I'm a little surprised to find that I'm uneasy (a bit frightened really). I feel all alone (family doesn't count) in a big, strange city where the residents don't speak our language. We have no food in the house. It's Shabbat, so the stores are closed. It's really disconcerting. I'm sure things will work out--I'll get more familiar as we stay here longer. But right now, 11 months sounds awfully long. (Didn't we say we'd have a harder time than Kate?) That said, Haifa really is a beautiful city. Very hilly--we're told no one bikes here. The apartment is large by the Jerusalem standards we're used to. We have a pleasant, grassy backyard with a southern exposure. On the flight over, we had an 11 hour layover, so we opted to leave Heathrow for a quick ... read more

We left Seattle on Thursday, September 6, at 6:40 pm. We arrived in Haifa on Saturday, September 8, at about 9 am. Here's the story of our trip... We had a long, but fun, trip here to Haifa, Israel. We were able to go see some of London. We rode the "tube" (=subway) into central London, walked all around and back to a little sandwich shop in Picadilly Circus, and then rode the tube back to the airport. We walked a little more than Zach wanted to, and we were carrying/rolling our carry-on bags with us (repacked as 4 for foot-travel), but we had a good time. We walked past Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Whitehall, the Thames river, the Eye over London (but didn't ride on it), several street ... read more

Today, I joined my Uncle Robert in the ranks of "participating in extreme sports that may or may not send my mother to an early grave." I went skydiving. And...I LOVED it. Now, I have to start this out by saying that skydiving has never really been on my list of "101 things to do before I die." My general theory has always been "Why would I ever voluntarily jump out of a perfectly good airplane?" It seemed to be tempting fate...laughing in the face of whatever physics god keeps planes in the air, with me safely in them. However, when the opportunity presented itself...well, I have never been one to say no to an extreme sport (except bungee jumping. I put my foot down on that one). My father's friend from 1st grade, and ... read more

that's it - tomorrow i'm finally flying. my first destination is kutz summercamp in warwick, ny, where i'll be spending the next 2 months. and as for later on - we'll see. during the last 2 months i have had (on and off) extremely annoying stomach aches, which may pose a big problem if i plan to travel for a long time and to distant places... so the plan is right now to enjoy my 2 months in the summer camp and to see how i feel in order to decide what's next. i have an open flight ticket for a year, so my trip can last anything from 2 months to a year... mmm apart from that, almost everything's cheked: i said goodbye to everybody (almost), bought and packed everything (almost), and for what i ... read more

If it was the sense of the exotic that tugged at my heartstrings through all these months in the Arab world - the crowded souqs, the pungent spices, the men kissing and holding hands and carrying on like a trailer for Spartacus - it’s the utterly familiar that gets me off to a good start here in Israel. There are young mothers in yoga pants and Crocs and men wearing baseball caps with Daytona Beach stitched across the front. There are kids debating the National League East standings on a park bench. There’s even a middle-aged dad tossing around the ol’ pigskin with his son on the sidewalk. It’s like I left Damascus and ran smack into the Jersey Turnpike, hitching a ride in the back of a Ford Taurus while some guy named Eddie ... read more

The trip from the border takes us through lush quilts of farmland and fields of bobbing sunflowers - the sorts of Edenesque flourishes that make the words “Promised Land” sound like more than just snazzy PR. We drive through tidy suburbs with orange-tiled roofs and leafy yards, little girls pedaling their bicycles down the street, plaits of hair swinging from their pastel-colored helmets. If there’s any sure-fire sign that I’m a long way from the rest of the Middle East, it’s the fact that it feels like I’ve dozed off and woken up in Poughkeepsie. There are terriers scampering down the street, late-model sedans in more than a few driveways. I’m half-expecting a Mr. Softee truck to come coasting down the avenue, playing a cheerful, off-key jingle while a gaggle of screeching kids follow. With ... read more

well i'm still in israel so i'm not really sure what i should write about so i'll try to include some background about me and my trip, and some updates about what's going on recently. first, a more detailed itinerary of my trip: 13/06/07 - arriving to camp kutz, a summer camp of the jewish reform movement (a teen leadership camp), in warwick, NY. i'm gonna stay there until 13/08/07, being a security guard (i'll have a little time off during that time so i'll probably be a little in NYC too). then, my plans were to be in the NYC-boston area for about a month and then to tour the east coast until florida, but then my parents decided that they're gonna join me for about 3 weeks during this time, and since they don't ... read more

Hi! I'm writing to you from my new apartment in Tel Aviv! We moved in a week ago, and I have to say that the apartment is great. It is in the absolute center of Tel Aviv, 5 minutes to the beach, the main shopping areas, all the buses, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars and grocery stores all within short walking distances. The kitchen and living room were just restored, so all the kitchen is brand new and theres a couch and tv and even a dvd player! It is really great. I"m sharing a room with the other american girl in my group, Erica, who I also happen to be working with (we spend lots of time together because of these 2 things). So, everyone has been asking me, what about work?! Well, here's ... read more

July 1, 2004. I'm living in Le Meridien Hotel in Haifa, www.lemeridien.com. I am housed in room 1354, a single bedroom suite fully furnished and the place is pretty comfortable already for me. I spend most of my time in the bedroom though, sleeping, being online, sleeping again, TV, and even eating. I rarely use my dinner table for eating. I have a really nice view of the mediterranean sea, and I'm living the life! I've always dreamed of living beside the sea and I'm living it right now. I swim at the beach anytime I want to, and there are 2 indoor pools in the hotel, plus a spa, gym, lounge and all the amenities. I am also tanner here, minamaya maya ko kasi kakaswimming dito but it's super fun pa rin! Hehe kahit nga ... read more

I know that it's been a while since I've written, but time moves so quickly that sometimes it is nearly impossible to sit down long enough to do so. Today is Tuesday, and I am flying out of Ben Gurion Airport on Saturday night. That means that I have four days left before I transition out of this year and into a new place. I am ready for the change. I am not happy to go, but I am ready to take with me what I have learned this year and keep it with me as I continue living and learning in new frameworks. These last few days are filled with last-minute assignments, exams, packing, and trying to find time to visit just a few more people and places. Every moment feels a bit hectic, and ... read more
