With this blog, we say goodbye. We ended our journey with the most wonderful “treat” ever…Petra by Night. It is only done three nights per week and we were lucky enough to be able to do this before heading back to Amman to fly home.
They light the entire As Siq and Treasury with over 1500 candles. You make the journey down the As Siq in complete silence so that you can reflect on the beauty and astonishing sights around you. The sky was so clear and the stars were out…it was truly magical!
Once you arrive at the Treasury, you sit on mats on the ground and listen to some traditional Jordanian music played by the Bedouins (and they serve you their wonderful tea!). It starts with their “guitar” like instrument that is a rectangle covered with goat skin and only one string. The highlight was when flute music came out of the dark treasury. Eventually the musician appeared in the dark entrance and made his way through the candles to stand before us. Words can’t describe this experience…to see Petra this way, glowing by candlelight, lets you truly appreciate its marvel.
I can’t imagine a more
Treasury from the As Siq
We thought it looked beautiful during the day..glowing by candlelight it was magical! amazing way to end our vacation….it was spectacular and a memory that will never fade!
This journey left us with a mixed bag of emotions. There was so much to take in, so much culture and history. Like our trips before, this one leaves it mark and changes our lives. We walk away from this trip so grateful to live in a country full of opportunity. You take for granted the daily life you have…when you truly see poverty at its worst with your own eyes, you realize just how lucky you are. The history we saw is unmatched and it still is hard to grasp how old these places really are…they are amazing.
I hope that anyone that ever considered going to Egypt…will! As we mentioned before, it is not for the light hearted! Traveling there (especially on your own) takes a great deal of patience and “travel smarts.” Most people go by tour and are bussed from sight to sight. There are advantages to this…you don’t have to worry about a thing. Your food is generally safe and transportation is taken care of. The drawback is you barely scratch the surfaces of the cultural richness of
these places….you don’t get to see the “real” Egypt. Walking the streets through the markets was probably our favorite experience. Visiting these countries is more than just their tourist sights…we feel so fortunate to walk away with a better sense of their lives and their country.
Thank you for coming along with us on our trip…we appreciate all the nice emails and comments. The adventures of Matt & Erin will continue…so stay tuned!
