*big sigh* One week till I leave. I can't believe its, it's so freaky. I am finally starting to get nervous about leaving. I had a nice Thanksgiving dinner last night with my family and a couple of Aunts from Toronto. I think I'm actually still full from the dinner. Mom made me my own stuffing, which was really sweet of her. Packing......well, I've packed and repacked a couple of times to get the system down pat. A combination of compression packs and rolling clothes. I'm not happy with it yet, so I think I will at least re-pack a couple of times today if I get the chance. I'm determined to get my winter jacket in there somehow!!!!! When it comes down to it, an 80 Litre backpack is not that big!!!! Well, maybe because ... read more

I went for a while and saw several good films, but most I played volley ball. 19720804 We had “professional” groups today for the first time. These are designed to help those of us who are inexperienced to learn how to teach and also to help everyone adjust to teaching in West Africa. For instance, French teachers must be aware of all the ... read more

Diary 19720729 Our orientation for going to West Africa started officially today. There are about 120 volunteers going to Nigeria, Sierra Leone or Ghana. This part of our orientation is to make us more aware of our personal attitudes toward our own culture and all other cultures. We are all living in one residence building in the basement of which there is a library of films, articles, and books. This morning we played a game in which we were blindfolded, so we could see how it is to learn with a handicap. 19720730 It seems that much more than one day has gone by. We started a “simulation game” which supposes that our plane crashes on an unknown island in the Atlantic on the way to Africa. There are only the twelve survivors of our group ... read more
