After leaving Russell, we traveled even farther east. We drove and drove and drove until we reached the gorgeous city of Winnipeg. We decided to drive through the city, rather than taking the boring by-pass that was littered with semis and other large vehicles. The first major place we passed was the Assiniboine Down racetrack, where Dad’s brother Alvin used to race his horses. We continued down the city’s streets cruising deeper into Winnipeg’s downtown region. We passed the Fort Garry Hotel, a marvelous high-class hotel that has been operating for over 100 years, then we passed the Manitoba legislature covered in its many sculptures including 2 giant sphinxes on the roof. As we were leaving the city we drove over the full Red River and continued on Highway 1 until we noticed the Royal Canadian Mint building, where we stopped to take pictures, but unfortunately were too late to take the guided tour. After exploring the premises we continued towards Eastern Canada. We reached a camping resort that was booked up until 2012/13 where the “regulars” glare at you. So much for “friendly” Manitoba. 😊We continued on and finally we stopped in a little turn-off just passed the Ontario boarder which
just happened to be the tinsy-tiny old highway. This is where we spent the night.
The next morning we woke up to find that our little discrete campground was actually a major hiking trail. Dad made a coffee and decide to go make some friends while Mom, Shae and myself cleaned up. Shaley and I even hid when people walked by. We left our newest campsite and took off towards Kanora and the giant Lake of the Woods. After trying to find an information booth we noticed how beautiful the town was and decided to park and walk around a bit. The city was littered with hundreds of old style stores and buildings. We shopped and eventually decided to go for lunch at a Greek restaurant called the Plaza. Our very attractive waiter served us our lunch and told us a few places we should stop at while visiting. After lunch we went to the Candy Nook and bout ice cream, old-style soda, crazy flavored jelly beans, and mojos. Then we explored the old hardware and jewelery stores. If you know my dad at all, you’d know how he can start a conversation with almost everyone, so you’d know
that he started up a pretty interesting conversation with the Newfie woman and found some places to see in Newfoundland. After our 4 hour en devour in Kanora ended we set off on the road again towards Thunderbay. Along the way Dad noticed an absolutely gorgeous lake (among many) and we pulled off for another hour to explore. We walked up a small trail and found a patch of wild blueberries so we picked and ate some, then we build our own inuikshuk and continued back to the truck. After that adventure we went back to the truck and continued driving until we found a small dirt road about an hour and a bit outside of Thunderbay and stopped for the night.
