Alberta Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

The Walk
Tray's out of breath already.
A bit cloudy and dull this morning, but we were up early and went for a brisk half hour walk around Canmore. We set off accross the Bow Valley trail (sounds like a hikers path, it's not, it's just the main road through Canmore) we crossed the railway and headed for policemans creek. This is a scenic path that runs along side the stream that runs through the town. We passed the "Big Head" just off main street - The striking sculpture - named Big Head, a translation of the Gaelic word Ceanmore, a variation of the town's name. This publicly [View Full Entry]

View of the day centre from the car park.
The Nordic centre in Canmore was developed for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games Nordic events and arguably put the town of Canmore on the map. In the winter this place is a buzzing cross-country ski venue but in the summer it hosts walkers and the reason i'm here, mountain biking. In fact there are more than 100 km of single and double-track mountain bike trails. Needless to say i didn't do them all, i just managed 20km today. [View Full Entry]

Goats Creek trailhead
Canmore - Banff Went mountain biking today, drove up towards Spray Lakes where the Goats Creek Trailhead started. The trail to Banff is approximately 24 km but it's practically all downhill so it's not that bad at all. There are some great fast stretches on this well maintained trail, basically quite a wide shail track with a few muddy patches that day after the rain the night before. I wasn't sure exactly how long it would take me but guides said 1-3 hours, so i arranged with Tray to pick me up in 2hrs from the time i set off. Well, [View Full Entry]

Sunday 6th saw the Canmore Highland Games - a celebration of everthing scottish, held every year in Canmore. Whiskey, bagpipes, Kilts and all that Scottish stuff. Seems that lots of people in Canmore have Scottish decendants, Canmore is a Scottish name after all. Not much there if you are English ! [View Full Entry]

Goats Creek Trail car park
The day we decided to trek up Ha Ling Peak The name of the mountain has been subject to much controversy. Originally, the mountain was referred to locally as The Beehive. In 1896 Ha Ling, a Chinese cook for the Canadian Pacific Railway (some say the Okaloosa Hotel in Canmore) was bet 50 dollars that he could not climb the peak and plant a flag on the summit in less than 10 hours. According to the Medicine Hat News of October 24 1896, he started the ascent at 7:00 am the previous Saturday morning and was back in time for lunch. [View Full Entry]

Waterton National Park, Alberta Canada Friday September 4, 2009 Another full day in a Jammer for Karen and I, riding north to the Peace Park in Alberta. Driver Bill obviously enjoys his job as a Jammer driver. He talks about the Native American traditions and provides an interesting narrative on our ride. Driving over the mountain pass is spectacular. When you view the valley you are overwhelmed by the vast rows of mountains ahead of you. We have a very nice lunch at the lovely Prince of Whales Hotel. Our servers are wearing kilts and are students from a hotel management [View Full Entry]

On the road in the Northwest Territories
Today is the day to get back on the road. It has been so, absolutely, breathtaking, wonderful, awesome to spend such quality time with Nigel and Mel. They are such an inspiration for me - how they have embraced their lives up north...making the most of it...camping, hiking, garage sales, heading out late at night to watch and maybe capture the northern lights! Nigel and Mel work and play well!!!! Got the car loaded and on the road before 11! (got gas and ice). The drive was very quiet and didn't seem as long as when I drove to Yellowknife just [View Full Entry]

Another day of driving! I still haven't made it to Edmonton! Stopped at Peace River, what a beautiful town! the scenery along the way has been extremely beautiful! wheat, canola, green pines...even saw a coyote when I left Hutch Lake! Lots of different birds. Today, magpies, hawks, ravens...With driving, you never know what is going to be around the bend. In Alberta, I was driving, and I came across, soft green, rolling hills known as Swan Hills. Beautiful! Once again, found a campsite where it is self serve. Set up, cooked, went for a walk about and turn in early. Otis [View Full Entry]
