I am at my final type of accommodation on this trip - ye olde Bed and Breakfast! I didn't remember that I had booked such a place, but I'm glad that I did. It is also the most expensive place I booked in Canada. But so far, this makes for my 6th type of overnight - at a hostel, with friends, using airbnb, a straight-up hotel, a dorm, and now a B&B. If we wanted to split hairs, I could even say that my 'hotel' in Saint John was actually a 'motel,' but it's basically the same thing from my perspective. Now, I didn't start the day here. I woke up still in Halifax, NS, in my dorm. I woke up earlier than I had expected, mainly thanks to the sunrise. But I had plans to ... read more

Geo: 47.3737, -68.3251Today was moving day. We moved from PEI west making our way toward Huntsville, Ontario where we will visit for a few days with friends at their lake cottage. (It's really a 4 bedroom house, but they call it a cottage.) So, we left Charlottetown at 8:20 AM and 68 degrees. Before leaving the area, we decided to check out Rocky Point, which is a peninsula on the other side of Charlottetown Harbour. When we stopped to take photos, several cows made it clear that they wanted our attention, so we spent a little time visiting with them. Beamer thought they were interesting until he decided that barking was a more appropriate response to the fact that they were approaching our car. We then drove along the Gulf of St. Laurence on our way ... read more

With a long drive ahead of us to get to Amherst Shore provincial park in Nova Scotia, we got up early and hit the local Timmy’s before heading out. After taking an incredible amount of time to steep tea we finally head out of there and immediately discover the Macdonald’s that we should have went to instead. While sneaking around the back of the building and hurriedly reading a sign that said Entrée Interdit, I almost ran into a truck coming OUT of the drivethru. Backing up quickly into an open parking space, I was cursing and wondering why the word Entrée would be on an exit. We walked in to get our food and left perplexed. Later Vicki looked it up and it means Entrance Prohibited. For F$#$^& sakes. After that it was drive, drive, ... read more

As an aside, I absolutely HATE the fact that this blog forces me to select a continent, country, region, and city and then doesn't give me the choice of Clair, NB, which is where I've been for the last 5-6 days. The best I could do was Edmundston, NB. Sigh! We've had the extraordinary good luck to be here for the absolute best of the fall colors. We came east at this time of year in part to see this again, and we have certainly not been disappointed. We're hoping that as we move westward, we'll catch more of the peak, given that the season is probably earlier here than in Quebec and Ontario. A bit of comic relief from all this beauty are the cluster flies that have been plaguing us at the camp for ... read more

Sunday evening we made pizzas in Peter and Marielle’s outdoor pizza oven. So yummy! And filling. I ate only one and a half pieces but felt like I’d eaten a whole pizza. It’s been very dry here this year and the river is way down. We’ve had light rain much of the time since we arrived and Sunday night it poured for many hours, but the river is still down; I’m sure it will take a great deal more than this for it to recover. We’ve seen lots of wild life. There’s a blue heron we see regularly. We saw either beaver or muskrat this morning (too far away to be sure). And this morning there was a female moose on the island below the cabin! Unfortunately I didn’t get to my camera in time to ... read more

Four words: Most. Relaxing. Day. Yet. This morning started out strangely. There was nowhere to eat near the motel except at the motel restaurant, and that didn't open until 8. Not wanting to wait, we ate peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwiches, as well as pastrami and tomato sandwiches in our room. Strange combination, but its what we had. We still planned to stop on the road for something with eggs (we love eggs to start our day) about an hour in. We knew there was a Tim Horton's coming up, and though we don't like it nearly as much as McDonald's (especially Therese), it seemed like a good plan. Speaking of good plans, a nice guy at the motel last night commented that he saw us on our way, and thought we were really good, ... read more

This was our last real day of our holiday. We left Edmundston early in the morning to meet up with Claude’s Uncle Jacques at his cabin near Edmundston. They live in Levis, so not very far from us in St. Raymond, but we hadn’t managed to link up yet. Luckily for us, he was out at his cabin this week, so we got to have breakfast with him there. He enjoyed showing the boys his tree house for kids and his tarzan rope. Both boys managed to wipe out pretty good on the rope swing. Edmunston is almost on the Quebec border (and the Maine border too) so we were very quickly into Quebec. Shortly into Quebec, we stopped in St. Eusebe to have lunch with Claude’s Aunt Lulu and Uncle Roger. The boys had lots ... read more
