Words cannot describe how awesome this Isle is!!! On the way to the Isle we had a fantastic drive through the mountains, specifically the Five Sisters. We even had a chance to get some great pictures of deer, a buck and his doe. Passing into Skye we also got to see Eilean Donan castle which is just beautiful. We also got to see our first border collie while at the castle. After that , we pretty much saw them everywhere along the way. Once on Skye, we headed to Talisker Distillery. What great whisky!! The whole area was nice and peaty and you could smell the peat everywhere you went. That great peat smell is also what made the whisky taste so fantastic. From Talisker, we headed up to Dunvegan Castle. Unfortunately, it was undergoing some ... read more

Bonjour The Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The southern area of Skye is dominated by the Cuillin hills and believe me I would not describe them as hills! They just go up and up and disappear into the cloud and you just know there is lots more you can't see. Personally I found them quite foreboding this may have been influenced by the awful weather but they seemed to bear down on you and the area around them was barren and dark. We travelled up to Strethin to stay in the best hostel ever. Run by a lovely couple assisted by their gorgeous baby Donald who just smiled and smiled. The hostel was spotless, well cared for and equipped and we would definitely recommend a ... read more

Bonjour peeps We took the M82 from Kinlochleven to Fort William a very pleasant ride that faded into insignificance once we began following the A87 from Fort William to The Kyle of Lochalsh. Sheer breathtaking natural beauty is the only way I can describe it. I am attaching a lot of photos to this blog so that you can see for yourself. When you go to Scotland there are many ways to see the outstanding sights it has to offer. A couple of years ago we took the West Highland Railway otherwise known as the 'Iron Road to the Isles" and voted the worlds top railway journey in 2009. From the train you can take in views you cannot see when travelling by car. If you want to see the West Coast and let somebody else ... read more

The Isle of Skye -- September 9, 10, 11, 2009 To visit Scotland is also to visit the Highlands. Early on the 9th we set off with Highland Experience Tours, which included an excellent guide (who had lived in Montreal & Toronto for 5 years before returning to Scotland) and a small number of other travelers. First we journed through Rob Roy territory, passing Stirling Castle, which is one of the most photgraphed castles in Scotland. and up to the wild expanse of Rannoch Moor to Glencoe. We travlelled past Fort William (It was considered that whoever controlled Fort William controlled Scotland) and along "The Road to the Isles" and finally over the bridge to the Isle of Skye. The next day we travelled around the island taking in some fantastic scenery, the Cuillin Mountains, the ... read more

First of all my bus ride to Inverness was long and hot, it was 4 hours but the girl behind me with her feet in my back made it longer, and the bus being stuffy and hot made it even longer! Other than that though I loved he bus ride, the scenery up through the highlands was stunning. I could not stop staring out the window, well that was till I fell asleep for a bit. But truly the bus ride was awesome. I got to Inverness and found it to be what I expected a reasonably small town where there isn’t much to do or see, I went to the tourist information to book my tour to the Isle of Skye as that was the only reason I had gone to Inverness (Inverness is the ... read more

Isle of Skye to Ullapool Upon waking up on the Isle of Skye the next morning, the lovely lady at Oisgill House, our charming little B&B, made us breakfast and told us about a lighthouse not far from there that is a popular sightseeing point. Intrigued we asked her where it was and how to get there - we opted to drive, even though she said it was walkable. So after our breakfast we packed our stuff, rugged up nice and toasty warm (well, we were warm until we got outside!) and trudged to the car to pack up for another day. The drive from the B&B to the lighthouse wasn't far, but we were glad we didn't walk cause it was quite windy by the time we got there. It was incredible. Neist Lighthouse is ... read more

Today has dawned relatively fine overhead but with some low cloud on the higher hills of Skye which is to be todays sightseeing trip. Murdo had a full Scottish breakfast for us including the prized black pudding, which Gretchen shoveled over to my plate. As we have found when staying in B&B it is often difficult to get away and on the road when there are other interesting guests to talk to and today was no exception as we swapped stories with an American couple from Maine. There was also a couple from Austria who were a bit shy and less talkative.Amazingly they were doing their time in the Skye are on foot relying upon the buses to get them around to the sights they wanted to see. We all had a chuckle when Murdo in his jovial way ... read more

Isn't it odd how songs that you have heard and can remember some of the words come flooding back to you when you travel and visit places that are in a songs name or lyrics.Well we think so anyway as it happens to us all of the time.Songs like "Get your kicks on Route 66"(when we travelled that famous road in the USA),"24 hours from Tulsa"(a Gene Pitney hit about a US town in Oklahoma),Abilene(can't remember who sang it but the town wasn't much in Texas(?) and Luchenbach Texas(a song by Waylon Jennings,we never did find the town) and the list goes on. The singer of the title of of this blog was a Scot(of course)called Andy Stewart and he had a lot of hits back in the 60's(we guess it was then, showing our ages!!).He had ... read more

Today we are looping around the Isle of Skye. Headed northwest from our castle and travelled the winding roads. Many wonderfull road signs. Most have exlcamation marks and some form of picture. Common ones are school and children but my favourites are for sheep, deer, elderly and blind people. And when they show a sign for road narrowing they mean 1 lane and they mean it NOW! You had best be having your foot on the brake right away. Very majestic mountains that are strangely bare of trees. We noticed some clear cutting of forests as well when ever we did see some trees. Stopped for lunch in Portree. Poor Elke is ready to kill for a real salad. Salads here consist of some leafy greens and a tomato slice (no dressing - really only for ... read more
