Our 7-Day Tour through the Canadian Rockies Rocky Mountaineer Tour 19-20 July – Vancouver to Kamloops to Jasper It was an early start from Vancouver with our Rocky Mountaineer host meeting us in the foyer of our hotel. Tom and I slept in (!!!) so it was a big rush to get ready but we made it. We didn’t have to have breakfast as this was to be our first meal on the Mountaineer. A truly unique opportunity to experience nature's spectacular beauty, this incredible adventure us to some of the world's most treasured natural wonders. Our bus took us to the train station. The welcome hall was full of people waiting to bord the Rocky Mountaineer. A man was playing a grand piano. Soon, we were called over to listen to a man playing bagpipes ... read more

Riding out of Dawson Creek this morning was 'one out of the box' weather wise. We set off towards Jasper changing time zones by one hour as we entered Alberta. We rode through Grand Prairie County where there was a lot of harvesting and hay making happening. Once we got to Grand Prairie city we stopped for a break and a drink. Grand Prairie is quite a large and established city which displayed well in the sun and blue sky. The morning's ride was very scenic with snow capped mountains and reflective lakes. We started to get a bit hungry and saddle sore but places to stop for a refreshment were scarce to none. We rode through Greenview which was an industrial area where they appeared to be mining coal. There were rich seams of it ... read more

Kamloops Weather http://www.worldtimeserver.com/weather_in_CA-BC.aspx?forecastid=CAXX0211 Hello from Jasper Canada this morning. It was pretty early when we got started – what kind of vacation has a 5:30 wake-up call? We had almost everything packed last night but still needed to get the last minute things packed and the suitcases out at 6:00. We just made it but figured that it wasn’t really a serious deadline. It turns out that the truck was picking up bags from in front of our cabin at 6:05 so David checked to see if we had placed the luggage in the right place (at the back door of the cabin). Our bags were already on the truck by then. We were told that there were about 600 suitcases from several tours on a truck headed for Kamloops (where we will spend the night). ... read more

Geo: 50.6761, -120.338We woke up this morning to clear and sunny skies, and although it was only 46 degrees when we left the hotel at 8:15, the day looked very promising. As a matter of fact, by the time we got to our hotel, it was over 90 degrees and a wardrobe change was required mid-way through. After our usual morning routine, we headed north to Lake Louise for another try at seeing a place I had heard of from my parents, who visited there in 1954. And it certainly did not disappoint. We had to climb in altitude to find this treasure nestled in the palms of the surrounding mountains. Clear aqua blue in color, it is fed in part by the glacier that hovers above it which, under the rays of the sun, creates ... read more

9 days, 4900km, 0 injuries, and we're not even done yet! Only tomorrow left on the road and then it's home in Vancouver! I have to say, it has been an incredible trip and privilege to be able to do something like this. And even more entertaining is the thought that we'll be coming back through the US of A. Only something a gang of crazies would do? Well... It's a good thing we're absolutely bonkers. Today's wake-up came not from the usual rustling of my tent, but rather by the roaring engines of passing campers and Chevy trucks. It wasn't really what I'd call a rude awakening, since by then I was pretty much just lazing on my mat, but damn those things can be loud. Sorry you need to compensate there buddy! Anywho, we ... read more

West of Hinton, we drove into the Alberta potion of the Rockies (photos 1 and 2). I love Alberta, make no mistake. I have lived nine of my years there. I find these Alberta mountains to be the most beautiful of all the mountains that I have ever seen. Shortly before crossing into BC, we saw this Elk (photo 3). If my hunting skills are anything like my photography, perhaps I should not get a licence this year! This marks the fourth large mammal on this trip (Moose in N. Ont, bear and two elk in AB). The cat was very interested in something outside (photo 4). I suspect she found wildlife of particular interest to her (photo 5), but I have no proof to back up this claim. After five hours, we finally made it ... read more

Geo: 50.6761, -120.338The alarm was set for 5.15 am but really it was superfluous because our internal alarms had us awake on the hour at 1, 2, 3 and 4. The 1am wake up was the best because Mac was waving the torch around in the room - he was sure someone was in the room taking the luggage! He was dreaming! The 15 minute trip to the Rocky Mountaineer Station from The Fairmont took about 45 minutes because of the stops at various motels. Naively we thought this was the full complement of our fellow travellers but when we arrived at the station our mere 52 became a swarm of 600 passengers who were boarding the train! And this number leave the station every day.To welcome us aboard there was a welcome reception complete with drinks, ... read more

Up with the sparrows for a 0715 bag pull - need to be taken to the rail station for our Rocky Mountaineer train trip. Expected to go at 0815 to the train and get breakfast on the train. Oh oh. Russell comes back from dropping the bags and tells us there has been an incident between Calgary and Banff and the train is stuck. Arranges breakfast for us at the hotel but has no more information. Everyone is a bit worried but still positive. Eventually he comes around and tells us that the train is now expected at 1015 so they will drop us at the station on their way back to Calgary. More farewells, more tears, etc. On our own now and we walk down the platform to our allocated carriage (CB07). Train arrives and ... read more

... read more

Where are we from? Dubbo- Australia New York City- America Kamloops- Canada Where did we meet? We met on a tour traveling through Western Europe. It's not everyday you quit your job and put your life on hold to jump on a plane and head to the other side of the world, especially at the age 19.. but thats exactly what I did on July 5th 2013. The destination was London, England.. I had strong pre arranged plans on a tour that was a month camping around Western Europe, all I could think about was the sights and places I was going to see and wonder through.. I never once thought about who I would meet or what friendships I would make, which is strange because it's the first thing I think about now. I could ... read more
