahal glacier. The tour was a 3 hour one including transportation, so we didn't have a lot of time there but it was nice to see the glacier. It's amazing at how it has been around for so many years but is gradually receding due to global warming. There was avery informative movie in the visitor center. There was also a high powered telescope where we could see a mountain goat on the side of the mountain. There was also a chunk of the glacier ice there to touch . It was so clear. After gettting back to the town of Juneau we walked to the Capital ... read more

Juneau is much like Ketchikan when it comes to the town facts. It rains 300 days out of the year, it’s also an island and it’s the 3rd largest city in Alaska with 30,000 people. There are a few differences. Juneau does host a local university which averages as many students as PurdueUniversity according to our guide for the day who attends the college. The main difference between Ketchikan and Juneau is the gold. Juneau has MountRoberts which has 400 miles of tunnels left over from the gold mining days. The mine put out close to a billion dollars (today’s price) worth of gold. It appears there is still gold left in them there hills. Permits are being filled to continue the mining gold. The dirt removed was used to build up the local city. The ... read more

This morning we arrived in Juneau around 9am to partly cloudy skies. We quicky left the ship and caught a bus out to Mendenhall Glacier. The face of Mendenhall Glacier is only 12 miles from downtown Juneau. We hiked out to the closest point to the face and witnessed the power of Nugget Falls. During the hike we saw the beginning of the sockeye salmon run and a porcupine climbing up a tree! The salmon were so interesting since they were blood red. We had never seen a porcupine in the wild so this was a lot of fun to watch. We didn't expect to see one climbing to the top of a tree! When we arrived at the falls, which are just off to the right of the glacier, Dylin couldn't resist climbing the huge ... read more

Wednesday June 27th, 2012 Taku Harbor to Juneau Juneau was only 20 miles from Taku Harbor and I could seen the cruise ships before we even entered Gasteneau Channel. We found moorage fairly near downtown and we had just finished tying up when Kira said, “OK, can we find the bookstore now?” We did walk to the downtown area mingling with the thousands of cruise ship folks. Kira found her bookstore, which should keep her occupied until her birthday anyway. The Juneau Volunteer Band played under a gazebo and when they struck up “Stars and Stripes Forever” the crowd gathered, marching, tapping and cheering. We docked in front of “Drumbeat,” the boat I met in Foggy Bay and Dave gave me the lowdown on Juneau. Thursd... read more

Tuesday June 26th, 2012 Ford’s Terror to Taku Harbor We took another white-knuckled trip through the Ford’s Terror Narrows at high slack this morning. All the low-water rocks and shoals that were visible yesterday were underwater and the only thing I had to follow was yesterday’s track which was more accurate than the outlines of the chart. This time I made GPS marks in case the track gets erased. The anxiety was worth the chance to see this remote place of beauty and we were the only boat there. Setphens Passage was calmer than predicted although the chop was building by the time we turned into Taku Harbor and tied to the public dock. On shore are the ruins of a salmon cannery and I read that before that there was ... read more

After gorgeous weather and blue skies at the Hubbard Glacier and a day of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay we headed south. Being here just left us in awe...we hit such incredible weather and it is difficult to describe such raw beauty when nature reveals it so stunningly. The snowcapped mountains, glaciers and blue green glacial waters with the large floating ice cubes were quite the combination. We felt so lucky. We got quite a few incredible photos and videos and was able to get video of the Marjorie Glacier calving. Here as well there were birds sitting out on the ice incuding an eagle. So hard to judge distance on water. There was one wall of mountain that looked like it had many faces carved into it. We walked miles on deck. In Skagway the ... read more

Alaska was amazing! We boarded in Vancouver and spent the first full sailing day going up the inside passage. We didn't expect the boat to move so much as it was so big but you definitely get quite a bit of sway going on when on the open sea. It is much smoother in the fiords and inlets where the swell is smaller or non-existant. The scenery for the entire trip was just spectacular. Up the inside passage you had the coastline of Canada on one side with the snow capped mountains. We were never too far from land and there was always a forest covered coast line or mountains to gaze at when on deck. We spotted plenty of spouts from whales on and off during the trip but nothing more until Glacier Bay. The ... read more

Trip to Alaska Part One – June 2012 - Juneau to Ketchikan Intro I have always wanted to visit Alaska. I have made numerous business trips to Ketchikan, but, they were, well, business and I really did not have time for more than minimal sightseeing around Ketchikan. On these trips to Southeastern Alaska, I learned that it was beautiful, it rained a lot, and that I wanted to come back. My wife and I knew we wanted to take a special trip to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Unfortunately, we did not have the time for some of our dream trips such as Australia and Southeast Asia. Knowing my interest in visiting Alaska my wife kept up-to-date on the travel news and noted that Innerseas Discoveries, part of American Safari Cruises, was now doing Alaskan cruises on ... read more

Trip to Alaska Part Three – June 2012 - Juneau & Ketchikan Intro This is the third of a three part series. This part focuses on our “bookend” stays in Juneau, with a little bit about our partial day layover in Ketchikan. Part One focused on our trip from Juneau to Ketchikan through the eastern passage and Part Two focused our trip through the western passage from Ketchikan to Juneau. 31 May 2012 – Thursday – Arrival After three different flights, and a long day of travelling, we had a beautiful arrival in Juneau . Even though it was almost ten o’clock in the evening, there was still light and we could see the mountains with the snow on them as we approached the airport. We were pleasantly surprised at baggage claim. My wife’s ... read more

Woke up to another beautiful day as we come into Juneau, Alaska's capitol. Juneau can only be reached by air or water, so it is interesting that they chose this to be the capitol. It is the largest state capitol by land area, and the only one that borders a foreign country. Today we are heading out for another bike ride - this one near Auke Lake. The van picks us up and we head north up near the Mendenhall Glacier. The highway runs for a number of miles in either direction, then abruptly stops. We unload near a little chapel on the lake, a very picturesque place and I'm sure very popular for weddings. Our guides take us on a pretty (and fast!) ride along a trail all the way to the glacier. We stop ... read more
