Amy may have been born more than 2 decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall but she got to experience some of the atmosphere from that time during our trip to north Cyprus. The island of Cyprus is split in two along the so called Green Line which divides the Turkish controlled north from the republic in the south. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) may not be recognised by any country other than Turkey but it has existed in one form or another for more than 40 years. For many years the border was closed but over time it has become easier to cross and there are now 7 crossings between the two sides of the island. We crossed at the quiet border crossing near Kato Pyrgos in the north west of the ... read more

Before landing at the Istanbul airport I had spent two action-packed years in the Mediterranean. While on the island of Cyprus, basking in the glory of the Mediterranean, I regularly alternate between the Christian Greek south side and the Muslim Turkish north side. I have developed a deep feeling of affinity for the Muslim people. Particularly for the young Persians from Iran who populate the Eastern Mediterranean University. Throughout my travels I have also formed bonds with many Roma people, whom I refer to as Gypsies. It is a label they say they cherish. This last point I checked with them very carefully. I had never intended to go to Cyprus. My travel plan was to stick to the co... read more

When I left Lorraine and Roxanne, I got on a bus headed for Lefkosia where I would cross over to The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. I was very curious to see what it was like and how it differed from the Greek side. I will start by saying I preferred the Turkish side! I only stayed three days on my own, but it was so lovely and I had many chances to use my very limited Turkish. I stayed at a beautiful hotel called The Ship Inn for 30 pounds a night. This was also a British package tour kind of place, but it wasn't really noticeable. My room was beautiful and clean with AC and a balcony overlooking the pool. It was easy to catch the dolmus (mini bus) into Kyrenia to see the ... read more

The 'border guards' on the Greek Cypriot side only ask what our nationality is and wave us through when we tell them. We leave the Republic of Cyprus and thus the European Union. The UN Buffer Zone is lined by some surprisingly well-maintained buildings, including a German-Cypriot Culture Club, and there are tri-lingual signs saying 'No Photography'. The Turkish Cypriot 'border guards' give us a form to fill in and check our passports. We get a stamp serving as our 90-day 'visa' for the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC), a de facto independent state recognized only by Turkey. We enter Lefkoşa, or North Nicosia. After a bit of confusion and disorientation, we manage to navigate to Kyrenia Gate, one of the entrances to the Old City (well, the Northern part of it), where I exchange ... read more

Dusty Roads It is strangely apt, I think, that Cyprus sits between the two continents of Europe and Asia- a Eurasian country with a Middle Eastern tag makes for a strategic, interesting placing. Reluctant indecision, is how I romanticise it. It's enclosed by the continents, shackled by the warming Mediterranean Sea, glared down at by the heat that moves only in that latitude. ... read more

WEDNESDAY 6 OCTOBER, 2010. Alarm set for 0615 hours. We needed to be up and back to Nicosia for 0800 hrs if we could. The Dome Hotel was obviously a very grand place in it’s day, but isn’t at it’s best just now. It has a Casino, which I would guess was pretty smart. Breakfast was from 0700 and we were down about that time. Pat had some cereal, I had some toast and coffee. While Pat was finishing breakfast I went to pay the bill, but my usual credit card wouldn't work. I used another which was OK, cost 193 YTL. Back to the room to collect our belongings. Then off. At the car park to the Hotel the gate was locked so I had to go back into the reception to get someone to ... read more

Fortunately for us another minibus driver saw me running and asked if he could help. I told him the situation and he rang up the mini bus driver and told me that in 5 minutes I would have my bag back. 20 minutes the bag had arrived, and I joined Ivan and dad for lunch. Girnea (Kyrenia) wasn’t super big - and it was definitely possible to walk most of the city centre. The old town was really nice. We found a place to stay and set off to have a walk around the city centre. We walked past the boats and to the castle and during a delicious dinner, where I had a prawn Caesar salad we debated about taking a car for the hire the next day. Note: As I couldn't locate my photos ... read more
