Geo: 46.0884, -64.7783Hopewell Rocks in New BrunswickWhat a fun day at Fundy! This morning we visited Hopewell Rocks. On our way, Allison pointed out that the Petitcodiac River behind our hotel ebbs and flows with the tides of the Bay of Fundy. The water level was very high; the Bay of Fundy tide was obviously in. When we returned late afternoon, the river was almost empty. The tide was out. Thus the phenomenon of the local tides.Check out this video – a time lapse of the tidal shifts at Hopewell Rocks, Bay of Fundy.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnDJ6_XpGfoThe Hopewell Rocks, also called the Flowerpot Rocks, are formations caused by tidal erosion. They stand 40-70' tall. They are located on the shores of the Bay of Fundy. Due to the extreme tidal range of the Bay of Fundy, the base of the formations ... read more

Geo: 46.0884, -64.7783Day 3Halifax: City Tour, Harbor Boat Ride, Wharf LunchAnother gorgeous day. How blessed we are. This morning was devoted to a city tour of Halifax. First up was Fairview Lawn Cemetery where 150 victims of the Titanic are buried. There are three types of headstones: 1. Identified graves of unclaimed victims2. Unidentified graves3. Monuments paid for by family members of lost loved onesBecause the ship went down just off the coast of Newfoundland, four rescue and recovery ships from the Atlantic Provinces were hired to search for the dead. Of 328 bodies found, some were buried at sea. Others were brought to Halifax, but only 40 bodies were actually claimed by family members. Of the remaining unidentified or unclaimed bodies, 121 were buried in a special plot at Fairview. Two of the most decorated plots ... read more

Geo: 45.2734, -66.0641Day 7 – The Road Less Traveled Saint John, New Brunswick Farewell to Maine. Twice. We checked out of the Harborside Hotel early. I asked if there were coffee in the lobby and they told me there was a coffee bar in the coffee shop. I helped myself and was told I owed $3. Yikes. For the price per room, certainly a go-cup of coffee could be complimentary. We drove north to US1, stopping at a grocery store near Bar Harbor for breakfast snacks. There I found that they sold Tab! Oh, joy! Who needs coffee when there is Tab to be had??On our agenda this morning was a drive along Schoodic Scenic Byway (ME-186) to Schoodic Point and its crashing waves. This is another section of Acadia NP. The park has parcels here and there, ... read more

What a day in Moncton! We are going to have to come back for another day before heading back home. We started off uploading the pictures to our blog then went off to the Post Office. We stopped by the Community Living here in Moncton. We met Connie the Executive Director at the Community Living here in Moncton. After talking to her it was amazing how many people and families she serves (about 400) in her area with only two other staff. After talking to her and her co-worker she found out that we were sleeping in the car and invited us for supper and to stay the night. We then went to Magnetic Hill and experienced this natural optical illusion. It was very odd/cool going down a hill putting it in neutral then your car ... read more

This morning we drove to Magnetic Hill, a gravity hill which is a type of optical illusion created by rising and descending terrain. Stories about this place have been around since the early 1800s. In the 30s, it was noticed that at one point near the base of a hill, motorists had to accelerate to prevent their car from rolling back uphill. We drove our car to the bottom of the hill to try it out. Tim put the car in neutral, took his foot off the brake, and sure enough, we started rolling back uphill. What?! Our brains were so confused. When we reached the crest of the hill, the car stopped. We tried it again with the same results. All we could do was scratch our heads. Both of us were finding that we ... read more

On my final day at Campobello Island, I saw two very unique rock formations - "the Friar" and Gibraltar Rocks. Both are accessable via a trail, the first at Roosevelt Campobello International Park. To see the "Friar", one must go at low tide and do some scrambling over algae and or seaweed covered rocks. I accessed the rocky beach and slowly and cautiously approached "the Friar". During my hike I met two "winklers" picking up periwinkles (or winkles as they call them) which are often attached to the seaweed. They are sold at $1 a pound (to a local retailer) and sent to France and Japan where they are considered quite the delicacy. Gibraltar Rocks can be viewed along Gibraltar Rocks trail at Herring Cove Provincial Park. The trail is about 4 km long through a ... read more

Another busy day hiking. In total, did 4 trails within the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. I started with the 1 km Eagle Hill Bog. A wooden pathway allows easy access to the bog. This was followed by some beachcombing at Herring Cove Beach where I added two more walking sticks to my collection. Following more beachcombing at Raccoon Beach ( 2 more!), I started a 6 mile loop of 3 trails, leaving and returning to Raccoon Beach. On one of the trails was the Sunsweep sculpture, near Liberty Point; commemorating three national parks with boundaries in both Canada and the US. In all, the hike took around 4 hours, including some more beachcombing at Lower Duck Pond. The evening was spent at Mulholland Point Lighthouse, overlooking Lubec in the state of Maine. This is the oldest ... read more

Spending 3 days on Campobello Island to hike the trails and see the sights. Although you can drive to Campobello Island via a bridge at Lubec Maine, living in New Brunswick, I travelled by small ferry (free) from Letete NB to Deer Island. Another ferry takes you from Deer Island to Campobello Island - a short 20 minute trip. Once on the island I visited the information centre of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. Armed with my trail guide off I went. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the rock formation - Friars Head, but unbeknownst to me at the time, one had to do the trail at low tide to see the rock. Will return tomorrow! One of the must do activities on Campobello Island is to visit Head Harbour Lighthouse (also known ... read more

I have a nice perk at work, July and August, we only need to work half day on Fridays - work permitting, of course. So, I woke up early and worked from 7 - 11am. By 11:15, I had all my stuff in the car and I was on the road. I drove about 15 miles, when I realized that I forgot the most important thing for this trip -- my passport. Thank God, it was only after 15 miles. The rest of the drive from New York was uneventful. My route took me through the major interstates from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. As I entered Maine, my first time in this state, I took a break and went to the visitor's center. The man at the help desk told me to ... read more
