Today we went to foffany dam car park. we had to work out where we were going, we had to as a team take a bearing from the compass. we followed a bearing off 111. and set off for the style that met the wall. we followed the track up to the style between slieve loughshannagh and ott mountain. we then walked to the summit of doan. then we stopped for lunch. then we walked down to lough shannagh. we then walked up the side of carn mountain back to the style, then followed the track back down towards the car park. new skills that i developed was 6 figure grid references. we were able to pin point were we needed to walk to on the map. the existing skills that i improved- i improved on ... read more

This was our first week as a group going up the Mourne Mountains. We walked the 'Trassy Track' to the bottom of 'Hare's Gap'. During the walk we practiced our compass and map reading skills, this was helpful as it had been a while since I last used these skills, and needed to go over the basics of it again. I also learnt how account for magnetic North by adding 7degrees to the map bearing. I feel I have developed patience when helping others to understand things, as in the past I have found myself to have a short amount of patience, as I usually feel that if someone wasn't listening, then it is their own problem that they don't know what to do. this was our first trip to the mournes as a group at the very start we where asked to pace 300 metre's at the start of the trassey track, this was to test whether or not we where payimg attention and if our pacing was correct or not, we where also asked to read the map and work out how far away several thing's where and to let us find out roughly where everything was around us. After reaching our first and second location we where asked to read the map find a bearing for a sheep fold find out how far away it was and follow the bearing. Today we went up to the mournes in our group. We decided to go up to Hare's gap. As a group we went up the trassy track. today i learnt how to take a magnetic bearing off a map and using a compass. We learnt as a group to always have the compass pointing on the map in the direction of which you are travelling. i learnt to look in the direction of travel from the bearing which you get from the map and chose a natural feature to walk towards.
