Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Our Air North flight from Dawson to Whitehorse.
Tuesday August 26 - Thursday August 28 We arrived in Whitehorse earlier than scheduled due to the flight from Dawson. We took a ride on the waterfront trolly, checked out the visitor center and the local museum. That evening we enjoyed the Frantic Follies. On Wednesday morning we visited a local animal reserve and that afternoon met our friend Charlene who treated us to a tour of Whitehorse. Winter comes early in the Yukon the first snow of the season has already frosted the higher elevations around Whitehorsee. That evening we gathered for our farewell dinner. We said goodbye to Sherrie [View Full Entry]

There is relatively little to say about this next bit of the blog... i think the pictures are far more comprehensive. Ultimately We are heading to Alaska-- having driven for three days we should be arriving there on friday, early in the AM if all goes as planned. Aside from having to change the battery in my car, everything has been going really well and we are thankful for the lack of complications which do abound this far from modern civilization. For me personally this is beginning to take a turn in terms of personal significance due to the fact that [View Full Entry]

Hello all! We left off in Inuvik! Our stay of almost three weeks in the small community, was a great experience. The most unusual feature of the town (in summer) is that it doesn't get dark... We sat out until 3 in the morning to watch the sun not set. It simply bounces off the horizon and goes back up. It's kind of weird having no sense of what time it is. On our last night in Inuvik we went for a stroll along the river front and got invited onto a house boat by a bunch of locals, we then [View Full Entry]

Looking across Valdez Harbor to Trans Alaska Pipeline Southern Terminal
This was the view from my tent site in Valdez. The pipeline terminal is about 2-3 miles across the harbor. No supertankers in sight but according to locals, up to 3-4 tankers "fill up" every day.
Day 15 (July 12, 2008) Goodbye Valdez, Hello Yukon Territory (Again) As you recall, I spent the night at the Sea Otter campground right on Valdez Harbor. I awoke this morning to bright blue skies with just a whisper of white clouds. The air was crisp and you could see your breath…calm and the harbor was like a sheet of glass. Hated to leave this setting but I had a deadline to make to get close to Haines for my ferry ride to Bellingham. I slept very well in the cool night air. I had asked the night before where was [View Full Entry]

There’s a land where the mountains are nameless, And the rivers all run God knows where; There are lives that are erring and aimless, And deaths that just hang by a hair; There are hardships that nobody reckons; There are valleys unpeopled and still; There’s a land — oh, it beckons and beckons, And I want to go back — and I will. -Robert Service, from Spell of the Yukon Well Faithful Reader, I have returned from yet another excursion into the great wild yonder, and while my written recounting of the events that have unfolded wi [View Full Entry]

It's hard to believe that boats like this once traveled our rivers. It was an era that is associated with exploration and commerce into new territories...Yukon included.
Hi guys, As you an see I am making up time and getting my blog entries posted on the computer. As I mentioned WiFi is not always available. In fact, coming through Yukon, cell phone service was not available. I had to purchase a phone card to call my family to let them know where I am at. When your family does not hear from you and knowing you are in a part of North America where a person can disappear and never be seen again, well, if give a peace of mind. Did I mention that I ran into rain [View Full Entry]

Go North To Alaska...I can prove I was here!

Hello from Whitehorse, the last night of our holidays, we are a day behind oz so it's Tuesday night at 8.20pm. We leave Wednesday at 11.55pm and arrive back in Sydney on Friday morning. Our last travel blog left us at Raspberry Island and we were supposed to do a half day bear view via sea plane in Katmai National Park, home to over 2,000 brown bears and at 3.00am that morning the wind shook our cabin and continued to do so until we we left at 10.00am. Unfortunately we did not get to do our bear view and this was [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Whitehorse after a days run from Watson Lake. The terrain was not as mountainous and scenic as the day before, but lots of lakes and rivers and beautiful nonetheless. The town of Whitehorse is rich in history from the gold rush days, and does a booming tourist induscry. As the weekend we are here corresponds with the summer solstice, it also attracts tourists to see the very long days. In fact, on the night of the solstice, we left Whitehorse on a motorcycle ride that didn't start until 11 PM, and we didn't return until nearly 2 AM [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! Here is what we've done in the last few days. Enjoy! Our route has been: Prince Rupert then to Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park then to Stewart/Hyder (short hwy into Alaska #37A-a must see), then north to Whitehorse, Yukon! There were a few stops in between of course! A big thank you to Todd and Jillian for their hospitality in Whitehorse! All we can say is that the views up here are stunning and breathtaking! See photos. I write this from the ferry docks in Skagway, Alaska (pics to follow when I can download them). [View Full Entry]
