Put together a cheap flight, a few places to stay off the beaten track and some local ferries and what do you get? Five weeks island hopping in the warmth of the Caribbean sunshine. The flight will drop us into St Lucia - home for a week. Then we'll be using the local ferries to head north, first to Martinique then on to Dominica and Guadeloupe. Finally, we'll hop across to Antigua for a few days before heading homeward. In between we hope to explore all the variety that the Caribbean offers - snorkelling in the warm seas; walking up to boiling lakes and volcanoes; staying in apartments, villas, homestays and treehouses; shopping in the local markets and drinking rum punch. We plan to blog as we go along - more from the sunshine of St. ... read more

We couldn't afford the Orient Express to Istanbul and, anyway, we wanted to get off along the way and see things. So we came up with a route that takes us to a few places that we want to visit. On September 14th we are off on an odyssey of 12 train rides that will take three weeks, eventually reaching Istanbul. We start on the Eurostar and then whizz along on a 300 km/hour German ICE train. From Cologne, a Czech sleeper “the Phoenix”, will get us to Prague in time for breakfast. A few days there and we'll be off on another train or two to the Polish side of the High Tatra mountains where we plan to do some walking. We'll then cross the mountains and spend a few more days walking on the ... read more

I've been "home" in England for half a week now, enjoying some good food, although the weather as usual leaves a good deal to be desired...despite some sunshine, it has now gone back to form of grey skies and rain, which has left me longing for Zambian heat and sunshine! This will be my final entry, as I guess I am not travelling any longer (at least for now) & now have to find some paid work, fairly daunting seeing as most of the world's economy seems to have gone into meltdown in my absence! Still, I am certain that things will work out for the best. They usually do. My last week at SFH was pretty busy, considering all the bits of work I had to tidy up, people to say goodbye to & my ... read more

After breakfast it was raining. We were disinclined to stay in our hotel. If you ever go to Porlock, go to the Ship and not the Castle. The Ship is a fine Inn and it has Otter beer which is excellent, not to mention local. It also has a lack of Elvis impersonators and thumping cheesy disco till the early hours. Which is more than can be said for the Castle. Anyway, we took a stroll whilst deciding what to do and, very swiftly, I spotted an open top bus. We ran for it. It was going to.. Lynmouth. We got on and went upstairs where we became intimate with some wet trees. We went up onto Exmoor and when we seemed to have gone as up as possible we asked the bus to stop and ... read more

Today we got up and I had shower. The showers at the Sun have yet to be refurbished. It was fine but you push a button to get about ten seconds of shower, then you press the button again to continue. We got an excellent cooked breakfast and chatted to our fellow guests - the place has three roms so it is friendly - then we took 0ff. Stoped briefly in the Sanctuary near Avebury then again by Silbury Hill. We decided not to wander too far fro m the bike. This would have meant semi unpackig and carrying a load of gear. Instead we rode on through Devizes, down to Glastonbury which smells of hippies (unless a BPAL lorry just discharged its entire load. The tor could be seen from a long way off and ... read more
