In Abu Dhabi rannten ... read more

Waking up this morning (Saturday 4/2) I feel awful, streaming nose and a hacking cough. I’ve tested negative for Covid but I feel very self conscious coughing so much in an environment where people are so concerned with sickness. So the long and the short of it is I am going to spend today in our cabin enjoying the sun on the balcony and recovering from my cold. Unfortunately that means Ian will be writing for you today. You have been warned! I am temporarily leaving the Plague Ship Queen Mary 2 for the Impressions of Muscat tour. The first stop is the Grand Mosque. It is the fourth biggest mosque in the World and was finished in 2006. The Grand Mosque in Dubai was finished in 2008 and in the style so typical of the ... read more

After four uneventful days at sea we reach Salalah, Oman and berth in a not very attractive container port. Salalah is the capital city of the Dhofar region of Oman and is in the south of the country. It is the second biggest city in the country and is judging from what we can see relatively industrial. The cement works is a local landmark and then some ! Salalah along with Yemen experience a monsoon season which lasts from July to September. (So we should be ok!) During the rains the brown and dry landscape we see is transformed to a beautiful lush green and locals and tourists flock to Salalah to experience it. But Salalah’s real claim to fame is its ancient frankincense trade and UNESCO has put it on it’s World Heritage Lis, naming ... read more

While the Diamond Princess was on all the front pages, held up in Japan and the Corona Virus was rapidly spreading and now had at a foothold in least half the world’s nations, we were docking in Muscat, vaguely aware that something was happening but, at this stage, not concerned. We arrived several hours late, due to the weather, so we were told, but during the night and this morning the sea seemed to be as smooth as a millpond. If we did have a patch of bad weather, the ship must have bloody good stabilisers as we never felt the slightest bump!! As it turns out, we didn’t lose any time here as we departed several hours later than scheduled. The capital of Oman is Muscat. We’ve been here twice before so when Beryl and ... read more

Having made a booking last week, I turned up at the diving centre at 8am as instructed, to an air of organised chaos. I chatted to a couple of French people who were also planning to dive but had never dived before. So my five year lapse since my 32nd dive (according to my PADI records - I struggle to recall half of those), put me in the category of semi-pro by comparison. I was instructed by one of the staff to pick out my kit, which I set about doing. Ever increasing numbers of people showed up, including A couple who had been at Wahibi Sands for NYE as well (they also thought it was a bit crap), and we were divided into the diving camp and the snorkelling camp. All in all there were ... read more

Along the route from Sur to Muscat I had been intending to climb one of the other climbs featured for Oman on the website Climbbybike (there are only four), as the starting point was just off the main highway. However after catching a glimpse of it before the turn off I elected to skip that option as, from the short section I saw, it appeared to be a murderous, near vertical, corrugated surfaced, wall of death that might be doable on a mountain bike but would lead to blood and tears on a road bike. So sod it. And for crying out loud, this is supposed to be a holiday... So I sailed onto the next option on the list of potential activities that I had jotted down over breakfast - Wadi Tiwi. The lower reaches ... read more

I set off along the coast from the rocky headland where my hotel was located at the leisurely time of 9am. The nice smooth road with very light traffic hugged the azure Arabian Sea for several kilometres so I watched as the fishing boats laboured out through the chop. After a while the road veered inland and that was the last I saw of the sea for a couple of hours. So much for my coastal ride! The scenery reverted to the fail safe option in Oman - variations on the arid and rocky theme. I passed through dry rocky gorges, descended onto arid boulder strewn planes, wound my way through landscapes akin to deserted quarries or recent commandeered building sites. On the map a forest a was identified, so I had been looking forward to ... read more

Welcome to 2020! As the desert camp I stayed in for new year’s eve was solely occupied by groups of squawking Italians or couples from various European countries, it was a far cry from the fun cool place to welcome in the new year that I had anticipated. In fact I felt like a right lemon on my tod. Apart from chatting to the Hungarian couple I shared the transfer with and a French couple I had photographed by the camels I didn’t talk to anyone aside from the staff last night so I retired to bed well before midnight, got a bit grouchy with the racket from the Italians around the time new year arrived and then woke up properly to welcome in 2020 with the first sunrise of the new decade from atop the ... read more
