Green PointToday we got to Green Point we stopped and got some fish and then set up camp. Dad made a really good Halibut supper. after we ate we went to bed.In the morning I took my time but we still went for a hike. Once back at camp we had lunch and did a little work. For supper we had scallops and pasta. We also met a guy from the USA who comes down on a motor bike.It was raining all day so we went in to town and did some laundry then bought more fish for supper. I wanted to go swimming but the swimming pool was closed. By the time we got back to Rocky Harbour it was late so we went to a restaurant and had a moose meat pizza which was ... read more

Up early for a pleasant breakfast at the Harbourfront B&B. Another guest from Toronto had just arrived from Newfoundland and took the time to write down a list of suggestions for us. We drove onto the ferry at 9:45 AM and then found our seats. We paid extra to get into the nicer reserved section for the six hour cruise from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. To get into this section with the cushy seats you need a key card. We entered and discovered there were only two other couples in the entire area, one from Colorado Springs and the other from Hamilton, which is near Toronto. We six had our own entertainer, a great singer/guitar player. We spent the entire trip visiting and dining with the Toronto couple, exchanged emails and ... read more

The snow has definitely stopped us in our tracks. We spent the day (and will be here tonight) in Corner Brook and knew this morning that we be goin' nowhere b'y as they say here. If only we had a nicer B & B to relax in. We are a little miffed at this place, the Bell's Inn. Sadly it has delivered on NOTHING promised in its website. When we called to book in, we weren't advised that the floors were being renovated on the main floor. The tablesaws were in full swing, there was nowhere to sit, no dining room and no kitchen facilities in which to make a much needed cup of hot toddy. Oh, and no hot water to take a much needed shower when we first got there. Ordinarily, had we been ... read more

So close but still so far away. Spring snow anyone? Actually it feels more like winter. Today's ride was extremely cold. What started out as a dry, crisp clear cool morning rapidly turned into a freezing cold, wet winter's day with temperatures on the bike guage dipping down to 2 degrees. Add wind chill at 100 km/h and you can see why we were frozen, numb and fed up two hours into the ride. Temperatures due to whipping winds were down to minus 4. We are so disappointed that the weather has dictated our destiny today. It is disheartening that we have ridden over 7,000 kms to get here but simply cannot complete the last 700 kms to see our family and be part of little Addi's christening in Bonavista on Sunday. To be this close ... read more

We were due to sail to Port aux Basques NFL from North Sydney NS last Wed. However due to Hurricane Leslie we were delayed until Thurs morning. The crossing takes 7 to 8 hours depending on the weather. We had a calm ocean for the crossing and arrived about 6:30 pm. We travelled to Corner Brook that evening arriving about 9pm. I should mention that we left the 5th wheel at a campground in Cape Breton as it was way to expensive to bring it across on the ferry. The next morning we travelled to Gros Morne National Park the fjords are beautiful. NFL has a landscape that is truly diverse. From Port aux Basques where there is tree covered hills to Saint John's where there are barren rocks and colourful homes. In between there is ... read more

When we arrived back in Newfoundland the weather took a dramatic turn toward fall. There were even frost warnings for the inland areas. We settled in at the Port au Choix Lion’s Club campground. We had heard that it was a great location with a wonderful view of the water. You can see from our photos that we did indeed have a great view of the water….Ignornchoix Bay to be exact. We drove around the town a little bit and then settled in for the night. Overnight we had lots of rain and wind and temps that dropped down into the 40’s. We discovered that the site we had parked in probably collected the most water, so taking Lizzie out became an added challenge. The winds were fierce so she had the added difficulty of standing ... read more

June 28 St. Anthony to Corner Brook How can it be the last day? We're all sad that this great trip is ending. The day starts with seeing 15 moose in the first hour out of St. Anthony - did our guide somehow stage this finale? We even watched a cow with her calf and saw a fairly big bull plus lots of yearlings. We stopped at Port aux Choix, a national historic site whose web site explains its importance. "For over 5500 years, this small peninsula on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula has been the crossroads of various native North American and European cultures. The area's rich marine resources,. . . wild game and abundant berries, have drawn these people to the shores of Port au Choix. The people who occupied this site connect the area ... read more

A few days of Toronto air was enough for me, so it was time for some fresh air in the most easterly part of Canada, Newfoundland which is located off the mainland on it's own little island. Newfoundland is gorgeous in the fall, better than anywhere else I've been like say the lame Alberta fall which is basically pine and stick trees! So my first stop was St. John's which is pretty much the most easterly part of Canada you can go. Caught up with an old friend from Jasper, went to the famous George Street which has the most bars per capita than anywhere else in North America. Can't say I remember much but I did manage to get 'screeched in'. This procedure involves having a shot of Newfoundland Rum, reciting an irish like ... read more
