This was our last real day of our holiday. We left Edmundston early in the morning to meet up with Claude’s Uncle Jacques at his cabin near Edmundston. They live in Levis, so not very far from us in St. Raymond, but we hadn’t managed to link up yet. Luckily for us, he was out at his cabin this week, so we got to have breakfast with him there. He enjoyed showing the boys his tree house for kids and his tarzan rope. Both boys managed to wipe out pretty good on the rope swing.
Edmunston is almost on the Quebec border (and the Maine border too) so we were very quickly into Quebec. Shortly into Quebec, we stopped in St. Eusebe to have lunch with Claude’s Aunt Lulu and Uncle Roger. The boys had lots of fun playing with the kittens who had grown quite a bit since we were there in March. They made the cats a cardboard box house and were thrilled that they instantly started to play with it.
Our last destination for the day was to have one last visit to St. Jean Port Joli. This is a famous wood carving town. We had
been in the fall but most of the stores were closed that late in the year so we wanted one last visit. Because visiting with family always takes longer than planned, especially when you know it will be quite a while before you visit again, we got to St. Jean quite late in the day, but we did manage to visit a couple of shops before they closed.
We were very lucky because one of the shops we did visit was that of Noel Guay and his son Mario. They do beautiful wildlife carvings. I had seen them on line because they also teach carving, and until I found my class locally, I had contemplated taking a weekend course in St. Jean Port Joli. Monsieur Guay was very nice and spent a great deal of time with Paul and I talking about the carvings. Paul told him he wanted to carve when he was old enough. M. Gual said his son started when he was 6 so now Paul will be begging me even more to start! Claude picked out a beautiful bear’s head eating blueberries carved out of a tree branch. Paul chose an eagle head carved in
sumac. Marc chose a little puffin on a log. I had explained that I had started to carve while here in Quebec so as we were leaving he gave Paul and I each a letter opener blank to carve ourselves. Mine is an owl and Paul’s is a duck. That was so very nice of him. He let me take a picture of his finished openers so we would know what it should look like in the end.
We spent the last night of our holiday just down the road from St. Jean in Montmagny. We stayed int he same hotel that we had been in when the storm stranded us for an extra night back at spring break. The boys had a good last night in the pool.
The only down side of our day is that I managed to lose the main diamond in my wedding ring while we were in St. Jean Port Joli. Paul had caught my hand and ring on his pants while we were walking together and it must have sheared off the claws. We looked all over for the diamond but of course had no luck in finding it.
