Winter sunlight filtered through the tall poplars of Carburn Park. The sheen on the far edges of the swiftly flowing Bow River revealed ducks and geese floating, dipping and walking on thin ice. Easily punching through the crusty snow with our boots, our group lined up on the shore to watch the antics of the birds basking in warm winds. Traipsing through the woods on well-trodden paths, we came to a tree selected by a porcupine for being well out of the way of predators and the curious. Curled into the fork of the trunk and a large branch, it occasionally opened its eyes to check if we were gone or not. Our leaving was precipitated by a couple of young deer, attracted to the birdseed offered by hand. Really, the bird seed was for the ... read more

1.Two Jack Lake with Patrick - Two Jack Lake named after Jack Stanley, who operated a boat concession on lake Minnewanka at one time, and Jack Watters, who worked for the mines in Bankhead, a town which flourished at the base of Cascade Mountain just after the turn of the century. 2.Lake Windermere with Pam - Lake Windermere wasn’t always called what it is today. It was first named Lower Columbia Lake. The average depth of the lake is only 15 ft (4 ½ m). Windermere and Invermere were named after regions in Britain. Tens of thousands of years ago, most of the Rocky Mountain Trench, as we know it today lay under about 6,000 feet of ice. As the ice gradually melted, it left behind lakes, rivers and streams in the valleys between the mountain ... read more

Bankhead is a ghost town which flanks Cascade Mountain and lies just south of Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park. The Canadian Anthracite Company was the first to open a Cascade Mountain coal mine in Anthracite, Banff in 1886. The difficult slanted coal seams within Cascade Mountain led miners below the water table, causing water to flood into the mine. The Anthracite coal mine ceased operations in 1904. The Canadian Pacific Railway had a voracious appetite for high-quality anthracite coal for its operations. The CPR thus formed the Pacific Coal Company, which began coal mining operations in Bankhead, Alberta in 1903. While the supply of coal underneath Bankhead was plentiful, actually getting at it was another matter. Much of the stuff lay in difficult to access folding and faulted seams that forced miners to dig an ... read more

Fine light snow fell most of our day in Lake Louise. Insidious, because the World Cup skiing races had to be cancelled due to excess snow. This meant that lots of international tourists were walking along the lake edge, revelling in the famous but shrouded views. Dangerously, some ventured onto the ice, despite the warning signs of soft ice - anything for this once-in-a-life-time photo. While the others in the hiking club challenged themselves with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, I went for tea in the Chateau . The covid-era Chateau has banned seating in or near the café - takeout only. The Lakeview restaurant has expanded to the full length of the lobby, plus, a high-end restaurant, the Fairview, has been squeezed into a couple of windows-with-the-view. Actually, all t... read more

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is more than a grand luxury hotel; it is a major part of Canada’s colorful history. The hotel itself has beginnings with the naming and colonization of Lake Louise. While employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1882, Thomas Wilson was procuring equipment for construction when he heard the sounds of a nearby avalanche. His native companions informed him the sounds were coming from the “snow mountains above the lake.” They took him there on horseback and what he saw, he named Emerald Lake because of its blue and green water. In 1890, Canadian Pacific Railway general manager Cornelius Van Horne had a one-story log cabin constructed on the shore of Lake Louise. This small log cabin had one central area that was used as a dining room, office, bar, and ... read more
