During the night it poured on and off, the AM is windy and cool. After mass, we stopped at a Canadian favorite spot, Tim Horton’s. Like Dunkin Donuts, you see them everywhere in Canada, my what strong coffee. The wind was very strong as we made our way along the Viking Trail to Gros Morne National Park of Canada. What a magnificent natural area! The Discovery Center has a great slide show narrative. It seems the geology here marks a time when the continents of Africa and North America collided, pushing these rocks originally beneath the ocean to their present position, on land. Geologist from all over the world, come here to study rocks and fossils from the pre-Cambrian period of our earth’s history. We hiked the Lookout Trail, which leads to the summit of Partridgeberry ... read more

Our intent was to tour Corner Brook, the second largest city in Newfoundland, but this is Canada Day weekend and a holiday, so most everything is closed. We hiked up the hills out of town to James Cook’s Memorial. He was the first explorer to actually chart/map this area of North America. From on top the hills, we had a neat view of Corner Brook. Like Pittsburgh, of old, it is very hilly, but instead of the Thrtee Rivers they have the Humber Arm, and instead of the steel mills, they have a huge paper mill that is the main industry. We continue our trek of this Western section of Newfoundland to Deer Lake. It’s a small town and the little beach/park is also a RV campground. So we found a home for the night. ... read more

I finally found some pictures from the Rock. Makes me miss it even more. Summer in Newfoundland is great and I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience nature away from pollution and big cities. Plus St. John's is the oldest city in North America and is always fun to wander around. During the summer almost every community has a festival and they're all worth seeing. For those who enjoy pubs and/or clubbing there is the infamous George Street (which I sadly have no pictures of). George Street means George Street Fest' which is pretty much an open street with dozens of bars and dozens of bands for an entire week. Well worth the trip. ... read more

Only 9 more days until we take off on our South American adventure! I figured starting this blog would be an easier way to keep everyone updated on what we're doing instead of emailing it ten times or those hated mass emails which half the people delete as spam. Look for updates once we're on the road! BUENOS AIRES HERE WE COME!... read more

June 15, 2006 The first leg of our adventure started by driving to Montreal, our plan was to stay at the Holiday Inn close to the TCH (Trans-Canada Highway), some how we managed to go to the wrong Holiday Inn, got lost with all the detours and construction. Phew! We finally made it to our hotel. June 16, 2006 The next leg of our drive to NFLD took us to Magnetic Hill. Not sure if it’s an optical illusion or real, but driving backwards in neutral up hill is a very cool experience and it was only $5.00. We also had our first encounter with a Moose, luckily for us he decided at that last minute NOT to cross the road; otherwise we would probably have been road kill. We also drove through the longest (1282 ... read more

Browsing the bookshelves Updating the blog before Night on the town. I had a morning at Hava Java drinking coffee and reading the paper with Marko. The sun was shining again today but there was a cool nip in the air. I walked around some of the shops downtown again before settling into the second hand book shop near our hostel. I must have been there for a good couple of hours just browsing the stacks and stacks of books. There were so many books I wanted to purchase but kept reminding myself that books are heavy especially since I kept seeing all of these really big books (which equals dead weight = bricks = lead pipes.) But I did pick up a few paperbacks for reading while on the train. Most notably Anne of Green ... read more

Another nice day Checking out some of the shops Chillaxing day out. Yet again sucked in by the morning TV! I have discovered that the talk show hosted by Ellen Degeneres is hilarious! She's one funny lady. Plus she had on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and they went on for a bit about Ellen's missing "happy face" chip. Apparently a potato chip that has a happy face on it. Anyhoo, once I finally dragged myself away from the TV, my first mission was to head on over to the Post Office on the end of Water Street. Water Street has lots of great little shops to check out so I wandered in and out of some of these stores before being able to get my letters posted. I can't believe how many artisans there are in ... read more

Signal Hill's awesome! Watched teh mesmerizing waves Had a wicked day. The sun was shining so I took full advantage of the situation and put paying a visit up to Signal Hill at the top of the list of things to do today after grabbing a bite to eat. Out of convenience I headed across the street to Tim Horton's and had myself a chunky chicken salad sandwich, a coke and a Boston Cream donut. It was so reminiscent of my lunches with my sister when we'd head over to Save-on on our lunch break and we'd sometimes have this. Good times. I'm not sure why I just felt compelled to type that up. LOL I had a lazy morning just watching mindless TV before rolling out of bed. I probably would have gotten up earlier ... read more

Off to Newfoundland I'm not sure what to expect Pleasantly surprised! My last day in Halifax yesterday was pretty much spent wandering the streets. I checked out some of the "Lobsters in the City" that are scattered about town. They are basically 7 feet tall fibreglass lobsters that have been creatively decorated by artisans and will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for something...to be honest, I don't think I ever found out! I also stopped by the Mary E. Black Gallery which was currently displaying "In the Margins: Works by 12 woman clay artists." One from each of the Canadian provinces and territories. Hmm, I thought there were three territories?? I then worked on more of my cross stitch while watching “Superman II”. Did you know that Lex Luther was the Ruler of Australia ... read more
