Since returning to the UK after our 'big' trip we've been getting more and more restless - so, to keep our sanity and our spirit of adventure alive action was taken. After years of being my pillion Gill passed her unrestricted motorbike test, we went out and bought two motorbikes (a Suzuki Bandit 600 for me and a Kawasaki ER 5 - 500cc for Gill), and we used them! Two days after Gill passing her test we set out on a 1250 mile round trip through Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, the lakes, Scotland (up to the Isle of Skye) and back down. Camping all the way, it took 8 days and we had a excellent, incident free(except Gill dropping her bike once on gravel, and her bike breaking down on Skye) holiday. We'd recommend it! The following is copied and pasted from my journal, written as soon as I got back from Glenfinnan last week: Wednesday October 3, 2007 10:48pm I’m jotting this down quickly before I forget. Left Tuesday 4:50pm for Glasgow. Switched trains (had an hour and a half layover) and got up to Ft. William about 10:00 Tuesday night. Checked into MacBackpackers hostel (bought t-shirt!), went to Grog and Gruel pub, came back to sleep. Got up early, caught 8:30 train to Glenfinnan. Middle of nowhere, but walked down to monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie and Viaduct to take pics. (train on the way there went by Hogwarts Castle sign-bearing red steam train!!! Alas, no pic of this) Saw small camera crew and small security crew on banks of Loch Schiell, assumed documentary was being filmed. Asked. Found ... read more

We left Stirling Castle at around 6:00pm on the 7th of October, and we had a long drive (150 miles or so) to go to get to Inverness. To avoid the problems we had previously experienced of making calls to various B&Bs late in the afternoon as we drove along and then finding out the only places left were really expensive, we had decided to book a place to stay before we left Edinburgh. The place we chose was in a place called Nairn which was another 15 miles or so beyond Inverness. This meant that although we knew it was going to be late by the time we got there, we were not too concerned. We arrived at Inverness at around 8:00pm and decided we would look to for something to eat there first before ... read more

We are now in Scotland after a whirlwind few days in London. We visited a few old haunts and Pete reminisced about his time in London. He also spent a day with some friends (James and Colleen) and I spent the day with Tania. Our hotel was in an amazing location right in the middle of the West End. The hotel itself was nothing special but it was great as we could walk to Covent Garden, Leicester Square etc. We also did another walking tour there (we are addicted to them!) and it was great - really interesting even for Pete who had lived there before. We then flew to Edinburgh, collected our car and drove down to Culzean Castle on the south west coast. Wow!!!! It was absolutely amazing. We spent the night staying in ... read more

Waking up the morning after the scary night before we go down for breakfast and tuck in. Steve talks about how much he hurts (which makes a change) and we are soon off! What a start, the sky is blue, the sun is out and there is a light mist covering the mountains. After a few minutes we approach and start to drift down the long descend into Glen Coe Pass and 20minutes later we pull over to talk about the most amazing few miles of scenery we have witnessed (which when you think that Steve is 98 it must be quite something). Seriously it is a superb journey and was worth cycling the length of the country for just for that. Go visit. We spend the rest of the days cycling along many Lochs - ... read more

Well what a great couple of days we have had. Leaving Waterhouses on Thursday morning we had no wind at all, and a nice long downhill! It was very cold however and we find our toes freezing up on and of for the next few days. Making good progress we arrived in Macclesfield to find a place to have a coffee and on leaving we still hadn't - until we saw the golden arches and stopped for a coffee and bagel. I have NEVER ben happy to go into a McDonalds before this moment. Manchester was reached by 12pm and we navigated our way some how right through in no time, thanks largely to Gareth and his super direction skills. Following on from lunch we went through and even North of Preston (!) where we found ... read more

Ben Nevis Challenge The gauntlet of climbing the highest mountain the UK was laid down and a team of seven signed up; myself, Ashley Bowers, Phil Cartmell, Sam Thrower, Owen Bouwer Claire Nicholson and Kathryn Shackleton. Arriving on Friday 29th September we soon realised the extent of what we had let ourselves in for. I would describe the Nevis Range as the lake district on stilts. After a very cold night camping at Glen Nevis campsite we got our gear ready and set off at 8:30. We quickly realised that map reading skills were not needed as plenty of other climbers were tackling The Ben The first section nicknamed the Elevator took is toll quickly, this section was two hours of relentless stone steps. The teams spirits were kept high by my constant lying that the ... read more

Well! Day 2 commenced at 9:00. I'd slept well the night before at the hostel (no one snoring in the room this time!) so I was ready to go. It was a little chilly, but then it's usually a little chilly up here, so I didn't think anything of it. The bus stopped to gas up, and then we were off. Our first stop was at the river Sligachan. The story goes that if you dunk your face under the water, you'll become eternally beautiful and youthful...until you have a drink of whisky. We all dipped our faces under, even me. Surprisingly, it wasn't that cold! Of course, our bus full of beautiful people was undermined that afternoon by the bottle of punch passed around, but still. It was nice while it lasted. ;) We stopped ... read more

Sunday, we drove up to Fort William, which is a town in the highlands. Basically, we were sightseeing our way there. We stopped at Luss, on Loch Lomond and walked around the town, and onto the pier. Stopped at another castle, but as we were kind of castled-out, we didn’t go in. The highlands are really pretty. We stopped at Glencoe, and at the Glencoe Visitors Centre, where we saw a 5 minute movie on the Glencoe Massacre of the MacDonalds by the Campbells and English soldiers. In Fort William, we stayed at an old hotel that I thought smelled like a retirement home, or just really moldy. Mom thought it used to be an insane asylum, and went as far as asking a cabbie if it used to be used for anything before changing to ... read more

We made a second visit to the Island of Skye, visiting numerous main roads of the island travelling over the bridge as well as over the ferry from Glenelg, travelling to Kylerhea for a performance, visiting a farm for quail eggs, and veg, travelling through Broadford, Portree, up to Uig and then around to the Castle of Dunvegan gardens, through the Cullin Hills over very very narrow steep roads and then back to Dornie. What an adventurous wonderful trip of seeing many animals, the long haired Highland cattle, and sheep. We still had time to eat and have coffee, making many stops during the day arriving back at the house very late.... read more
