Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Hi Folks, I'm in Saul St. Marie Ontario. I actually had 2 days in a row with no rain, of course it's pouring as I type this!!! Wind has been kicking in but no serious climbing yet, the terrain is mostly flat to rolling hills. The ride along the north channel of Lake Huron has been beautiful and everyone keeps telling me the North Shore of Lake Superior is even better. I've got 3200 Km's in now, so I stopped at a bike shop here, Velorution, to get my pedals lubed and tighten the rear cog set, (I noticed some looseness). [View Full Entry]

Back to Back Roads Sunday, 19 August 2007 Today was yet another attempt to ride a road branching off of the Trans Canada Highway. This time I took Silver & rode without problem to Echo Bay, which I’d already passed through once, on my trip yesterday. But this time I went to the left off the highway, through the town, to join up with highway 638. Unfortunately for me there is some major road construction taking place, as the government is finally creating a 4-lane highway on this stretch of the Trans Canada. So I somehow missed my turn onto 638 [View Full Entry]

To St Joseph's Island Saturday, 18 August 2007 Today was a much much better day than yesterday, both for weather & for what I was able to do. I took Blue & rode from the motel to St Joseph’s Island, some 30-40 kilometres east of Sault Ste Marie. The riding on the whole went very well, even though there was a bit of wind and a couple of good-sized hills (one was over 3 kilometres long, but the slope was gradual, so it was relatively easy). There was an interesting bridge to cross to get to the island, and soon after [View Full Entry]

Discouragement in the Soo Friday, 17 August 2007 Today was a difficult day for me. There was a road which appeared to be quite inviting on the map, something like the ones I’d tried in Wawa & Fort Frances. However, between the weather conditions, VERY windy, rainy & cold, and the type of road, not so many hills but looong ones, fairly steep too, I had to call it quits after only 10 kilometres and call for a “pick-up”. It’s as if Someone was telling me not to go, because the weather cleared up temporarily while I made the decision not [View Full Entry]

“Lost’ in Sault Ste Marie Thursday, 16 August 2007 Today we drove to the Soo. It was way too windy for little old me to try to bike it, so to keep up my pace I had to walk. After we checked in & I dropped off the laptop - the shop actually shares parking space with the motel - we drove to Kinsmen’s Park, where we’d had a nice off-leash walk with Panna on our trip out (two whole months ago!). The three of us (Bob, Panna, & myself) had a nice walk through parts of the park, although for [View Full Entry]

AT LAST - WE’RE FINALLY ON THE ROAD! Wednesday, 13 June ‘07 This is the end of the 2nd day of our trip. We’re presently in Sault Saint Marie, Ontario, having spent the first night in Sudbury. We’ve covered close to 900 km driving so far. The driving has been pretty good; after a bit of getting accustomed to the size of Casper, Bob has gotten fairly comfortable at the wheel. I’ve been able to observe the various sights (or should I say the scenery) along the way, as I’ve been playing passenger the whole time, so far. Somehow, we seem [View Full Entry]
