There are seven churches in Asia minor that are addressed in the first three chapters of the Book of Revelation: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. We were in/or near four of the seven today and we'll be in Ephesus later this week. I don't know much about the Book of Revelation, but this journey is transforming these abstract communities into real people with real struggles. As we speed down the highway after landing in Izmir (Smyrna), we are surrounded by beautiful mountains, fields of grapes, figs (fresh figs from the road side stand are way better than Fig Newtons), oranges and many other fruits. On this hot, muggy day, we had the chance to visit Sardis and Laodicea and walk among the ruins of the Persians, Greeks, Romans as well as early Christian ... read more

A journey of 120 miles, up into & over the Taurus mountains. Again, vast expanses of mountains, scrub & trees with the road (a dual carriageway blasted through the mountains) seemingly going on forever. We detoured slightly & stopped off at yet another ancient city, Kibyre. The theatre here is 200 metres long, help 10,000 people who could watch athletics, chariot racing & Russel Crowe look alikes. Then, everything went green once we neared the mountain tops – the change was so dramatic. Very little surface water but obviously lots of springs – it's from here that the Turks are to supply water to Cyprus via an undersea pipeline. As we approached Pamukkale you could see the vast expanse of white...the famous world heritage site. We couldn't find the site but there was another right opposite ... read more

Today was too much travel. We were up at 6 and on the road by 7 ish. We traveled 620 km thrift to Pumakkale. The country side is simply beautiful...but I'm getting a bit sick of being in a bus to be honest. We could have flown here. None the less stopped for a couple meals. Got some gifts for my sister too. Got to the hotel, very relieved it was a nice big bed and a very clean room. The first thing Kaine did in the room was call for the day spa for massages for us both. What a treat. Off to the thermal pools at the Collasse spa hotel (where we stayed) until my 7pm massage. What an interesting massage, she had sharp nails and it was bare all up top. Dinner time ... read more

To walk in the water from the Pamukkale hot spring is a sweet luxury The first half of this trip I, Ake, spent visiting various ancient sites in the southeast of Turkey. But there was one more thing I wanted to see while being in this part of Turkey and that was Pamukkale. Pamukkale is a place I bypassed when I travelled in Turkey many years ago. Since then I have been thinking about going there many times but haven't found time to until now. It took me twenty years of planning to make it to Pamukkale but finally I have. You might argue that Pamukkale is two sites, not one. The famous one of these two being Pamukkale with its white terraces. The other site, being the less famous one, is Hierapolis which is the ... read more

We went to the ruins of an ancient Roman city, that are right by the white cliffs. We saw the old grave yard and took zombie pictures. Then we saw the grand market and the really different bathroom, where you went was side by side. I couldn't imagine having to use the bathroom with so many people around. We continued on looking at the architecture and seeing old Roman baths and concert halls. We then saw the calcium pools and the ruins of the old Apollo temple now a pool to soak in, Elissa, Rachel and me went in for awhile. After the swim, we had lunch and ice-cream. Then we walked down the calcium pools, they were really cool and felt weird on your feet at places because the calcium goes between your toes. The ... read more

Near Pamukkale there is a large, well preserved ancient Roman city. We walked through its streets and Necropolis. The Necropolis is huge since many people came to this city to try to be cured of illnesses by the hot springs. There is rank upon rank of tombs and older style tumulus, where they mounded earth in a circle over top a tomb. There are tombs set on top of tombs. You can see some carvings left, to protect their owners. The city has some of its market preserved, the latrines, a large part of its library, the theatre is in very good shape (could fit 3000), and parts of the Artemis temple although the Apollo lies under water in the calcium hot spring pool due to earth quakes. Walking through the market and sitting on the ... read more

The second day in Pamukkale, I decided to sleep in - the first time I've been able to truly relax on my little trip. I got some breakfast around 8:30 - cucumbers, bread with butter, olives, and cheese with pomegranate juice - before checking out at 9:30. I left my bags at the hotel and walked up to Pamukkale once again. Going up this morning was so much more refreshing - it was cool and there were hardly any tourists walking. I was able to take my time to get some good photos and enjoy this beautiful natural creation. Well, as natural as it can be. I love the fact that tourists are allowed to visit and thoroughly enjoy these areas, but sometimes you worry about the traffic destroying nature. The park here has a good ... read more

I woke bright and early this morning to catch my 6:20am flight to Denizli and start the second phase of my trip: Pamukkale. First of all, let me just say how absolutely amazing our hotel in Istanbul was. We stayed at the Ferman Hotel in the Sultanamet area and they were just phenomenal. The rooms were nice, the rooftop terrace was perfect, the location was the best, and the staff are pretty much the most helpful and genuinely nice hotel staff I have ever (EVER) come across. This hotel gets my highest recommendation. Anyway, so as I'd requested the previous evening, I got a 4am wake up call and a 4:30am shuttle to the airport. Still not overly impressed with the airport - the layout is strange and the employees are just generally not friendly. This ... read more
