Everyone knows that oil is a valuable resource. You know it when you fill up your tank at the gas station, when you get your gas bill, or when they add those ridiculous fuel surcharges to the price of your airfare. But I never really, FULLY, understood the price of oil until I looked out across the business district of Dubai from my hotel balcony on Sheikh Zayed Street... 50-story plate glass skyscrapers lining the road, Ferraris and Jaguars racing down it, and the tallest building in the world visible a bit off in the distance to my right. It dawned [View Full Entry]

Sunday 7 December. It is less than a week since I left Cornwall but it seems an age already with experiencing so many different things. A fairly negative day. I woke early and walked to the Post Office. It was windy and therefore dusty. All buildings are vast and spread out and the entrances are never where you expect them to be. Eventually I found the PO after having to retrace my steps and attempting various entrances I found the correct one to buy stamps. I only wanted to return a book that had been given to me by Kath for [View Full Entry]

Salalah Oman 1000kms south of Muscat. Staying at Salalah Tourist Hotel. What makes me laugh is that the taxi driver will often ask you if this is the way to your hotel. I don't know I live in another country-you live here-you tell me. It is a new hotel that could be nice but is already going to seed and quite dusty. Costs just over £30 inc. breakfast- coffee/toast/jam. Just like my backpackers! Made enquiries about half day tour £80! So managed to get Abdullah from the hotel to take me in the hotel Mercedes for half that. Visited Taqa pretty [View Full Entry]

My stars for when I set off: It will be a rare Taurean who isn't planning some kind of a trip. In fact, there are many delights in store-far too many to mention. And it's no small trail you'll be blazing. Call my starline......... Bought a SIM card for my phone - from England the number is 00 968 98205829 so texts will be happily received! Although I am useless at texting so you may not get a reply. Sleeper train from Truro was good except that they called me when the train had already arrive at Reading which only gave [View Full Entry]

O-man how good is Oman Middle East » Oman » Muscat
The journey to get here has been a bit of a tour though, due to unexpectedly spending an extra night in Kuwait. Spending the extra night menat trying to juggle two flights to still make it here in time to fly to India. Fortunately the lady at Gulf Air was very understanding and threw up a few options. After being waitlisted for the connection from Bahrain to Muscat there was a glimmer of hope. Then someone blew out the candle and I ended up having to spend the night at Bahrain airport waiting for an early morning flight. All was not [View Full Entry]

This past weekend I went to Muscat, Oman with a friend of mine from work, Katrina. We had a really great time and some fun adventures. The weekend started a little bit rough because Katrina lost her phone, we almost missed our flight, our hotel was surrounded by barbed wire and the room our travel agent booked smelled like gouda! When you travel, though, you have to roll with the punches. We decided to instead focus on the fact that I am pretty sure that I ran into a Sheikh at the airport, we got a free meal on our 45 [View Full Entry]

From Cairo, our flight initially took us over the Red Sea, then across the heart of Saudi Arabia. From there, we turned south, heading over the tiny gulf states of Bahrain and Qatar until we crossed into the United Arab Emirates, the bright lights of Dubai easily visible along the horizon. Finally we flew into the Sultanate of Oman, a flight time of just three and a half hours. Angela and I had high hopes for Muscat. We couldn’t wait to see the white buildings and the clear blue waters of the Gulf of Oman. In every picture we’d seen, Muscat [View Full Entry]
