Alberta Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

The hike
The hike
Water, thank goodness, says Otis, the dog
A very brisk morning! Off to Banff to hike Sulpher Mountain. Lots of switchbacks. Went from 5200 ft. To 7484 ft, a total distance one way 5.5 km. The hike was moderate to strenuous, still not used to the elevation. Otis and I took our time and met some lovely folks along the way. Otis is such a trooper - he just keeps on going and going, and only laid down while I had lunch at the top. It started to rain on the trail - but as the natives say, “wait, the weather will change in about 5 minutes!” And [View Full Entry]

The hike

Up early and on the road just after 10 am. Drove to Medicine Hat and found a great cafe to get on the internet and put up several more blogs and send out a few emails. Started back on the road around 2 pm, after Otis having a bit of a stretch. Drove through the most spectular weather, you could see it coming (or I guess I was driving into the storm), which lasted about 4 minutes! Literally drove through Calgary and into Banff National Park. The temperature dropped again to 9 - 12 C, depending on where you are. Decided [View Full Entry]

Banff

... We didn't see any. It was only after we finished our back country hike that we found out there were thousands of them lerking around - in fact you are more likely to see a bear than a human. Well we didn't see either. We hiked for 70km without seeing anyone over the first three days - a little disconcerting with the threat of bears (NB. It is high season for bears as the berries are out - in fact bears can eat up to 250,000 berries a day in the summer - they are machines and we know this [View Full Entry]

View from a loo
Sawbuck Valley

Sorry to be boring but its been another 5 days of riding through stunning scenery on nice twisty roads with no humorous little mishaps to report. The first few hundred miles were through the forested mountains at the southern end of the Stewart-Cassiar Highway and we couldn't move for bears. There were loads of them at the road side including some very cute cubs peaking over the top of the ditch to see if it was safe to cross the road. We got rather too close for comfort to one bear - as we came round one nice sweeping bend a [View Full Entry]

Totem Poles
approaching Jasper National Park
Mt Edith Cavel

Stamps Game North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
So my mom and dad are season ticket holders for the Calgary Stampeders who are our Canadian Football team here. Since dad was busy with driving he decided not to go to the game so I got to go to the game with mom. We went down a bit early and went to the tailgate party. It was good but except that this year they seem to have really cracked down on the drinking at the tailgate's. The Stamps were playing the Saskatchewan Roughriders. It was a really good game. The weather started off great but then quickly turned not so [View Full Entry]
