Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Monday Entered saskatchewan after waking in our motel and having the continental breakfast. First stop, Regina - saw the legislative building, university and cruised the city. Although we liked Regina, we left pretty fast because the intersections confused and scared us especially since most of the traffic lights were not functioning for some reason. After leaving and driving around aimlessly for a while - ended up concluding that the little manitou beach - a healing mineral lake - should be our next stop. We drove up there amid thunderstorm warnings - thinking we may see a famous prairie s [View Full Entry]

Hi All, The weather has finally cleared, a week without rain!!! I'm still biking with the German couple, Christoph and Iris. We're presently in Estavon Saskatchewan. We've been fairly lucky with the infamous prairie winds, a few days with North/North West winds, but then we get a break and get a few days with South/South East winds. Also as 3 we get to trade off leads. In western Ontario we took a short cut around Lake of the Woods and dropped into Minesota for a day to get to Manitoba. Manitoba was a treat with no shoulders on the roads, but [View Full Entry]

mel modelling on the sandhills
After our journey to Grasslands National Park, we headed towards the Great Sandhills, located in Saskatchewan. Can you believe that there is a little desert in Canada??? It is pretty cool eh??? The sand was really smooth and it felt soooo great on our feet! ehehehhe...It was a different texture of any sand that we ever touched. It was pretty cool! :) Anyways, we got there, but we didn't really have the chance to explore the place for very long because there was big stormy clouds coming towards us. That is why we only explored the beginning of the Sand dunes. [View Full Entry]

our campsite... surrounded by lodgepole pines
After the Great Sandhills, we decided to head to The Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park (it is a park that is share between Saskatchewan and Alberta). The first thing we noticed when we got to our campsite is the crazy trees, which are called logde pole pines (we think that they might use those trees to built log cabins eheheh). Anyways, we thought they were pretty cool because every tree was super tall, but the needles where only on the top trying to catch to sunlight. That night we decided to hit the hay early and get up early the next day. [View Full Entry]

Fields
We headed down south to see Big Muddy Badlands, the drive was really enjoyable! We had the beautiful Big Saskatchewan sky to look at and the we had the back roads all to ourselves. It was really beautiful in it’s simple way, endless fields and endless sky. Along the way we say all sorts of cute little buggers along the side of the road. Nigel thought that they we’re Prairie Dogs, he was super excited about it. In the small town where the tours left from, we stopped to enquire, but they would have cost us $100 for a tour guide, [View Full Entry]

The drive into the grasslands
We called ahead to see for camping in the Grasslands, and a really nice Woman Collette (who was our tour guide the next day) set us up with everything we needed. Our campsite was unlike any other we had been at so far. It had an amazing view of the park and we arrived just in time for the sunset. It was in an open field up on a hill beside an abandoned convent. The mosquitoes were UNBAREABLE. We put up the tent and watched the sunset from in there. In the middle of the night, we started to hear some [View Full Entry]

Saskatchewan has the most pathetic province sign of the whole bunch! Maybe we missed it... but thats all we saw
The drive wasn’t too bad but we were both exhausted from the trail. We arrived in Regina around 9 and went to the hostel where we wanted to stay, but it was all full. So we had our first night in a half decent motel. In the morning we headed to the farmers market downtown, which we were expecting to be pretty good since we’re in farm country. However, we were pretty disappointed at the size and selection there. Go figure. We only ended up buying a big bag of spinach and a big bag of mixed field greens, which were [View Full Entry]

Field

I'm a Good-News-Firster. I am of the mind that it makes it a lot easier to take the bad if you already know the good. So to that end, I have finally received my placement for the month of July! I will be living and working at Devaaki Hospital which is based in Karaikudi, Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu (South India). It sounds like the hospital is privately funded, and it has several departments including Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Orthopaedices, and Urology, as well as general surgeries. The hospital has five doctors, twenty nurses, fifty beds, and is apparently open 24 hours (we [View Full Entry]

I've got India on the mind. I probably should have been doing my physics homework this evening, and I'm not particularly looking forward to getting up and biking to class in a number of hours. But such is life. I leave for India in 3 weeks! And so if I can figure out how to get this countdown to work, well...I'll have a countdown. [View Full Entry]
