Good mornin’ America how are you ? (in my singing voice) ! Seriously, I can’t help it, I’m just a morning person. Yesterday it was dancing and today it’s singing. I had a great birthday yesterday but it’s not over yet. I plan on having an even better day after my birthday day. You know I might even have a birthday week this year ! We woke up in the parking lot at the Bay Mills Casino and Resort in Michigan today and thank goodness the rain was gone. We parked right by the lake so our view this morning was just incredible. The little ducks were waddling around looking for food and the waves were crashing into the rocks right by our window. There were a few things in the book that we had to get to today so we got up and hit the ground running. Tim got everything set up while I made the bed and then we were off. Our plan for the day was to drive up Lake Superior’s shipwreck coast until we reached Whitefish Point, which is in the book. As we were driving the shoreline we saw lots of deer and all types of
birds throughout the fields and sand. We drove through parts of the Hiawatha National Forest which had a very wild yet serene beauty about it. Eventually we came upon the Point Iroquois Light Station which is located on the shore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We went inside and toured the museum and then, for some reason unknown to me, we thought it would be a great idea to climb the 72 winding steps and go to the top of the light house itself. I didn’t realize until it was too late that the lady meant it was 72 steps up and 72 more steps down !! I assumed she meant 72 all together but oh well, I did it and I survived ! We have seen so many light houses on this trip but we had not had the opportunity to actually go to the top of one so I’m really glad we did it. The view of the beaches, the forest and Lake Superior were absolutely amazing and breathtaking. Once we made it back down to level ground, we signed the guest book, made a little donation and then made our way on down the road. We
continued on the shipwreck coast for a little while until we decided to stop in a small town called Paradise and have some lunch. The Little Falls Inn Restaurant was the perfect place for a quiet and delicious lunch together. Tim had the mushroom cheeseburger while I opted for the salad bar (I am trying to be good !) and both were great. As soon as we were finished we made our way back to the RV and then Tim began to drive us further up the coastline. A good while later, after enjoying the scenic drive, we finally arrived at Whitefish Point, Michigan. Here they had the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the Whitefish Bird Observatory, a gift shop, a light house tour and the Lake Superior Trail you could walk that would take you down to the beach and the lake itself. We purchased our tickets for the museum and took the grand tour. I must say it was very interesting even if shipwrecks and that kind of stuff are not something you like. I learned all about the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck and we even got to see the actual bell that was recovered from the bottom of the
lake. We also learned that Lake Superior is not only the largest of the great lakes but it is by far the fiercest. There are hundreds of shipwrecks that litter the deep dark bottom of the Superior because of the storms that prevail over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Once we were finished with the museum we made our way over to the lighthouse where we were able to tour the living quarters of the light keeper’s and their families. Thank goodness they didn’t allow any one to go up into the tower itself because I just don’t know if I could handle it twice in one day ! We walked through the bedrooms, the kitchen, the office and the living room of the lighthouse. It was very quaint and had a real homey feeling to it. Next, we continued on outside where we made our way to The Great Waters Lake Superior Trail. This sandy trail would lead us to a wooden deck that overlooked a private beach and Lake Superior. I was dying to get my feet in the Superior so I made a run for it. Once my feet hit that frigid water it only took me
a few minutes to pose for a picture and then I was quickly back onto the warm sand. I can now say that my feet have been in four out of the five great lakes so Lake Michigan you better watch out cause here I come ! Tim and I hung out here on the beach for a little while and then it was time to go. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was in the book and it was our next and final stop for the day. We made our way over to Munising to check it out but unfortunately the interpretive center had just closed so we were not able to get much information. Tim read what he could on the bulletin board out front and while he was reading he discovered a nearby waterfall. We decided we wanted to do the hike so we made our way to the beginning of the trail and headed off into the woods in search of falling water. I felt like little red riding hood, over the hills and through the woods, and all that stuff but luckily we didn’t run into the big bad wolf. Eventually we made it to the
waterfall and let me just say that I was very disappointed. All that walking and hiking and getting ate up by bugs for this !! I guess it is technically a waterfall because water is falling but it was a pitiful little waterfall if I ever saw one. Oh well, we needed the exercise anyway as well as the fresh air and I know Tim needed a break from driving so it all worked out okay. It was time to get back on the road and see how far we could make it tonight. As Tim was driving, I spotted a sign on the highway that said “Welcome to Christmas”. It was so cute, we were in a little town called Christmas, Michigan and we were driving down Candy Cane Lane. All the stores and houses were decorated with Christmas stuff and it was just so festive looking. There was another sign that said “Everyday is Christmas in Christmas”. I was thinking about how neat it would be to live there as a little kid. We drove through Christmas and then made our way on over to a Wal-Mart in Marquette, Michigan. On the way over to Marquette, we saw
a bald eagle flying through the air right in front of us. I snapped a quick picture just before he landed in a treetop nearby and then we made our way over to the tree and took a few more pictures. Tim was really tired from all the driving so we watched a little television and then went on to bed kind of early. Tomorrow is mostly going to be a driving day so we don’t really have that much planned. We’ll just have to see where the road leads us, so until then, sleep tight !
