We were up very early to catch a cab to the train station and arrived in plenty of time. The train ride was very smooth and did not seem to be travelling particularly fast for a ‘High Speed’ train. The cab driver in Madrid was very friendly and made quite an effort to get us as close as possible to our hotel which was on a pedestrian-only street. All of the can drivers in Madrid seemed to be exceptionally helpful. Our hotel (Best Western Hotel Carlos V) had a beautiful balcony overlooking the square which made us regret that we were only here for one night. We had a short rest then picked a nice long walking tour out of the guide book and headed out. We covered a remarkable area before noon then stopped for ... read more

Wednesday Oct 1 We had a nice breakfast this morning and took our last walk around Vejer. We found a very nice bookstore and picked up a few novels set in Southern Spain. While walking we discovered a beautiful vista that we somehow managed to miss so far. After lunch we headed out on our drive to Seville. Barb did a wonderful job of navigating getting us to within a few block of our hotel without a single missed turn. Then we had to find parking!!! Well we drove around and around, up and down narrow on-way streets, back on the motorway, off the motorway, back into the narrow streets with no parking to be found anywhere. At one point the traffic in one of the narrow streets stopped and we noticed people starting to get ... read more

This morning we had an early breakfast and started our drive to Jerez to visit the Royal Foundation for the Equestrian Arts. Our drive was uneventful until a large truck prevented us from seeing our next exit until it was too late. We continued on into the city of Cadiz hoping for the best but it wasn't long before we were lost. We stopped at a service station and asked for directions. While the attendant was explaining the way a truck driver came over and said that he was going to Jerez and that we could follow him. We followed him until we were back on the main highway and then waived a thank-you as we continued on our way. Once we arrived in Jerez we quickly learned that driving in Spain you need to rely ... read more

Another dark and gloomy day. Who says that its always sun shining in Spain. We thought we would try to make the most of it. We headed out about 10:00 and drove down the windy coast. The coast around Tarif is very popular for windsurfers and kite flying as it is known as the windiest part of Spain. Today however the wind was calm, and the rain fierce. Steve drove white knuckled most of the way. We arrived in Gibraltar with a sense of relieve and did what most people do once they cross into the UK, and walked across the airport runway into the town of Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a very quirky town with its mix of African, Spanish and British residents. Gibraltar must also be known for having the most Duty Free Shops in ... read more

Happy Anniversary! We've been married for one week! Ahhh! To be married and in Spain. There's nothing like it. We attempted to see the sleepy town of Vejer. But unlike Canada everything is closed on Sundays. We had woken up to dark skies and had hoped that they would clear. Unfortunately it didn't and during our walk around down it decided to pour rain. We went back to our room and slept for a couple of hours. After our nap we decided to try and get some lunch somewhere. However, everyone in town had the same idea so sitting on dry patios were at a premium. We found a delightful place that served a variety of dishes, such as Crepes and Curry Dishes! We found a table under the umbrella, but the umbrella had a hole ... read more

This morning we are leaving our lovely little home in Padul. It's sad to leave since we're just getting settled in and feeling very comfortable here. Our host Jeremy has made it feel more like we were visiting a friend's home than staying in a hotel. We had another great breakfast and then started our drive to Vejer de la Frontera. We had planned out what we thought would be the quickest route, taking the major highways most of the way. Somewhere along the way we missed a turn and ended up heading towards the town of Ronda. We had heard nice things about Ronda so we thought 'Why not, let's pass through Ronda.' After arriving in Ronda we had our first taste of Spanish city parking. Not having planned to come here we didn't really ... read more

A Supposed Rest Day

Today we decided that we would have an easy going day with a dive up to the “Three Villages” in the hills and then a drive over to the Gaudix “Cave” village. After talking about our plans with Jeremy over breakfast he convinced us that the Gorge was a preferable option over Guadix. Plus the Villages and the Gorge hike where in the same general direction whereas the Villages and Guadix where in opposite directions. We finished another lovely breakfast and hit the road towards Las Alpujarras. Well, if Marilyn Munroe is curvy then this road is Marilyn doing power Yoga. Non-stop switchbacks with some of the curves feeling like you must have done several 360's before finally straightening out. Barb kept oohing and awing at the views but I couldn't take my eyes off the ... read more

Today is the day that both Steve and I have been looking forward to for a long time. Hiking in the Mountains. We left the hotel at 10:00 or so, and drove for about hour into the Sierra Nevada . We passed through a town called Cumbres Verdes a cute little mountain town that looked very much like a Swiss Village. We drove to the trail head and got our bearing and starting hiking. Steve found a great hiking stick to use. We found the hiking trail to be in great condition. So wide in fact that a car could drive up the mountain. The scenery was incredible. We had to walk around one mountain in order to see our intended destination, Cerro de Travenque. We decided earlier on that we would attempt to reach the ... read more

Sept 22, 2008 Steve and I are sitting at Gate K in the Madrid Airport waiting for our flight to leave for Granada. Our 16:10 flight has been delayed until 5pm. Yikes! But at least we're in the right place. For the last hour we've been traveling between Gate M, as it states on our boarding pass to Gate K where our flight is actually departing from. Here at the MAD airport (Yes, that's Madrid's actual airport code) they don't post what gate number your departing from until about an hour before and it can take almost that time to get to your gate. This airport is so big that you need to take a train to get to the various gates, and the travel times between each gates is anywhere from 10 minutes to 29 ... read more

June 15th 2006

June 15, 2006 The first leg of our adventure started by driving to Montreal, our plan was to stay at the Holiday Inn close to the TCH (Trans-Canada Highway), some how we managed to go to the wrong Holiday Inn, got lost with all the detours and construction. Phew! We finally made it to our hotel. June 16, 2006 The next leg of our drive to NFLD took us to Magnetic Hill. Not sure if it’s an optical illusion or real, but driving backwards in neutral up hill is a very cool experience and it was only $5.00. We also had our first encounter with a Moose, luckily for us he decided at that last minute NOT to cross the road; otherwise we would probably have been road kill. We also drove through the longest (1282 ... read more
