Saturday welcomed our much anticipated and much talked about house party. A night that would end weeks of crafty promotion to random individuals, mainly girls, that five random Australians, all teachers, had moved into their student encrusted town. Boy was the night one to remember… if only I could… These photos have helped to reminisce on the night that saw 60 or so warm our house… ... read more

The first thing I noticed about Leeds was the size of the buildings. Actually that’s the second thing I noticed. The first was that it was really fucking cold, and as usual, dressed in a thin suit jacket, I was woefully unprepared for these types of temperatures. (Oh the sacrifices we must make for fashion.) It was clear I was now in a big city. (I was surprised to find out later that Leeds has the second largest Metropolitan area in the country, making it the second largest city in the U.K, there’s one for the fact fans). Even so, even the buildings in London aren’t this tall. It seems that, whereas London likes to push all its massive tower blocks and tenements to the outskirts (or at least into the city) Leeds exposes itself at ... read more

What a night! As I sit at the computer, desperately trying to keep my eyelids workably ajar, I realise that regardless of my current state, Australia Day was given the celebration it deserved. Getting to the "Walkabout" was an effort and a half as none of us really knew exactly where we were going, and I think it fair to assume that we may also have been a little intoxicated at the time. A mechanical surf board tested our already flailing balance, and gave the crowd an opportunity to taunt anyone who took it for a ride. Azz appeared to do the best, but it was perhaps Pete’s inability to last longer than 3 seconds, or the showboating by Cossie and myself that was best received. I think it is best to spare the meticulous detail... ... read more

The relevance of this heading will become more apparent as you become in engrossed in this entry… “The Game” is a self-help book that a few of the boys have recently been engrossed by and obsessed with. It looks at the science of social dynamics and personal interaction (or, how blokes get laid!) Many of us are adamant the UK is the perfect place to prove or disprove the book as bible, or at the very worst have a lot of fun trying. One chapter of the book looks at the “Peacock Theory” which outlines the importance of getting noticed. So Jonesdog, Grovesy and I decided to invest in an ice-bath full of Beck’s Beer - funnily enough the first patrons ever to do so. This prompted a group of British beauties to almost immediately invite ... read more

Settling in at Langdale has been made relatively easy by Mr.Patell, our Indian landlord. Mr.P as we’ve dubbed him, also owns the local corner store, which conveniently has a liquor license. We are quickly becoming his best clients. He promises to bring around a curry and in return we will cook him a traditional Aussie barbeque. Our body clocks have now adjusted to the time difference, and bouncing out of bed at 4 or 5am is now not as much of a problem. The weather is still extremely cold, although the Dooner purchases, or Duvell’s as they are strangely called over here, provide ample warmth at night. With Grovesy and Jonesy arriving this week the house is now full and deemed as the ultimate bachelor pad, the envy of every fun-loving crim. The house itself is ... read more

Well it's just over a week until I set off and myself and young William have sat and after enjoying the start of Celeb BB (which we believe will be genius), drinking beers, delivered via a vist to the genuinely poorly Wheezy at Jimmy's, we have now set-up my blog. I now have the power to keep you informed of my antics. ... read more

On January 3rd 2006 my working year started, awfully premature when compared to every other teacher back downunder. However, no amount of preparation could have adequately readied me for my first day of teaching in the UK. I was told to arrive at what was called a Learning Centre with an open mind, but I had no idea just how open it was expected to be. I arrived at the school at 7:45am, no one was around and I could have been excused for thinking that Spring term didn’t commence for another day. It was pitch black and the only visible light had been smashed in. At a tick after 8, this plump bloke stumbled up the stairs, and in a strong pommy accent asked “Youalright?” To be honest, I didn’t know whether he was ... read more

The Good: New Years Eve in Leeds was an absolute blast. We met up with Bridie's friend from camp Rich who had three spare tickets to a night club called Creation - destiny really. So off we went, looking damn fine considering we all did our hair and makeup on a moving train. Primping, straightening, curling, colouring - we did it all. Everyone thought we were mad. All's I'm going to say is, Virgin trains, thanks for having powerpoints. After being given free drinks (yay), free hats, and english flags, the clock counted on down. At the strike of twelve we were dumped with confetti, sang Auld Lang Syne (very loud), waved our flags and generally had a giggle. Robbie Williams Angels was played and the entire floor sang it at the top of their voices ... read more
