Vatican ... info to come! Lining up early in the morning to enter the Museum Vatican, we were more or less just congregating. I forget the time but it was early and we were ushered through to the group section and made out way into the Vatican gardens.... read more

So I played soccer today. I need some work. We took to bus to Saint John's Univeristy in western Rome and played some soccer for about 4 hours today. The kids from St. John's are all very nice, most of which are also pretty damn good at soccer. Us one the other hand (the six out of shape kids from Arkansas) were all pretty much getting kicked around, with the exception of Billy Quinn, the son of the humanities professor that is here this fall. We actually got a pretty intense pick up game going with a bunch of kids that just showed up to the court. Some of them were pretty good. I hope to go back a few more times and play again, but I don't know if we are going to have a ... read more

Am in Rome today and for the next three days. As it's saturday we had to get up really early to get in to see Vatican City. It was Amazing!!! I've never seen so much art in my life. The Sistine Chapel was even better than people said it would be. In fact, not to sound too mushy, but I almost cried at how awesome the frescos were. I was there for more than 6 hours. And San Pietro (saint peter's) is great Haven't had much sleep lately as I spent much of my time in Florence taking in the night life. I met a very cool guy named Sotir who showed me the entire city without the tourist flare. Florence was by far my favorite so far just because it was so relaxed in comparison ... read more

We had some free time after our hard day of sight seeing so Art and I retired for lunch out the front of the Pantheon… so very harsh!!! The food was excellent, views extraordinary and the Italian water gave us some cold lemon chello as a gift!! We like it here!! In front of one of the buildings down town there is a statue of a horse and it is 12m long. When it was completed the workers had a banquet inside the belly of the horse to prove how massive it was!! Rome, Italy, is the home of the Vesper… People of all shapes, sizes and ages ride them around, it’s insane!! People generally wear helmets but no other protective gear and they are completely insane the way they duck and weave through the traffic. ... read more

It was 8:30am or so when Katie, Sarah, and I found ourselves outside of the Vatican. There was a nearby free tour about to begin, but after realizing just how slow it would be, we quickly broke away. Apparantly, we beat the crowds through the whole experience because we went straight into St. Peters, and then the museum afterwards. The church was absolutely amazing. I was burning up, because I'd worn a halter top that day and had to cover my shoulders up in the heat with the sweater I had with me. It's considered disrespectful to show knees/shoulders in these places. Once inside, I was suprised at the different areas within that you could worship in, and there was also a communion being given while we were there. There were confession booths scattered about, each ... read more

Yesterday we drove into Rome, it is an amazing city, full of so muh history. It was a full on day. We left Florence early in the morning, got to Rome and due to a train strike had to walk 45 minutes to the Collossium. In 35° heat it was a killer. Then we went on a 1.5 hr walking tour around the Collossium and surrounds, so interesting! I just wish I knew more about it so I understood it all a bit better. Then we took another walking tour with our tour manager and some great sites. By the time we got to dinner we were buggered. Then we had another walk to get back to the bus and to our campsite, we crashed pretty early that night. Today we went to the Sistene Chappel ... read more

This morning we headed out to Vatican City. We arrived at St. Peter’s Basilica as it opened at 7 a.m. The piazza outside the Basilica is full of huge columns topped with statues of saints. The area was practically empty except for us, a old man singing (beautifully) to the saints, and a few pigeons. There was a line to get into the basilica, but it disappeared almost as soon as the gates opened, we lingered for a little while and enjoyed the empty piazza. When you enter the basilica, you’re entering another country, so you have to go through metal detectors, but that didn’t take long. We weren’t allowed to take our stroller into the church, so we had to check it downstairs. Entering St. Peter’s Basilica was the biggest wow moment we’ve had so ... read more

Today has been a mad scramble. I was planning to do the Vatican in half a day, so I got up early and was down to reception by 8. Unfortunately, checkout was slow (hence the reason for my wanting to checkout last night). Traffic wasn't ideal either, to put it lightly. Did I mention the Rome Metro system is the worst I've seen anywhere? In short, it was 9:30 by the time I got to Termini Station. After a 15 minute walk, fully loaded with by backpack, to the very inconveniently located left-luggage office (I wasn't about to wander around Rome with a large backpack), I discovered a horrendous line. I estimated at least an hour, so I got out of there immediately. Went to the hostel I stayed at my last visit to Rome (Casa ... read more

My wife and I set off on a Cruise Holiday on board the Ship ‘Sundream’ and we arrived at Civitavecchia - which is a port fairly close to Rome. Whilst others on the Cruise Holiday went by coach we decided to do the journey by train to reach Rome and take in the day that the late Pope John Paul was creating 32 (I think !) new Cardinals. Having alighted at the train station we made our way to St.Peters Square, an easy journey of just a few hundred yards. Only cost us some 13 Euros for the two of us, whilst the coach fare from the Cruise ship was 52 gbp each - a fantastic saving. Our plan was to go to St. Peters, see the ‘main event’ and then do all the other ... read more
