We both remembered visiting Box hill in the past and decided to visit there on 2 June. We caught the train from Waterloo and reached Box Hill and Westhumble station round the lunch time. There were several young people who seemed to head for Box Hill from the station. We remembered houses and their gardens and pubs – nothing has been changed since the last time we were there. As we reached the main road, we walked under subway and found the footpath near Burgh Hotel. We climbed up the steep hill and steps for a little while. The footpath became less strenuous as we approached the summit level – and we were able to overlook Burgh Hotel, Flint Cottage known as George Meredith’s chalet, winery, lovely houses and magnificent mansions below. There were a lot ... read more

Excursion to Box Hill On the 1st day of our staycation, 11 May, we headed for Box Hill. We took the train from Victoria station. Having been away from Vauxhall for a few years, Mark doesn’t feel nostalgic about the time he used to commute to Vauxhall. However, when our train was running through the rail bridge and showing the skyscrapers around Vauxhall, he found something strange – his former office skyscraper, Market Towers, had disappeared. He told me that there will be an exclusive hotel replaced on the site of 1 Nime Elms Lane in the near future. Having travelled with the train in the lunch time, we took lunch on the train. We got off at Box Hill & Westhumble station. It was a long time ago we visited Box Hill. I couldn’t remember ... read more

I have an afternoon on my hands so I thought I would take the time to write up my travels from the last 6 months or so (that sounds like such a long time!). It may be a bit patchy but I have kept a fairly accurate journal of my time up until arriving in Kalgoorlie to work so should all be there. I'll start with the planning, packing and day if the flight, to reassure anyone who thinks they've left everything to the last minute. I finished packing as I walked out the door to catch the plane at Gatwick, not unusual but I did have a slight panic that morning when i work up on a friends sofa and praying that the buses where running on time! Having only booked my flights a few ... read more

Mrs Ronald Greville, s successful hostess, found a Regency country house northwest of Dorking at the beginning of the 20th century. The house was remodelled and rooms were refurbished in line with her lifestyle between 1906 and 1909. Visitors can look round the Hall, Drawing Room, Library, Reception, Study, and Tea Room. All rooms are furnished with mahogany and oak furniture, marble fireplace, elegant chandeliers, and mirrors and lights embellished with golden carvings. There are collections of blue-white featured china, ornaments, jade with the decorations of birds, dragons, rabbits, paintings of English farms and voyage and mythological paintings, tapestries of the 16th century Flemish paintings, and the 18th century silver pots and cake baskets, all of which were purchased and collected by Mrs Greville. Elegant showrooms make you feel like one of Mrs Greville’s house party ... read more

There were several places, e.g. Kew Gardens, Wisley Garden, Winkworth Arboretum, and Box Hill to view autumn coloured leaves in and around London. It was a long time since we had been to Box Hill, Surrey and we had decided to go there on 30 October 2010. We took the British Rail from Victoria, and got off at Boxhill and Westhumble Station. We both remembered the streets, subways, and routes to Box Hill. After going through the subway under the A24 Road, Burford Bridge Hotel appeared in front of us, and we started the trail behind the hotel. It was sunny and relatively mild when walking uphill. All of the trees and shrubs’ leaves had turned gold, orange, and yellow, and they were fallen on the ground. We looked back from time to time and enjoyed ... read more

After three and a half weeks in sunny South Africa we returned back to cold rainy England to complete our final big push. It was exciting once again, we were moving home and starting new jobs! This time we headed for the lush green country side, where we stayed in a 2 bedroomed cottage on my new boss' estate. It was gorgeous, up on Box Hill with awesome views of rolling hills on their land and no neighbours! Well, maybe a few kms down the road, but I don't think we would be bumping into them soon.. Jason was still working at Harrods in London and travelling almost 3 hours a day on train and underground. My journey was slightly quicker, about a minute's walk to the main house that I would be looking after and ... read more

After our long holiday in South Africa it was time to head back to the U.K and start working again..blah.. For the first 3 weeks we stayed by our friends Kate & James in their cottage on box Hill while we looked for new jobs. (little did we know that in a years' time we would be staying in the cottage next door working for the same family as Kate worked for!) After 3 weeks we started working at a 4 star Golf course hotel in Croydon, Le Meridian Selsdon Park Hotel, about 13 miles from London. We first stayed in their staff accomadation block, this was a little dodgy and we weren't happy sharing 1 shower and a toilet with about 15 other people..The staff came from all over, South Africa, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Spain, ... read more
