Just when I was getting comfortable, I set off again for Europe, basically taking the same exact route as last time. Flight to Heathrow, train to London Paddington, train to Reading, train to Oxford. Landed at like 8:30 in the morning, and was in Oxford by noonish. Almost too easy, and really didn't have to think about much - moving around like a local almost. But, that horrible exhaustion set in with force in Oxford, where it really was the middle of the night to me, coming from the States. But I slogged through the day, setting up at Balliol College, in basically a giant room overlooking soccer, or football, fields. Nice place and comfortable. Today I gave my 20 minute or so talk to a group of like 20 people. Honestly, I'm very unsatisfied by ... read more

Hello again from London. Before we begin today’s descriptions, let us explain that there were no good photos from Kensington Palace because we could not use the flash inside. We got a couple outside pictures, but the ones inside weren’t very good – too dark. We got a better night’s sleep last night, but David still woke up for a couple of hours during the night. So we are still feeling a little remaining jet lag. We left a wake-up call and got started at 6:30 again this morning. Rather than have the hotel’s breakfast, we got ourselves packed and headed for the Underground. We caught “the tube” to Victoria Station (only 4 stops away on the District Line) – so it worked just fine. We needed to walk to the same Coach Station as the ... read more

It's a small world, after all .... It's a small world, after all..... It's a small, small world! Well, if you believe the disney song .... but, it's all a matter of perspective. Sometimes it's too big and other times tiny and insignifcant, and then there are times that you cross time zones in a couple of weeks and feels like something in between. The reverse culture shock, after arriving in London made me laugh. All of a sudden seeing all of these "foreigners" in one space in all their different shapes and sizes. But, within an hour of arriving, familarity kicked in, and after an evening of spritzers with sally jones, by the time I arrived in Oxford, I was struggling to remember that I actually live in Malaysia. It took me an evening, and ... read more

Arriving at London Heathrow we attempted to declare Tim’s beef jerky only to find no one at the desk, walking towards arrivals we were stopped by a lady... “You are not allowed to bring meat products into the UK” She said in a loud voice. Looking quickly over her shoulders she added quietly “Okay…go through quickly then…” Mum, Dad and Sam were waiting at arrivals - they were very excited to see us and informed us all about the two-week heat wave that they had experienced. After a quick drive arriving back home we discovered that the lock from Tim’s bag was missing. Opening his bag we saw that it had been riffled. Lucky nothing had been taken as all our valuables were in hand luggage. At the bottom of the bag under his clothes was ... read more

18th JuneHi guysWe had the best time before we left London. We went to the Queens horse guard show at which ........wait for it.........the Queen was at. Chris and liz managed to secure the best seats so we were quite close to her. I am sure she gave us a thumbs up sign coz she was so glad we were there. Bath was so amazing, so historic and so interesting. After travelling through the beautiful countryside from historic Bath we arrived at Bristol. When we got there we literally bumped into two friends from Australia associated with our church whilst in the Broadmead shopping centre toilet in the middle of Bristol. We had popped in just for a look and there they were.......really freaky, then on arrival at our hotel we discovered that we had another ... read more

7 locks, 120 in total. A lot of boats going in the opposite direction to us today which made all the locks easier – there would be up to 6 boats moored uphill waiting for the lock and we would breeze into the empty lock as soon as someone came out. Roles will be reversed at other times so we just enjoy our turn. A little bit of adrenalin was needed when a 'moored' boat started to swing across the canal just as I was about to go past it - makes you long for brakes sometimes. First thing we motored into Banbury town centre. There is now a huge shopping mall by the canal, good design but detrimental to all the other shops, many of which are looking a little run down. The old High ... read more

4 locks, 113 in total. A cold dull morning until the sun broke through about lunchtime, by which time we were moored on the outskirts of Banbury, a couple of hundred yards from Morrison's and about ¼ mile from the laundrette. We had motored to the background drone of the M40 and went under it twice. We stopped at Haddon's Farm shop – real diversification here with the shop, free-range pigs, camping facilities and also a set of moorings with water and electric hookups. We also made two children and their parents very happy by inviting them on board as we motored into a lock and then they were raised up. It was a win/win situation – they were really happy to be part of it all and we didn't have to close the lock gate ... read more

4 locks, total 106 Wide countryside views interspersed with wooded sections today. The Cherwell followed us fairly closely and sometimes joined us. Enslow Bridge private moorings seems to have attracted all the old, run down narrowboats on the Oxford – strange place. Even stranger though was what I can only assume was a shore-based commune opposite to the towpath – the odd caravan, largish marquees with one side open to the canal and fitted out with upholstered sofas etc. plus a camp kitchen in the middle of all this with several hobs and barbecues. Food shops are as scarce as on the Kennet & Avon but there is a tiny shop in the boatyard at Lower Heyford where we can get some milk tomorrow. Our fresh storage is very limited so we try to only shop ... read more

4 locks, total 102. A very different day's cruising in that many of the little mishaps that could happen actually did. Single-handed on the boat when I realised I had put the kettle on – the whistling grew in intensity and all I could do was go past all the moored boats to the lift bridge mooring when.... Fouled propeller number 1 – piece of an industrial quality fertiliser bag. Loss of steerage and power slowed me down considerably. A little later - fouled prop number 2 – fishing line. Jammed lock gate – couldn't completely open it and as these are narrow locks there just isn't room to manoeuvre round it. Had to call for help after we'd failed to whoosh through the obstruction. The Waterways chap came with 20 minutes of my phone call, ... read more

Mooring here evokes memories of Thomas the Tank Engine– the sidings are just the other side of some trees and Castle Mill stream and every evening trains are shunted into the sidings over a couple of hours or so and next morning at 6am they're all moved out again! It's not a problem, more of a time warp really. And of course St. Barnabus' chimes all the hours and quarters but not between 10pm and 7am, so that's good. I had to sweep detritus off the boat this morning – the perils of mooring under trees which, off course, hampered any painting today. So I lifted the stern boards and cleaned out a winter's accumulation of gunge from the gullies. It was market day in Oxford and it was really good – bought the sandpaper and ... read more
