Friday, July 1st Canada Day and home to St. Raymond After 2900 km in two weeks of travel, We returned back to Saint Raymond right after lunch on Canada Day. We had to be back in Montreal by the next afternoon, so we had a very busy afternoon and evening of packing up all the stuff that is to go back to Robert’s place. We had borrowed several large pieces of furniture that had been his dad’s stuff and was being stored in their airplane hangar. We had rented a large cube van to bring it to S. Raymond, so when we assembled it all on the driveway it didn’t look like our little trailer would handle it all. Amazingly, Claude managed to fit it all in. The first step of going home has started. Hiking with a million of your favorite bug friends..... For our last weekend in Saint Raymond, we decided we should go visit Vallee Bras du Nord. It is a recreation area near Saint Raymond that is very popular and we hadn't had a chance to visit yet. There was supposed to be a very nice waterfall to hike to. It was a 3 km hike each way. It was a nice temperature day for hiking. Sunny but not too hot. Unfortunately there were millions and millions of bugs. Mostly mosquitos, but also a good share of black flies. Poor Paul and Marc were so covered in bites by the end of the day that I got them an Aveeno Oatmeal bath to soak in that night, and covered them with calamine lotion. Other than the bugs, ... read more

We had been excitedly awaiting the visit for Easter by Karen, Laurel and boys. They were to fly in Wednesday night and fly out Tuesday after Easter. Unfortunately we had a huge spring snow storm in the Quebec City area on Wednesday and they got stuck in Toronto overnight. Our boys were very disappointed but at least they were put up in an nice hotel by Westjet and brought in on a special flight Thursday morning. Poor Eric ended up sick that evening in Toronto so probably best he didn't have to fly again that evening. The storm dropped almost a foot and half of snow on us, so it certainly wasn't very spring like when they arrived. As the weekend progressed we got quite a bit of rain on Saturday and warm on the other ... read more

Spring is starting to emerge here. Two weeks ago it was warm and the maple sap started to flow. Last week it turned a bit cold again later in the week and they have stopped flowing briefly, but the Cabanes à sucre (Sugar Shacks) are now open and since we didn't have much on this weekend we decided we should check one out. We discovered that at the last minute it can be tough to find one that has space, but we did get a spot at the Érablière (maple farm) between here and Pont Rouge called La Bonne Fourchette (the Good Fork). They didn't have the kids activities and demos of the maple production that the busier ones have, but they did have pretty good food and lots of it, so it was a good ... read more

Wow the first day of spring actually felt like it here. In talking to Karen back home I guess it was another winter snow storm there. P had his last day of snow board lessons this morning. We had been really worried that he wouldn't get in the lessons yesterday and today as we had downpouring rain all night on Thursday and on friday the hill looked completely saturated. But they worked the hill and it got below zero friday and saturday nights so the hill was actually in pretty good spring skiing conditions. He has really done well with the lessons and was proud of himself today as he was able to turn back and forth on the last part of the run down the hill. If by chance the hill is still open next ... read more

Spring Break has gone so fast. Since we didn't get back from camping till Tuesday, it has been a short week. P had his second and third snowboarding lessons on Tuesday and Wednesday. Before going he had been complaining that in the first class he didn't get to slide on his own and he had to walk up the hill, and in true P fashion he would "never get to go faster or go down the bigger hill!". Well in these lessons they had him using the chair lift and coming all the way down the big hill. When he came back from the Tuesday lesson he had been freaked out by the chair lift (they had to stop it to get him off), and his instructor made him do "way too much sliding!" Just no ... read more

Ice Fishing at Ste. Anne de la Perade We have just finished the most amazing day. It was our coldest day yet this winter (-22C) all day, but it was beautifully sunny and we headed off for a day of ice fishing at Ste-Anne-de-la-Perade (why do Quebec towns have such huge names??). We arrived at about 11 am. It is supposed to be one of the largest ice fishing areas in the world and I believe it. Claude said he even remembers hearing about it as a kid, but never got to come. The brochure said that there are over 600 rental cabins on the river accomodating up to 4000 people each day and each night! The fish that you fish for is called Poulamon or "petits poissons des chenaux" or Tommycod. We booked a little ... read more

Back Skating on Lac Sept-Iles. We got about 4" of snow last night. yeah! Today was a bright sunny warm day so after lunch while P was at school and Claude was at work I decided that I would go skating again. Wasn't sure if the path around the lake would be plowed, but as I got there, there was a whole group of high school students there with phys. Ed. (or so I assume) and there were a few cottagers starting to plow and snow blow the trail. It was a perfect day for skating. I skated over 2.5 km in one direction before I ran out of plowed trail (the kids were skating without the plow being done, but pushing the chariot through the snow was almost impossible), so I turned around. Headed back ... read more

I determined this weekend that Quebeckers (not sure how to spell that!) do winter better than anyone else I know. I think it is because they normally get so much snow but at the same time have relatively mild winter temperatures (as opposed to back home in Alberta). It has typically been about -5 to -10 degrees C this winter, so great weather for being outside. Unfortunately after a good start of snow in late November, we have had basically none since mid December. Ironic that the winter we are away and wishing for snow Edmonton has the most snow it has seen since 1985! Anyways, with no snow we went looking for other winter activities. In the local paper this week they showed two places nearby with networks of skating trails. We decided to check ... read more

Chute de la Marmite. Still have no new snow so skiing or snowshoeing wasn't an option today so we decided to head up to Rivierre à Pierre to see if the waterfall had neat ice around it. Was late in the afternoon so my pics don't have great lighting but it was kind of neat. The river is very high and fast flowing this year so probably the ice formations would be better if the water level had dropped. The Waterfall itself is called Chute de la Marmite. It is not a large waterfall but both times we visited it the water level was high so it had a pretty good roar to it. There is a nice walking path across the falls, down one shore, across another small bridge and back up the other side. ... read more
