Alberta Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

On the road in the Northwest Territories
Today is the day to get back on the road. It has been so, absolutely, breathtaking, wonderful, awesome to spend such quality time with Nigel and Mel. They are such an inspiration for me - how they have embraced their lives up north...making the most of it...camping, hiking, garage sales, heading out late at night to watch and maybe capture the northern lights! Nigel and Mel work and play well!!!! Got the car loaded and on the road before 11! (got gas and ice). The drive was very quiet and didn't seem as long as when I drove to Yellowknife just [View Full Entry]

Another day of driving! I still haven't made it to Edmonton! Stopped at Peace River, what a beautiful town! the scenery along the way has been extremely beautiful! wheat, canola, green pines...even saw a coyote when I left Hutch Lake! Lots of different birds. Today, magpies, hawks, ravens...With driving, you never know what is going to be around the bend. In Alberta, I was driving, and I came across, soft green, rolling hills known as Swan Hills. Beautiful! Once again, found a campsite where it is self serve. Set up, cooked, went for a walk about and turn in early. Otis [View Full Entry]

Calgary - Shopping As we are missing one of our bags we were missing clothing and other bits and bobs "& things like that" we needed to do some shopping. Calgary is an easy drive about an hour away straight down the highway. We thought that before we started shopping we get something to east so we stopped for a "snack" at Barley Mill pub. Tray has mini Yorkshire puddings stuffed with gravy and beef... really nice. [View Full Entry]

Coyote Siting After tea time we went for a short drive down the Bow Valley Parkway, this is the old road that runs west out of Banff, it's well known for wildlife sitings. We saw a a Coyote at a bit of a distance, it stopped to look at us and then carried on about it's daily business. [View Full Entry]

Left the Marriott at Gatwick (good hotel) to check in with Thomas Cook for our 10.30 am flight to Calgary. We managed to get to the front of the queue just before the baggage belt failed. The check in desk assistant was not very sympathetic and actually nodded off at one point ! We were left to load our own bags in a baggage cage nearby, no problem, at least we weren't at the end of what was by now a very long queue. I loaded the bags one by one and placed them next to each other. We were a [View Full Entry]

It's hard to believe that it's only a week away. I packed my back pack again yesterday. I think I have everything I'm going to need. It's really weird going through everything and deciding if I need another T-shirt or if I should leave the space for one of the numerous souvenirs I'm going to pick up along the road. After going through all the material objects I have gathered over the years it has all come down to a simple cooler of items that I want to keep. Even those items are things that close friends have given me over [View Full Entry]

greeetings from banff! We arrived here nearly two weeks ago on a monday at around 930pm after a 12 hour bus ride through the rockies, which was so amazing. Goudly met us at the bus and we ventured to the hostel and then stright to the bar downstairs. Missy and Gouldy had been here nearly 6 weeks already, so we got instantly introduced to a whole crew a people who work in town, mostly Aussies. The next morning we hiked up Tunnel mountain, the smallest of the mountains in town, but had the most amazing view of banff and the national [View Full Entry]
