I know you can’t see me right now but I am totally doing The Birthday Dance ! Today is my 39th birthday and I just know it’s going to be a wonderful day. After all, it is my last one before the big 40 ! I got to wake up on beautiful Manitoulin Island this morning and it is a glorious day. The sun is shining through the windows so bright I have to wear my sunglasses inside the motor home. My sweet, loving and adorable husband brought me breakfast in bed and even though it was a fresh bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios it was still special to me. My Momma always says “It’s the thought that counts !”. It was the best bowl of cereal I’ve ever had and I wouldn’t exchange it for anything else in the world. Not only did that sneaky little rascal make me breakfast he somehow managed to finagle a birthday card in too. I’m not sure when or where he bought it but it is the sweetest most beautiful card I’ve even received. It’s one of those mushy gushy ones that we women love to get every now and then just so we
know how special we are to them. I also had another birthday card that some other sneaky little person I know left for me hidden away in my sock drawer. Thank you Lynn for my sweet card and for thinking of me on my birthday and thanks again for the amazing whale watching adventure. I washed up the few dishes while Tim dumped the water and then we headed out to explore more of the island. The book had mentioned a water fall on the island so we went in search of it. We came upon a cute little Indian gift shop with a life sized tee pee outside so we stopped by to check it out. Of course I had to go play in the tee pee, after all the little door was just my size. There was a museum inside too so we went in and learned a little more about the island and its history. Manitoulin is the largest freshwater island in the world and at only 100 miles long it almost seems like more water than land. The island contains almost 100 lakes of its own with the largest lake being 30 miles long. Some of
the lakes even have small islands themselves. We chose to explore some of the more quiet back roads which lead us through some beautiful scenery. There were fields of fresh flowers lining the dirt roads and beautiful farm houses with huge bales of hay for the animals. Speaking of animals, we actually pulled off on the side of the road and got out to play with some cows and even a few horses. All the while we were driving we continued to follow the road signs that led us straight to Bridal Veil Falls & River. We could hear the waterfall as we were getting out of the motor home and it sounded so calm and peaceful. Tim took my hand and we walked down the metal staircase until we reached the river. We took our sandals off and put our feet in the water. I must say it was FREEZING and the rocks were slippery but he held me tight so that I wouldn’t fall. You know it is my birthday so he had to be extra special nice and sweet and all that stuff today ! I couldn’t wait any longer so we made our way over to
the waterfall where we continued to splash around together and have lots of fun. Tim couldn’t wait any longer either so he made his way over and all the way behind the waterfall. After my little spill in The Bay of Fundy I really wasn’t feeling all that adventurous so I stayed behind and took some pictures. Plus, my knee was finally healing and I didn’t want to mess that all up. We spent quite a bit of time playing in the river and waterfall but now it was time to go. Our goal was to make it into Michigan by nightfall so we made our way back up the staircase and on over to the RV. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the island but we were back at the swing bridge and it was time to say goodbye. We crossed back over Lake Huron and made our way towards the states. After a lot of driving and a lot of talking, about two and half hours later we ended up in a place called Sault Ste. Marie. This town is on the Canada / USA border and it is home to the Soo Locks which is the busiest
waterway in the world. There is a twenty-one foot elevation difference between Lake Superior and Lake Huron so back in the 1800’s the first locks were built to tame the rapids and allow ships to slowly rise or lower and pass through. The freight transported through the locks exceeds that of the Panama and Suez canals combined. It was a pretty neat thing to see and we could actually watch it from the bridge while we were sitting in line to cross the border. Speaking of crossing the border, after we sat in line for about thirty minutes it was finally our turn. The gentleman asked Tim a few questions, checked our passports and we thought we were on our way but nooooooo, then he asked Tim to unlock the door because he was coming in !! He just came on in and made himself at home. He asked a million questions all the while he was opening and closing every little door and drawer. He even opened the refrigerator, the washing machine and the toilet lids ! I must say I was impressed with America’s security process because Canada didn’t do any of this stuff they just let us
right on in. You know I wanted to grab my camera and take some pictures but Tim gave me that look so I had to refrain. He just wanted to get this over with and get back on the road and eventually we did. YAY ! We were officially back in the good ole U S of A and we couldn’t be happier. Immediately we could tell the difference in the roads and after 12 days in Canada it just felt good being back home. We drove on for a little while until Tim’s internal radar detector starting going off again. Yes, you guessed it, he had sniffed out another casino and low and behold this one had an RV park right across the street !! Well he couldn’t use the RV park as an excuse because we had just left one this morning and we were good to go for at least two more days so he had to come up with something else. You know he gave me that sad little face and even though it was MY birthday, I gave in and off to the casino parking lot we went. It was still somewhat early so I
decided to take a birthday nap while Tim caught up with his emails and Nascar picks and all that boy stuff he does. Somewhere around nine o’clock we got ready and made our way inside Bay Mills Resort and Casino to see if we could make a little withdrawal. We won a little here and lost a little there and by three in the morning we were just about even so we walked across the parking lot in the rain and got ready for bed. Good grief, looks like our lullaby tonight will be the good old drip, drip, drip tune. We set up the bucket and towel again and then hit the sack. I have to say that even though I missed being with my friends and family today, I had a wonderful birthday and it’s all thanks to my wonderful husband. Thank you Tim, I LOVE YOU TO THE SKY AND BACK ! 206
P.S. Thank you to every one who sent text messages, e-mails, cards and called me today !! I love each and every one of you and can't wait to see you soon !
