Our ship returned to the United Kingdom today, with a port call in the town which services Edinburgh Scotland. Unfortunately, this is another "tender port" because the actual piers are too shallow for our cruise ship. The one-way trip from ship to shore is about 20 minutes. Since it is kind of windy today, David watched from the Lido deck as the tenders bounced around quite a bit during their trip. Also there were waves of rain showers moving through the area all day. So we decided not to go to shore, even though this is our final port. Scotland has 5.4 million people - more than Norway, but much smaller in area. Edinburgh was originally founded as a town in the 7th century. The castle, which is the highlight of the town tours, was built ... read more

Today was shaping up to be a day of ancestral enlightenment for Greg, but first we are starting the day with coffee and Scottish Scones at Pete and Tracey's place. What a stellar way to start a day, great scones, coffee and company! Armstrong is my maternal lineage. We set off with a two fold plan to find the grave of Johnnie Armstrong and then go to his the Gilnockie Tower which is the last remaining part of his home. Johnnie had been the best known of the Reivers (England/Scottish Boarder families) who had a force of 3000 followers on horses. It is said he ran a protection racket from Gilnockie to the gates of Newcastle City 60 miles away. The King of Scotland liked to have Johnnie protecting the edges of the kingdom, but when ... read more

today we are spending the day with Elizabeth and after a quiet morning we head out to the nearby town of Melrose for lunch. We have a walk around the town looking at the derelict Melrose Abbey, the Priorwood Gardens, and a walk down the main street where we found url=https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=5de677f172bc5655JmltdHM9MTY4NzczNzYwMCZpZ3VpZD0xODQ5ZmRiYi04YjkzLTYxMmMtMzg0MC1lZDc1OGEwMzYwNzEmaW5zaWQ9NTIwOQ&ptn=3&hsh=3&fclid=1849fdbb-8b93-612c-3840-ed758a036071&psq=country+kitchen+deli+melrose&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZmFjZWJvb2suY29tL3Blb3BsZS9UaGUtQ291bnRyeS1LaXRjaGVuLURlbGktTWVscm9zZS8xMDAwNTc1ODAzMjQxMDIv&ntb=1the Country Kitchen Deli where we purchased cheeses and accompaniments for afternoon drinks. This morning we left Kilkenny for the drive back to Dublin to catch a flight to Scotland and goodbye to Ireland which has been a great week of exploring this wonderful country with such beautiful people. We arrived in scotland, picked up our bags and followed everyone else exiting with no customs checks. Welcome to Scotland. After the shitbox in Ireland, we decided to get SatNav and Automatic upgrades, so now we have a very nice B-Class Merc. We immediately left Edinburgh for Hawick and catching up with the Stanger Family. What an arrival in Hawick, it was so great to pick up our friendships with Elizabeth, Pete and Tracey, and Dave and Lyn. We also got to meet some of their kids who were not born first time we met in New Zealand for Midge ... read more

A decade ago I spent the second year of a three-year working holiday in Scotland. Having spent the first year in England my expectations when it came to the weather were low indeed, yet still I managed to be disappointed when the summer of 2011 brought just three sunny days with a temperature of over twenty degrees - two in the first week of June and another at the end of June. So as I finally headed back to Scotland to kick-start my adventurous northern summer of 2023, it was with a fair degree of trepidation - even more so once I decided to tackle the country's most famous multi-day walking trail - the West Highland Way - as a camping trip, staying in my tent rather than in the various hostels or B&Bs scattered along ... read more

Oh, we are having such easy pace days. With so many small villages along the roads less travelled to our destinations, we continually stop to explore which entails chatting to locals about all sorts of things, photographing the sites be they historical, current, funny, different or informative, having coffee and cake and wine(s) and food, walking the streets high and low, long and wide, hillside, beachside, streetside and even inside as locals can’t resist my charm! We spent time in the beautifully kept village of Dirleton because Marjorie Stewart, a very good friend of ours, spent her childhood there, as her father was the primary school principal. Jane phoned her from the village green. Berwick was another long stopover and a place we could have again spent a few extra days. Time, the bane of travelling. ... read more

A quick exit of Aberdeen and it was onto St Andrews. We parked between the wide, open, sandy beach, the beach on which the race scene of Chariots of Fire was filmed, and the famous St Andrews golf course. Within minutes our pre-arranged meeting with Anne, and her dog, eventuated. We made for the beach and headed in the direction of the famous clubhouse. Alongside the fairway of the 1st hole a photo was taken of us with the British and Australian flags above us. It just happened that they were flying beside each other. We walked, watched players who had paid 500BP for the ‘excitement’ of teeing-off and playing 18 holes at St Andrews. 500BP for a round was beyond our budget. We settled for wandering the streets, constantly chatting with Anne, and heading to ... read more

Shetland is ideal for anyone wanting remote. At a steady pace we went remote again today. Photographing, walking, conversing with locals, oowwwing and aahhing at scenery and the cute lambs were common occurrences throughout the day culminating with a seafood lunch with the trimmings at Dan Haaf in Scalloway. Scalloway was also the scene for meeting the crew of a mussel boat as we watched it dock, fully laden with 28 tonnes of mussels. Shetland produces over 75% of the UK’s mussel production. The Shetland visit wouldn’t be complete without Jane purchasing puffin memorabilia. She did. I settled for an ice-cream. For three whole days our visit on Shetland has been a thoroughly enjoyable, fun-filled learning experience. We’ve upgraded to a cabin with ensuite so should sleep overnight on the 12 hour ferry journey to Aberdeen ... read more

We have been blessed with the weather. It began overcast with intermittent showers, however by mid-morning the sun was our friend for the rest of the day. We headed to the north of Lerwick and were rewarded with stunning scenery which is not unusual for this part of the world. Esha Ness is home to Shetland’s volcano. Layer upon layer of volcanic ash and lava flows are exposed in the steep, rugged cliffs. The area is wild and beautiful. The stormy clouds over the sea added to the wildness. We walked the length and more of the ‘canyon’ taking particular care not to slip to the boulder and sea floor 70m below. Wherever we went in this Northmavine area we were constantly in sight of some marvel … sheep, black or white, with lambs grazing in ... read more

Due to the efficient disembarking, we were on the road heading for the 100m high cliffs of Sumburgh Head 45kms from Lerwick, the southernmost section of mainland Shetland, on which stands the lighthouse and the famous breeding cliffs for puffins and numerous other birds. Jane was as ‘happy-as-Larry’ upon seeing the puffins. She spent ages photographing them. The scenery here and around every corner that we have travelled so far is sensational and ranks amongst the best I have seen on my travels. As we worked our way along both coastlines (they are not far apart) back towards Lerwick we began to feel pretty ‘bombed out’. Even though the ferry was soundless and the journey smooth, trying to sleep in a pod does take some getting used to. We found our accommodation at about 2pm, slept ... read more
