October 24, Tuesday Today was a lots of walking and exploring day – chilly, like 50, but sunny for much of the day. NO RAIN, that’s really all that matters. We enjoyed a lie in – the bed is very comfortable! Till about 7:30 ish, and were off on a 4.5 mile walk. Both coats, hat and gloves were needed to start with, much less to end! It was probably a mile too long, but at least there was only about 450’ change in elevation. It mostly followed the river, which was nice. LOTS of mountain bike trails off to the sides, but we sedately followed the biking, walking, cross country trail. When it’s snowing, this entire place must be hopping indeed. There’s much more to do than ski, obviously. Only a few chickadees and a ... read more

We were away from our lovely spacious Montreal flat by 8:15, fortunately heading away from the main flow of traffic. Within 30 mins we were out of the city and into the calmer countryside. As we drove northwest towards the national park, we realized that we were indeed late for the leaves, but the tamaracks were still brilliant. Kent Ohio has some of these artic wonders – deciduous but with needles. A local told us that the recent rains and winds made everything fall a bit early. Once at the park we dutifully paid our entrance, even though no one was there. The roads were sometimes paved, sometimes not, but were a lot better than the state parks in upper Michigan where we go looking for petosky stones. We were soon rewarded by seeing a Rough ... read more

Readers, it has been a while. Not that the five people who used to read this blog regularly are surprised. You all know me in real life, so you know I've been spending these past few years pretending to be an adult-type person with a career. It's been hard. It's been fun. Sometimes it's been both. But that's not why you're here. You're here because I finally left the country again for the first time since finishing my degree. Memorial Day weekend, my girlfriend Dani and I drove to Montreal to visit a friend of hers and explore the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec. So here I am. And here you are. (I hope.) Note: this entry does not have as many pictures as my previous entries. The pictures I do have were taken with an iPhone. ... read more

Geo: 46.1183, -74.6017Mont Tremblant is a purpose built ski resort just over one and a half hours drive north of Montreal. The whole resort was built from scratch and as my friend Paul would say "if Disney had to create a ski resort this would be it". The architecture is colourful and pretty but uniform throughout the village. There is a little gondola which takes you from the low village to the high village though it is a short walk anyway between the two. The place is full of shops, bars and restaurants and it is all pedestrianised. There is a climbing wall and little sled run for the kids and loads of golf courses to occupy people out of the ski season. We were booked into the Marriott residence in a two bed roomed apartment ... read more

Jacob and I left Ottawa again for Quebec. We were headed for Mont Tremblant, another provincial park. Many of Gary and Louise's friends suggested this part to us. It is worth the visit, although getting there is a bit of a trick. The signage becomes confused right around the village of Mont Tremblant and I turned in cirlcles for awhile just to locate the right road that will lead you up into the mountains and into the park. Once there, the camping sites at the main lake are private, large and with lots of trees to keep you shaded from the hot days and with plenty of options for tying up your tarps for the rain that might come. Jake and I set up our home and snuggled in for the night. (one marvelous thing about ... read more

Jour 3, on restait au camp toute ... read more

For our mini-honeymoon, we headed up to Mont Tremblant. We took off on the Monday, driving our slow ride in our dodgy rental car (which had unbalanced winter tires, one of which almost threadbare, causing the steering wheel to shake uncontrollably over 95kmph!) up to Mont Tremblant. It was a very scenic and pretty drive, and we arrived in time for beautiful colours reflecting off the lake. We checked into our one-bedroom suite at the Marriott and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening finally relaxing after one really long, stressful but amazingly wonderful week. Just enjoying the moment. And after dinner we came back to discover the fireplace lighted with extra logs. The next day we set off to explore and enjoy the sunshine. Feeling adventurous, we picked the 6.5km trail and headed up ... read more

That was actually in 2003, on a fishing trip in a place 2 hours North of the city of LaTuque. Fishing was good. We caught some pikes and walleyes during the week, which we cooked as soon as we caught them. Delicious! I was there with my wife and a family of friends. One day, i left early to go fishing on the lake, while my friends were staying to relax a bit. At some point, in the cabin, they saw a bear paw through the damaged window screen, trying to grab some apples! They did some noise to chase it away. They went on the lake then, to tell me the story. When i heard the story, i immediately stopped fishing, to go back to the cabin, in the case the bear would be still ... read more

What better than to spent a weekend in Mont-Tremblant at a 5 star resort with Aileen! Mont-Tremblant is about 1h30 minutes drive away from Montreal. They call it the ski resort paradise. After two wrong turns because of Aileen’s wonderful navigation... (It’s ok, I still love you girl) we arrive at the Westin Resort & Spa. What a beautiful hotel, very intimate, it is right at the heart of the village, clubs and restaurants. Since ski season hasn’t started yet, it was fairly quiet. I love it, because I don’t like big crowds and I find the services to be better. After checking in, we headed to our suite. Wow...what can I say? Large room with a fireplace, I wasn’t too impressed, because the fire was very small and we barely got any heat out of ... read more
