A final blog about our trip. I am cheating somewhat and writing this from NZ but we couldn't find any internet cafes in downtown LA. Our last 4 days in Mexico were nice and relaxed. We went to some beaches, bought some souvineers and hung out with a nice Australian couple that we had met in Cuba and bumped into again. They had a much nicer hotel than us so we enjoyed a dip in their pool and some drinks with them. Rob also went to Chichen Itza, an old Aztec pyramid about 2 hours from Cancun. I just couldn't bear [View Full Entry]

Well finally an update about Cuba. Itīs been a couple of weeks as the internet access we were able to get over there was very slow and expensive, and we heard from a few people that all internet use is monitored so I thought Iīd wait until we were back in Mexico. Where to start... Cuba was an incredible experience and one that I highly, highly recommend if you ever have the opportunity. A very brief history: Cuba was colonised by the Spanish, who eliminated the indigenous population that lived there previously. They also imported slaves from Africa to work the [View Full Entry]

they wanted their photo taken too

Hi again! Firstly Iīd like to report that we are both feeling much better. Once we had antibiotics they started working really fast, whew! We caught a 6 hour overnight bus from Campeche to Cancun last night and arrived bleary eyed and half asleep at 5.30am. We have a massive and comfortable hotel room with 3 beds and an enormous shower. Tomorrow we catch our flight to Havana and will be in Cuba for 2 weeks so I imagine we wonīt have much opportunity to access the internet then. The drive from Mexico City to Campeche was amazing. We slept through [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Well we managed to make it out of Mexico City a bit worse for wear but are hopefully on the the mend now... We arrived in Mexico City after a 6 hour bus ride from Guanajuarto to be absolutely bowled over by the sheer size of the place. I guess in land span it isnīt that different from sprawling Auckland but instead of suburbs with 1/4 acre sections there are just miles and miles of densely built up development. Itīs a city of 20 million people in the greater metropolitan area, is covered by a blanket of smog, is [View Full Entry]

Hi all! Well we caught an early bus from Zacatecas to Guanajuato. We had to get up at 4am as the lady told Rob tickets would be on sale at 4.30am. Then she refused to sell them til 5am so not sure what was going on there. We were sitting in the bus terminal feeling pretty sleepy and grumpy, right next to a donkey childrens ride (you know, the sort the kid sits on and it moves around and plays music). It kept firing up with some jingle and repeating the same phrase in Spanish every 30 seconds. I was honestly [View Full Entry]

Chihuahua

Hi all, another photo backlog. We are currently in Zazatecas, pretty close to the centre of Mexico. We got a 11 hour overnight bus from Chihuahua so are pretty tired, but did manage to have a good look around town. Itīs a must see place if travelling through here. As far as cities go itīs by far the nicest so far. Very beautiful architecture to be seen everywhere you look and incredible hilly landscape. Photos from here still to come unfortunately. Arlene, if you and Benj stay here then the Hostel Colonial in town looks really good and came recommended. We [View Full Entry]

Hi there! Just an update with our latest experiences. No photos this time as Rob has got his camera and as usual I canīt access mine from an internet cafe. Iīll have to get another CD made, in Chihuahua hopefully. Well we left La Paz after 2 nights. We had to get up at 4am to make the 5am bus to the ferry terminal, which was about 20kms out of town. We were told we had to be there 3 hours before the departure time of 8am, but we thought weīd aim for 2 hours before. Oh, the optimism! We didnīt [View Full Entry]

Hi all, here are some photos from my camera that Iīve been unable to upload until now, and some more from Robīs camera. We are in La Paz for our 2nd night after a 5 hour bus ride from Loreto. Weīve decided to forego travelling 6 hours return to see Cabo San Lucas as it looks very touristy and full of high end hotels and golf courses - not quite on our budget and seems a bit cheesy. Tomorrow morning we catch a bus to the ferry terminal at 5am, ouch. The ferry leaves for Topolobampo on the mainland at 8am [View Full Entry]

Well here we are in Loreto after a 6 hour bus ride across the peninsula from Guerrero Negro. Weīve decided to stay here at least 2 nights because it is BEAUTIFUL. At last! We came through more spectacular desert and the view of the Sea of Cortez as we came down a windy road was incredible. This coast is much more beautiful and more blue than the parts of the Pacific coast we saw. Loreto is a lovely little colonial Spanish town. Itīs just gorgeous - full of colourful little Spanish style houses and with pretty paved streets with ficus archways. [View Full Entry]
