Salmon Arm to Vancouver We said good bye to our friends Bill and Robin Dawes on Thursday morning in Salmon Arm and headed west. We stopped in Sorrento and visited the graves of my mother and father. I think they would have approved of our adventure - they were always ones for travelling and trying new things. They are buried in the small Anglican churchyard beside the highway in Sorrento. Though it is only a stone's throw from the highway, it is peaceful there under the huge cedars. I was surprised by the power of the emotion I felt on this visit. I do miss them. On we went to Kamloops. We stopped at a lookout above the Thompson. We went from the almost rainforest around the Shushwap to near desert conditions around Kamloops. There were ... read more

Adams Rivers is one of BC's most well-known salmon spawning location. Salmon Run most often occur in early October, when over 100,000 salmon making their journey upstream to spawn and die. This is definitely a must-see for any visitors or Canadian. I visited Adams Rivers in October 2014 to see this famous event, and I was definitely impressed. The 10m wide river is almost filled with sockeye salmon, and a lot of caresses on the river banks. Stream condition and riparian habitat is a crucial factor in determining salmon production rate, because only a fraction of the juvenile salmons can make it back to the ocean. Water temperature, water contamination level, oxygen level, the amount of shade, and sediment level can all affect the survival rate of the salmons. During this trip, I have also visited ... read more

David and I had been persuaded to attend this festival months ago by our friends, Mark and Judy, who had attended it a couple times before. As you’ll see, we were not disappointed. Before I get to that though, I must mention an unfortunate incident. On the road to Salmon Arm, we had a text saying that Jim (Mark’s brother) and Lisa’s trailer had separated from their truck while going through the Roger's Pass. Apparently, there was a bad weld on the frame and it separated from the trailer. Very scary! The trailer was totalled, but miraculously, no one was hurt. And, most importantly, Jim and Lisa were able to join our group for the festival. We were all very thankful! This festival provides camping right on site. So you can come and go from the ... read more

We were up at 5am this morning to catch our 8am ferry. We had a 40 minute drive to the ferry terminal and we had to arrive 30 minutes early to assure we make the ferry. I sure will miss Vancouver Island. We all decided that it was much better up north and next time that is where we will stay. Victoria is beautiful, but quite the tourist trap. The ferry was on time and we made it to the Tswassen terminal in 90 minutes. Although this ferry was much cleaner and newer, the scenery was not as grand as our ride from Anacortes. The drive from Tswassen to Sicamous was VERY busy! There are numerous lakes and we came to find out that the legal drinking age here is 18. We couldn’t figure out why ... read more

So after almost 10 hours of loading all our stuff left our house yesterday and we finally departed Gilbert drive this afternoon. The plan was to leave PG by noon but of course that didn't happen. We left the house shortly after noon but had to make a few stops before leaving town. Our friend Danielle did not have her baby as requested (!) so we'll have to wait for a while before we get to meet baby number 3! The drive was good - Samuel did really well, Paul drove, Lynne slept and read!!! We are now with our friends Lorne and Cheri in Salmon Arm. At the moment Lorne and Paul are pouring over the map working out what would be the best way to go from here....so who knows where the next stop ... read more

Getting all the paperwork in order adn have recieved Dakotah's Math textbook so she can keep up with her school while we are away. And we recieved our prescription for Malaria Prevention. It seems you have a choice between terrible horrible or really bad side effects. So we got prescription for the side effects too. I took a few days off of preparation as it felt like it was taking over along with trying to get all my work stuff completed before I leave. We presented or plans to the Church on Sunday. I was so nervous during the presentation. I'm not too sure why I was so nervous but Dakotah did awsome presenting her part. I am so proud of her. The night before presenting I recieved the preliminary list of things that we ... read more
