A second day of exploring the city of oxford today. We decided to go back to some of the places we saw on the walking tour, and perhaps go inside if we were able. Christ Church is closest to our hotel so we started there. We did a self guided tour of the college. It is big, and I think pretty wealthy! They wanted to use the dining room to shoot the Harry Potter films, but the college didn’t feel they could feed their students elsewhere, and it was also not wide enough for four tables across (there are three rows of tables across the hall at present), so Warner brothers made a copy of the hall in their studios instead. Some of the shooting was done in the college though. The staircase was one area ... read more

We started our exploring with a town walk. The walk was billed as a free walk, and was run by the same company as our walk in Cambridge. The company was set up by students, who ask you to join the walk and if you would like to give them a gratuity at the end, they will accept whatever you give. You are asked to pay what you think they are worth. Our tour guide was Jamie, and he was very entertaining! He had graduated a few years ago, and so knew Oxford well. He guided us around the sights, giving both history and geographic information. With the information from the walk we were able to decide where to go back to look in more detail. We saw a number of the oldest colleges - Balliol, ... read more

Moving on to Oxford today, we decided that we would spend the day at Bletchley Park, as it was close to Oxford. We knew that because it is the weekend that many people would be out and about, and the other place we really want to visit, Blenheim Palace, would be better after the weekend. Bletchley Park was a secret base during WWII. It decoded messages, troup movements and orders from the German enigma machines. We arrived about 11.30 after a two hour drive through some lovely autumn colours. It has taken until the last week or so for the trees to really change into the autumn colours. We began with an introductory short film, then picked up our audio guides and started to wander around the property. To keep the work really secret, the team ... read more

So Dom and I have arrived in Witney our next stop with the lovely Peter and Margaret. What a journey so far..... The conference finished yesterday, was so fabulous, heard so much great stuff, got a little damp/rained on in the process and the "rain mac" I had with me proved to be un-waterproofed! Not so lovely ?. We did all sorts and met so many amazing people, some we've met before and so many new ones too. I met a beautiful lady there who is going through treatment for brain tumors, she wasn't diagnosed long ago so it was so good to meet her and we will stay in touch. She touched my heart, so she gave me so much. Her smile and love shone through her troubles, beautiful. And last night I got to ... read more

The drive up to Chipping Norton campsite was fairly uneventful, though the sat nav originally wanted me to go via Oxford, which would add 20 miles, but as I couldn't see the point of the extra mileage, I opted for the direct route. As Swindon was the half way point, I asked the sat nav to find a Tesco for food and fuel, but rather than send me to a supermarket, it took me to a tiny Tesco metro! The site is fairly quiet, and I was given full reign to choose my spot, but as the weather was so cloudy I couldn't see where the sun was, and I didn't trust my iPhone compass, so parked it along a hedge. It wasn't till the next day I realised I was pointing the wrong way round,( ... read more

Day 2 started off really early for me. I woke up around 6am from my "Privileged Room". No joke, my luck this trip was amazing. Andrew and I had lucked out and got an upgraded room that was way too fancy for two college students, but I was not complaining. I decided to do some exploring. It was nice to see the Oxford streets so empty. The masses of people often time detracted my view from the beauty of the city. I had grabbed an English breakfast, which I later found was not authentic after further exploring. Then I went to go get a haircut. The barber unfortunately was not able to cut my hair, but I appreciated his honesty. For Lunch we went to a place called Nandos. I was honestly disappointed by the meal ... read more

The last time I had been in a plane was in Richmond airport back in 2012 with my parents and sister; we were coming back from Orlando, Florida after spending a week in Disney World. And now, here I am, sitting aboard a British Airways double decker plane, casually sipping on Heineken and Red Wine, sitting beside some of the best friends a person could ask for, and geeking out to J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beast movie as I head to England. The trip started off on a positive before we even landed, in fact, before we left Heathrow Airport I knew luck was on my side. More on that later, but I must first mention about how efficient and frankly easy the check in process was for getting into England. I had very little memory of ... read more

Today, Tuesday 24th January, is my last day in England. Ben is back at work and Florence is in nursery school, so Petra and I are packing up Sam and heading to Oxford for the day. Ben dropped us at the Bristol Railway Station on his way to work for our 90 minute trip. Thankfully, it was a bright, sunny, but very cold day. We had no real plans except for a two hour walking tour of Oxford University, starting at 2.00pm. Oxford, one of the world's best known university cities, is called 'The City of Dreaming Spires'. It's home to 38 colleges and the prestigious Oxford University, all of which are positioned around the medieval town centre. It has been home to royalty and scholars for the past 800 years, though people have been known ... read more

Geo: 51.8688, -1.3786We came to Woodstock, on the edge of the Cotswolds, to see Blenheim Palace. Breakfast was "the full English" to the delight of the children, and we were off to the Palace early...too early, we realized at 9am, because the Palace didn't open till 10.30am (we were welcome to wander around the 2000 acres of Parkland - but it was -6 degrees, so although sunny, that had little appeal. We were lucky to see a sign pointing to the grave of Winston Churchill as we left the grounds for a drive - and had read about it in Notes From A Small Island. Just lovely - a peaceful parish church, where the last few generations of the Spencer Churchill family are buried (that's the family name of the Dukes of Marlborough). A real little ... read more
