Mooring here evokes memories of Thomas the Tank Engine– the sidings are just the other side of some trees and Castle Mill stream and every evening trains are shunted into the sidings over a couple of hours or so and next morning at 6am they're all moved out again! It's not a problem, more of a time warp really. And of course St. Barnabus' chimes all the hours and quarters but not between 10pm and 7am, so that's good. I had to sweep detritus off the boat this morning – the perils of mooring under trees which, off course, hampered any painting today. So I lifted the stern boards and cleaned out a winter's accumulation of gunge from the gullies. It was market day in Oxford and it was really good – bought the sandpaper and ... read more

Similar day to yesterday, starting with a walk to Port Meadow, a large water meadow by the Thames but accessible from the Oxford Canal. This is a wild water swimming area – not rough water but more fresh water swimming. I think that I would want a shower afterwards though – there's a lot of goose poo around. Port Meadow is managed by Oxford City Council whereas I believe all the other meadows around Oxford are owned by various colleges. Started on the undercoat today and the boat was so hot that the paint was going tacky on contact. Put another coat on this afternoon and will have the joy of sanding tomorrow. I decided to walk around the Jericho area of Oxford this afternoon – famous from Morse/Lewis and also Jude, the Obscure. Jericho was ... read more

Leaving England; Saturday, this day is about getting myself from London to an inn located in Horley, a small town 5 minutes from Gatwick airport. I took a cab from the hotel to Victoria station, a main hub, so a very busy place, you want to make sure you are queing (waiting in line)for the right tickets, you would hate to be in the tube que if you want train tickets. Lucky for me my cab driver directed me, it pays to tip. It's a nice relaxing ride to Horley and the inn was just a ten minute walk from the train station but when you have a lot of luggage a cab is necessary. Horley is likely the size of Palmerston, so not too big, be prepared to wait a few minutes for the cab. ... read more

I thought I'd better attack some of the rust this morning, after John had left and Hattie had been walked – big mistake as by the time I got into the Tourist Information office I was just too late to join a 'Morse' walk. Still, I did sand, kurust and red oxide a reasonable amount whilst the sun was still on the boat so all not was lost. I walked round part of Oxford in the afternoon. I didn't visit the colleges as such but just snapped some of the architecture that I liked. I visited Christchurch College a few years ago and did the 'Harry Potter' bit then. Someone has just tapped on the window as I am typing and I suddenly felt vulnerable – a fisherman who'd got sunburnt and had I got any ... read more

4 locks, 98 in total. We were punished for mooring illegally on Sandford Lock moorings – Saturday evening is disco boat time! Huge boats going to and fro through the lock, music blaring, etc. Perhaps we should have stayed for the concert at Abingdon after all. Mind you, a slice of Clair's delicious homemade lemon cake made everything ok again – thank you Clair. As we neared Oxford today we passed loads of large boathouses for the rowing fraternity, who were out in force for a Sunday practice. Sculls go faster than us and have right of way – how unfair is that!! Suddenly we were in Oxford, the downstream flow abated somewhat and we were able to see and enjoy our surroundings once more. The Oxford Canal is entered from the Thames via Sheepwash Channel ... read more

3 locks, total 94 PS to yesterday's blog: Day's Lock hosts the World 'Poohsticks' Championships every March Since the confluence with the R. Thame, some sources state that we are now on the Isis, rather than the Thames. The dykes mentioned are named The Dyke Hills. An alfresco meal on the stern of the boat and a superb sunset last night. We set off very early this morning in bright sunshine after a last minute arrangement to meet Matthew, Clair and Naomi in Abingdon by 11.00am. This meant going through the first lock before the lock keeper started work and this is very straightforward.......provided all the lock electrics are functioning properly. They weren't, so we lost 45 minutes and really had to steam after that. We were determined not to miss the toilet pumpout at Abingdon ... read more

Day 8 – Oxford Our month long road trip began today. Yippee! We headed back to Heathrow to collect our hire car. A very nice one too. So modern that mum and I sat in the car for 5 mins before we could work out how to turn the park brake off so we could actually move forward. Hehe! I’ve been doing all the driving so far but with the in-built sat nav I’ve not had a problem finding my way. There are a few strange road rules but I think I got away with it. I’m dreading finding a ‘magic roundabout’ though. Seriously… google a picture of one. The conversation in the car is interesting. This is what mum might say within a 1 minute period ‘30, it’s 30, camera, camera coming up, ... read more

There are two types of holidays. Those where you visit people, and those where you visit places. Right from the beginning we knew this was going to be a people visiting holiday, with a wedding to attend and JB returning home for the first time in three years. But with the wedding set in such a beautiful location in Oxfordshire, I now wish we’d built a bit more exploration time into our visit. Obviously we saw a bit of the countryside when we were driving around lost, and got to enjoy our cute little B&B just outside of Abingdon, but in the end we didn’t get to see Abingdon itself besides driving through it on the way to other things. The wedding was held in the Earth Trust Barn in Little Wittenham; a really lovely place ... read more

Staying positive and enjoying every second of your trip can become extremely difficult when you’re driving around the English countryside minus a GPS, with smudgy, black and white photocopied map, some vague Google directions and no frikkin street signs. We arrived in London early on Thursday. The flight from Bangkok was great – we both slept at least 8 hours and were bursting with energy when we landed. Given we arrived so early at the hotel I’d expected us to be wandering around in old plane clothes waiting for a room to be free, but we were able to check in straight away and shower – it was the best thing on the planet. Things were going perfectly. Once we freshened up we decided to head out. The weather was surprisingly warm and not a cloud ... read more

They say that heaven is an English day in springtime. If that's true, spring for us began on May 1st biking over the rolling Lanbourn downs, home to English horse lovers for thousands of years at least since prehistoric people carved horses into the chalk soil by removing the overlying soil. The oldest of the white clay white horses is so big that the best place to view it is from the air. As we cycle through the Vale of the White Horse on our way to Oxford we encounter riders, trainers and horses of varied hues and sizes. The skies are blue, the hills are gentle and our smiles are everpresent. As we roll into the city it doesn't take long before another version of heaven engulfs us. Oh to be student in this bastion ... read more
