Another wonderful breakfast with Rupert and I hoofed it over to the train station once more, this time to pick up my rental car. The nice lady had left the chip in for the GPS, which honestly turned out to be for the best. It was much easier to use the car than my phone. My car for the next two days turned out to be a rather fancy VW Golf with all kinds of driver assistance features that were sometimes helpful and sometimes not. After some quick adjustments to the seat and mirrors I head out to explore Loch Ness. I think a lot of people come to this area due to the legend of a monster, but really, they should come for the scenery. I chose to go down the east side and back ... read more

Another gorgeous day, bright and sunny. After a quick breakfast we were off to drive aroundLock Ness. The trip was mostly a very scenic day and not much to blog about. Pictures are worth a thousand words. We did make a couple of stops: · Loch Ness Centre, the Nessie interpretive center. I very interesting look at the legend and science behind Nessie and the Loch itself. · Urquhart Castle, the site dates back to 500 AD, but the first castle was built in the 12th century. · Invermoriston Falls, on private land but open to visitors · Fort Augustus, city at the end of the Loch and on canals and lochs leading to the Loch. · Suidhe Viewpoint, highest point on the south side of the Loch. You know your in the highlands here. · ... read more

Loch Ness day. A drive around Loch Ness, punctuated by hot chocolates, several photo stops and a picnic by the lake. All good and some brief periods of sunshine made it quite an enjoyable excursion. Loch Ness is certainly more atmospheric in the mist and rain and it takes on a more foreboding and eerie nature and one significantly more conducive to Nessie spotting but it was good to see it with the sun shining. The north side is considerably more popular and populated than the south. On the north side tourist coaches and pubs are common whilst on the south side the road is one lane with those 'passing places' sprinkled along its length. They are some delightful little villages on both sides but on the south side there are no tourist souvenir shops at ... read more

We took a bus tour in Edinburgh to Lock Ness. On the way there the tour person shared alot of interesting history of the land. He even told us spots that we were passing that was used as locations in the 007 SkyFall movie and parts of Harry Potter. We didn't see Nessy. Does she or he exsist? Maybe you will see a glimpse of it in the pictures. Interesting fact though is Lock Ness is so deep and big that it hasn't been fully explored....just saying.... read more

If you really want to believe in the Loch Ness Monster, whatever you do, don't go to the Official Loch Ness Exhibition because they kill the myth before you even step in. You see people, the loch doesn't sustain enough marine life to feed one large animal, or so the signage says. You would think that as the mystery of the monster supported a healthy tourist industry and that millions of pounds and effort had been spent looking for it, that there would be some insinuation that something exists. We saw the beardy guy who spent much of his life searching for the elusive monster knocking around, but he obviously isn't bothered that every room in that place proves that his life has been a waste of time. However, the exhibition was interesting and gave a ... read more

After a run to the mouth of the river, with a fantastic view of the Beauly Firth, and breakfast, we set off to see Loch Ness. We stopped off for some views of the loch and then we headed to Urquhart Castle. It was a nightmare trying to find somewhere to park (despite the massive coach park that was completely empty). Before entering the castle, there is a video about the history of the castle. The early history is a story about fighting off those bloody English, which bought back memories of the history tour in Boston. Once the English had backed-off however it was a story of infighting between the various Scottish clans. This concluded with the guard tower of the castle being loaded with gunpowder and blown-up, and the castle being abandoned to fall ... read more

We don’t do guided bus tours. Who really wants to sit in the back of a bus with 3 kids through bouncy Scottish highland roads for 13 hours? But, we were inspired by a Scottish ancestor who lived in the Highlands and were determined to see the area. So the bus tour was an easy way to see the Highlands on a short stay in Edinburgh. On the tour, we drove through fields of purple heather and past huge lochs nestled in the mountains. It was fun to connect the sites we drove by with movies such as Brave Heart, Monty Python, and Harry Potter. The fog drifting over the hills helped us to imagine the fairies of the Scottish folktales we had studied. But the highlight was Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness. We were given ... read more

Today is the day and it is time for me to search for my White Whale (Nessie). Woke up early and packed a day pack for the long coach ride up north. I had booked my tour with a company called Rabbies. It is not an infectious disease company but I thought the name was kind of funny so I chose them. Price was reasonable, only $40 Canadian. The tour was in a 16 seat coach and we had 14 people on this tour. It was a nice mix of people from a pair of sisters from Florida to a nice lady from Italy. On the way up to Loch Ness our driver, Graham told us about Scottish history and we stopped frequently to take pictures and to take breaks. I will say Scotland reminds a ... read more

Said the guide as we left Inverness. The idea was that our children would be very proud to tell their friends we had been to the infamous Loch Ness, but having to admit that their parents had visited but not gone swimming, they would be ridiculed and shamed and everything else would be a downward spiral. Which was awkward because I hadn't packed a bathing suit. We stopped first at a spring called Munlochy Clootie Well. I have no idea what it means but it's a spot for an ancient sacred practice that has found its way into modern religion. The idea is that if someone is sick, you take a piece of his/her clothing (preferrably related to the area of the body that is ailing), dip it in this spring (bottom right), sprinkle the water ... read more

I took a bus tour today, which involved getting up way too early and driving (well being driven) 640km up to Loch Ness. The answer is no, I did not see the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie). I did however see many sheep, hairy coo (highland cows, including the famous Hamish, with his 'wife' Heather and their daughter Honey), Urquhart Castle, Larch trees and many rolling hills. Fran, our tour guide told us many interesting stories, such as how the Larch tree got introduced into Scotland. A Larch tree is a deciduous pine tree which was introduced to Scotland by a guy whoses name I don't remember. He had learned while in Venice that the tree's were more resistant to water and he thought 'great we should build ships out of this'. Unfortunately he died before the ... read more
