June 4th, 2012 4AM and Fran, Maurice and Linda are up and off to the airport for their trip to Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre), in the State of Chihuahua, in the north of Mexico. Linda and Fran spoke often of doing this tour and finally, it was happening. When we stepped off the plane and onto the tarmac in Chihuahua, we were immediately struck by intense heat. Though only 8AM, it must have been over 30 degrees Celsius. We were greeted by our tour operator and driven to the the City Express Hotel some 30 minutes away. Chihuahua, the largest state in all of Mexico, has a very diverse landscape including a large desert, many different mountain ranges, very arable farm land and also significant ranching country. The state borders the US states of New ... read more

We slept well our last night in Chihuahua. The dodgy room had a strangely relaxed feel to it, the rough wood floors polished by many years of bare feet and Chihuahua boots were cold, but the bed warm and comfortable. Our room was at the end of the building, down a long hallway, next to hard-working little gas heater which kept the few feet just outside the door at a comfortable temperature. Handy when you were searching for the keyhole in the cold. The free wifi in the hotel would only work if I sat out in the stairwell, but there were some handily placed couches there, possibly for the purpose, possibly for a pitstop for inebriated guests as they struggled up the stairs from the bar below. Which was playing some very decent trance and ... read more

Coming in to Creel, Chihuaua at just over the far side of 700km since I left Bisbee Az. At 6 am this morning was a bit jarring. My hands are still shaking and trying to feather a clutch, twist a throttle. I found a place for cheap with dinner included, hot and ready (thanks lonely planet for coming through in a crunch). I gorged it down as the last glimmers of pink faded into deep blue over the hills to the west. I’ve generally enjoyed the shock of leaving a cool alpine or coastline for a barren desert or viceversa as I meandered across the States. But as I strolled down the main drag here in Creel, it was almost all I could take. It didn’t help that there was a tricked out sixties Chevy pickup ... read more

I look up from my book to see at M16 pointed at my knee. A cast a concerned look up further and see that it is hanging off the back of one of the train guards. He smiles at my stupid, tired and starled face. 'Hola' In say. The views from the train are stunnningly beautiful as it winds it's way slowly through valleys, past cliff faces and lakes. The train follows a gurggeling, bolder strewn, tree lined river. We drink beer, laugh and take it all in. Arriving at Pasado Barrancas at 3 pm, an hour later than expected. The hotel is perched on the edge of Copper Canyon. The dinning room and bedrooms afford fantastic views of the jagged, cragged, dirt, dust, rocks and trees that extend over the horrizon. Tiny farm shacks dot ... read more

The BA customer service call center is open between 6 am and 8 pm UK time so we wait until midnight Mexico time and call them from our hotel room. I ask them to call me back on the hotel phone. I expect that it will be a long call and do not wish to be paying a pound a minute to rant at them. When they call me back I tell them the story of our quest for replacement tickets and ask how we can resolve the situation. At first the customer service operator suggests posting the tickets to us. I point out that this is no good as our flight is in a few days time. She is not sure that she can help but says she will call the ticketing office and talk ... read more

Hi all, another photo backlog. We are currently in Zazatecas, pretty close to the centre of Mexico. We got a 11 hour overnight bus from Chihuahua so are pretty tired, but did manage to have a good look around town. It´s a must see place if travelling through here. As far as cities go it´s by far the nicest so far. Very beautiful architecture to be seen everywhere you look and incredible hilly landscape. Photos from here still to come unfortunately. Arlene, if you and Benj stay here then the Hostel Colonial in town looks really good and came recommended. We opted for the hotel by the train station as have to get up at 4am again to catch the bus to Guanajuato. Both feeling a bit under the weather, blah. Things should ease up a ... read more

Hi there! Just an update with our latest experiences. No photos this time as Rob has got his camera and as usual I can´t access mine from an internet cafe. I´ll have to get another CD made, in Chihuahua hopefully. Well we left La Paz after 2 nights. We had to get up at 4am to make the 5am bus to the ferry terminal, which was about 20kms out of town. We were told we had to be there 3 hours before the departure time of 8am, but we thought we´d aim for 2 hours before. Oh, the optimism! We didn´t even get on the ferry until 9am, an hour after departure time, and it didn´t actually leave until 2 hours after that. They were not very organised to say the least. There was also a ... read more

Hi Guys!!! Firstly, Mum and Dee, thanks so much, messages are getting through. Sorry that I havent actually emailed as such but we have been packing the days with so much stuff that it is hard to get a minute on a computer. Love youz!!! I am being a little list-like and writing a couple of different entries so that points turn up on my map. ¿Points on a map are just like lists that dont run down a page, arent they? Its just a collection really. When last we spoke we were just about to head off for the Copper Canyon. In the guide book it said that the Copper Canyon, in size, makes the Grand Canyon look, well, frankly, a bit puny! We decided to take the bus to Creel, which is where the ... read more
