Ferrara, Italy
Ferrara, Italy Everyone has a bucket list of
European cities they want to visit and the list is pretty much the same regardless of where you’re coming from. However, besides, Rome, Paris and Venice, there are a few quite lovely European towns that everyone overlooks and that are worth the visit.
This list covers a few of those towns but have in mind they are hardly the only ones. Visiting a famous tourist city and talking to the locals is the best way to find more of these hidden gems.
Preveza, Greece
Preveza is
a city in the Epirus area but it gets overshadowed by more popular Greek cities. It’s set in the Gulf of Amvrakikos and it’s a perfect blend between a modern city and a town with a rich and long history you’re expecting to find in Greece.
Once you get bored of the promenade and the local beaches, take a trip and go rafting on the Acheron River. It’s the perfect way to refresh yourself on a hot and heavy summer day and it doesn’t involve nearly as many people as a day at the beach would.

Pretty much every small town in Italy has that magic that draws the
Trondheim, Norway
Trondheim, Norway tourists in, even if it’s not that famous or doesn’t have that many good hotels. It’s because living in such a small town gives you a better and more intimate sense of what the country is like.
If Ferrara is famous for anything, it’s for the ancient city walls that are the only thing left from a 13th-century palace. A local pasta recipe is nothing like anything you’ve tried elsewhere. It’s called cappellacci di zucca and it’s pumpkin-stuffed paste with sage and butter.
Clonakilty, Ireland
There are dozens of different Irish cities that could make it to this list but let’s stick with Clonatiky for now. The aesthetic of small cities in Ireland is a bit of old fashioned and retro-looking, and Clonakilty fits into it perfectly. Reliving this past fantasy doesn’t mean you should suffer by not using modern technology so make sure you have a special
Europe sim card on hand, and you’ll be able to make calls while you’re there.
The city has a lot of small pubs and small and narrow streets to wander through and get lost in while experiencing true Ireland.
Trondheim, Norway
A long time ago, during the Viking
Lucerne, Switzerland
Lucerne, Switzerland age, Trondheim was the capital of Norway but now it’s just a small town with a rich and interesting history. It’s located on the river Nidelva and it’s one of the most vibrant cities of northern Europe.
The most memorable sights are probably the Nidaros Cathedral that dominates the city and a wooden mansion that was a royal palace in the 17th century. Curiously enough, it’s a city that’s on the map of every experienced coffee lover because it has a well-developed coffee scene, too.
Ghent, Belgium
Belgium doesn’t have a very good reputation when it comes to tourism – it’s considered to be rather boring. This may be the case for the 3 most popular cities (Brussels, Antwerp and Bruges) but come to Ghent and you’ll be surprised. It’s an ancient city filled with 14th-century architecture, but also a college town with a constant influx of people.
The city gets a bit slower on the weekends and that’s the time you should use to explore and investigate the small and narrow streets. There’s also a great museum of contemporary art called SMAK.
Lucerne, Switzerland
In the end, when you have the chance, you should visit
Lucerne, Switzerland. It’s a city in central Switzerland, and it is on the most northern tip of the lake from which it gets its name. it’s a small and friendly town and you can explore it on foot without any guidance. It also has beautiful architecture and a nice art history museum.
When you’re choosing a restaurant to spend some quiet time in, make sure that it has a view of the river. The food will probably be great in either one.
There are many great small European towns to visit, which aren’t that famous and are often overlooked. It will be less expensive, but an overall great experience if you try.
