I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world. - Mary Anne Radmacher It was nice having a later morning than usual this morning, but we were woken up at around 4:30 by the very loud call to prayer. We had a leisurely breakfast in the hotel and then Susan and I went for a walk around the streets of Aqaba around our hotel. We found a liquor store that was open so we bought a small bottle of gin, a couple of cans of tonic, and a bottle of Arak (the brand name is Haddad!). Turns out the brand name Haddad is very common (arak, rum, wine, etc). We left the hotel about 10:30 for the drive to Wadi Rum. The scenery was lovely the whole way, ... read more

Geo: 30.5852, 36.2384Today we headed into the desert for a night in a desert camp. This is a camp styled after a bedoiun camp. We were the only ones there which was nice. After lunch we did a 3 hour ride through the desert in the backs of pick up trucks outfitted with benches on either side of the truck bed. It was super fun going up, over and down the sand dunes. One truck got a flat tire so we had to wait for a replacement vehicle. What do you do in the desert with time on your hands? Make a human pyramid!!On our way again to two natural bridges hewn by nature. It was so like being in Utah and very fun to see the reactions of folks who have never seen anything like ... read more

We began our day driving north from Aqaba to the Wadi Rum desert in southern Jordan. Wadi Rum is one of the most famous deserts in the world, and has been said to have the most extraordinary desert scenery you'll ever see. It has been crisscrossed for centuries by traders and pilgrims coming from neighboring Saudi Arabia and Israel and has been home to the Bedouin people until this day. The Bedouin are a nomadic people than inhabit most of the Middle East. They spend their lives grazing their goats, sheep and camels throughout the desert moving places periodically depending on the seasons. The Bedouin are renowned for their hospitality, and live by the ethos that today you are a host but tomorrow you may be a guest so no traveler is turned away and you ... read more

Our flight on Akira airlines was packed with 20-somethings heading to Eliat to party before Passover. After a five-minute taxi ride we were at the border and quickly were in Jordan. Our guide was waiting on the Jordanian side and got us through immigration and into a car very quickly. Our 23 year-old driver spoke some English, enough to point out sites along the route. The scenery is spectacular with rock formations rising up from the dessert, very barren and inhospitable. Our first stop was Wadi Rum where we spent 3 hours touring the area in a four-wheel drive. Our driver/guide was a Bedouin who is 32 and has four children. The natural scenery there is fantastic, but since I’m writing this after a day at Petra, it is definitely a #2. We also were invited ... read more

Matt and I slept in a little and got a good breakfast at our hotel (Century Park). We were able to get on the road around 9am and headed south towards Wadi Rum. Yep. It was pretty much all desert on the way there - I drove the whole way and it was nice to have a road trip without too many crazies trying to kill me. We took the Desert Highway down, which was not in the best condition and had speedbumps that came seemingly out of nowhere. However, I became an expert in recognizing and expecting them - generally at the edges of town. Generally the ride was desert, but as you approach the Wadi Rum area, you come across a spectacular view of the valley below. We were a little lost when we ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Today's great desert adventure is done and let me tell you, it was good! The cold front still holds its icy grip here though so I can promise you that it was very cold riding on top of a jeep, even when driving through the canyons at a leisure pace! Anyway, we started this day by trying out the breakfast buffet at the hotel, it didn't really float mine nor Marcus boat so to say but did it's job anyway. Then we went to the bus station to catch the bus to Wadi Rum. We had checked the day before and we also confirmed at the station house that the bus would go. When we got there a cab driver told us it wasn't coming though since it was a holiday and ... read more

Today, we had an entire day in the Wadi Rum desert. The Wadi Rum is almost a big playground; there are much rocks, and sand dunes which you can climb on. And that, covered in great scenery of orange-brown rocks, and red-orange sand. I never was in a desert before, and yesterday during the walk to our camp, I’ve had a preview. The sights that I had were beautiful, but today I really shall discover the desert and its beauty. But first, I had a cliffhanger yesterday. How was my first night in the desert, as wrote in the previous report? Well, here it goes… We discussed yesterday night who wanted to sleep outdoors, and who in the tent. We all got one mat, and you had to put your sleeping bag over it. There were ... read more

I never was into a desert before, so how would it be to stay in "the middle of nowhere", between sand (dunes), the silence, the heat and the wind? And how would it be to sleep under the stars? And how is it to live like a (Jordan) Bedouin? Today, it was the day that I visited the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan and stay in a Bedouin camp. But first, we spend the morning in Wadi Musa. You could stay in the hotel, visit the town of Wadi Musa, or book one of the two optional excursions. During my booking, I've booked one excursion, the horse riding excursion in Wadi Musa. We should be picked up by taxis at 9 am. If you choice to do the other excursion, where you could visit "The High ... read more

October 10, 2013 The time had now come for one of the sights I was most looking forward to: Wadi Rum desert and the land of Lawrence of Arabia...as mentioned I fell in love with the desert while in Morocco, so was really keen to get into another one and start exploring...and throw in the history and exploits of T.E.Lawrence and I couldn't wait to get going... Took an early bus from Petra and made it to the visitor's centre in Wadi Rum by 8:30am where we were promptly met by Rum Stars tour group, our hosts for the day and night's adventures...after the customary mint tea at their office we met our guide for the day, Mohammed, and then discovered it was just K and I on the tour...perfect! So we threw our gear and ... read more
