I just booked myself into a sweet hostel in cappadocia. its this neat place in the center of turkey were volcanic ash created these cool chimeny type structures and the early christians turned some into churches, stores, and houses. Now, the have hostels built into them. theres lots of hiking and outdoor type activities so i should have a good time. its also cheap so i can wind a bit more time off the clock. the laptop is working well again. not sure what happened to it or how it repaired itself, but im glad. ive made my way up to a city on the med coast called antalya. its a nice town on the verge of blowing up. however it is also hot as hell here. i got a chance to walk around old town ... read more

Antalya I woke up early to catch my 8:30 am flight. One of the interesting things is that Turkey generally does not wake up early. I missed out on breakfast because I was up too early. I left the hostel at about 6:45 am. I decided I was going to catch the bus to the airport and not get a taxi. On the way out of the old city (Kaleici), I had 3 dogs decide to be my escort to Hadrian's gate - the gate to the old city. I got a few snapshots in of Antalya, but I really did not tour the city and the sites, it was more just a place to travel through. As I was trying to find the bus to the airport - Halmania Service I found out that it ... read more

Well after being anquious all night to climb Mount Olympos today (2455 m), I got the bad news since I was the only one who wanted to do this that the price was double. So it went from 100 YTL to 200 YTL ($85 - $170 USD). Out of principal I decided not too and plus I wanted to make sure I got to Antalya in decent time since I was flying out back to Istanbul on an early morning flight. I had stayed at Turkman's Treehouses and some of the good tours were being offered by Kadir's Treehouses. I went over to Kadir's, they were far more organized for trips, they did rock climbing, canyoning, mountain biking, sea kayaking,...all the stuff I love. So I was going to Rock Climb but I figured that I ... read more

After my first night in the tree house and the sun beating down on me at about 6 am, I decided that I was time to get up. I guess I can sleep when I am dead. Today I was going on my boat cruise, always fun to be on the water and always fun to meet new people. In Turkey a lot of things are hurry up and wait. I had breakfast then was waiting for the ... read more

After the first night decent sleep, I awoke to the sight of the lovely Zeus mountains along the coast of Olympos along the Mediterranean sea. Today is a day to cath-up on my blog, sit on the beach and go for the tour of the flames. I also moved into one of the tree house rooms from the room they put me in late last night (air conditioned, tv, bathroom, air conditioned, air conditioned). I must be crazy. About Olympos In Homer's epics, the god's have a feast at Mt. Olypos; discuss problems relating to humanity, and converse for hours. This is known as a place where one's soul feels the most soloce, where one can think about all their problems for lenghts of time and quitely find solutions, and peace. Olympos was established in the ... read more

I spent 4 full days at the rehab centers this week, mainly observing the therapists and the teachers at work. It has been fascinating to learn the ins and outs of therapy services children receive here in Turkey. Here’s the scoop: Rehab centers are for children with a variety of special needs, with a large percentage of the children who attend them diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Mental Retardation, and Learning Disabilities. I also saw a boy with Spina Bifida and a 19 year old with Muscular Dystrophy. Over 500 children total are served by these two rehab centers. There are other places children receive rehabilitation and special education in town as well, such as at the University, the hospital, an orphanage for children with disabilities, a trade school for children with special needs, and special ... read more

Olympos and Goreme We are continuing our way through Turkey on the way to Syria on our big yellow truck. We had a quick 2 night stay at the Roman runis of Olympos. The ruins themsleves are okay but we were probably more excited about going to the beach, unfortunately it was a rocky beach of which can prove to be difficult to get in and out of the water. We took the opportunity to relax and unwind - travelling can be hard work! I sometimes do not think that everyone relises how tough it can be spending every day visiting new and interesting places. The place that we stayed at in Olympos was like some strange kind of hippie commune- everyone was really laid back (perhaps a little too so), we all ate meals together ... read more

I’ve been in Turkey for a week now, and here’s the story: Lessons of the week: 1. God answers prayer, even if it's delayed 2. Just being in another country is enough to see the world through a different sort of lens, and make you question your opinions on things, and spark realizations about little things- like how honesty in business is often taken for granted in the US, how important it is to know that others have confidence in you, how the definition of Christianity is really misunderstood, here and around the world, how humor can help any situation and bond two very different people together who don't even speak the same language, and how glad I am that I don't have to wear a really really hot scarf and fully cover by body and ... read more

We boarded yet another night bus with the sort of enthusiasm typically reserved for a visit to the dentist. As we had come to expect, a clean cut, well dressed man happily served us refreshments upon take-off, and, promptly freshened the air inside the bus as we set off on our trip to Antalya. Meanwhile, the child seated behind us commenced her evening long complaint session, crying at every conceivable opportunity. Her caretakers, seemingly deaf and possessing absolutely zero parenting skills, did nothing to calm her or her flailing appendages which spent most of their time slamming into the back of my seat. After a couple hours of squealing, the child did a poo in her diaper effectively destroying the last shred of comfort inside the bus. Even the conductor’s deliciously scented lemon air freshener was ... read more
