Just under 2hrs drive before we arrived at The White Hart hotel in Dorchester-on-Thames. Our home for the next 2 nights. We knew check-in was not until 2pm so we enjoyed a light lunch in the bar area watching all the passers by who were visiting the flower festival just a few hundred yards away & where we would be heading in the afternoon. I took a stroll along the high street, so many pretty doors ( I do like doors). It was soon time to visit the Abbey, the main reason for our visit. It was 2pm and we were shown to our room, well more like a suite really on 2 levels with beamed ceilings & a lounge area, a lovely surprise that's for sure. The theme of the Flower Festival was 'Footsteps - ... read more

Every trip we've made has taught us something new, what we need to do or what we shouldn't do, what we should have or what we don't need. The last trip had us thinking we've just about got it cracked, but then a power shortage became apparent. The batteries last pretty well, but on this trip we had watched a bit of telly, charged phones, and had lights on and music playing, generally having a ball. Problem was we’d been away from hook up and not actually driven for any great time therefore apart from ten minutes in the morning when we ran the Genny to make breakfast and a coffee, there had been nothing to top up the batteries. This was just the scenario we would face on a trip around Europe so we knew ... read more

Friday 22/6/18 After lots of driving around Oxfordshire and surrounding counties we had a walking day today. We tried following a described walk across the fields around Stretton on Fosse. I suspect the descriptions now are meant to be followed with a walking app on your smart phone, but we only have Alison’s phone with a local sim card with data and using it with sat nav drains the battery too quickly to be useful. Public footpaths that cross over farmland are sometimes well marked and sometimes not. The less travelled paths we tried this morning had some drawbacks. For instance one crop field with the farmer spraying deterred us a little but then we came to another where the footpath markings directed us straight across a young wheat crop at which we baulked and returned ... read more

Today was a rest day, well at least from any walking! Vaughan was foot sore from yesterday's long walk. I had some printing to do so we went to Lisa's late morning and borrowed her printer, she was in the garden mowing the lawn. She said she would finish her chores then she would pop over in the early afternoon. We headed back to Matilda and found we had new neighbours to our right hand side, the crazy guy with the tent who was next to us had shifted to the end site. I was a little mifft when I saw the neighbours as their car was parked too close leaving us hardly any gap for our table and chairs, I had to say something. I asked them if they could move their car to the ... read more

Wednesday 20/6/18 Today was a family history day and, for my sins, we drove around a series of small hamlets and outer suburbs of Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. Fossicking around churches grand and tiny. The honey coloured limestone and slate roofs are ubiquitous with the occasional thatched roof. Evenly, Daventry, Great Boughton and Middleton Chaney were our particular destinations. The steak and stilton pie from yesterdays market was really good. I am a lover of pies but even SHE, who sneers at pies, was impressed. Thursday. We had tickets for a RSC production at Stratford upon Avon and today was the day. Stratford is less than a half hour drive north of our cottage at Stretton on Fosse. It seems to me that during the summer tourist season the theatre and opera companies only program the ... read more

Vaughan fancied doing a long walk and the Thames path was right on our doorstep. He chose a loop walk which would take in a few of the surrounding villages along the Thames, a total of around 15 miles! That was way too long for me, I had a strained calf muscle from running so would only walk as far as I could as it was sore. We set off along the path towards Shillingford, the path along the river was very picturesque, Shillingford was only about 2 kilometres up the the river. We continued to walk along the river until we we approached Dorchester and then our path took us inland where a heard of cows was crowded around the gate we needed to get through. A lady came towards us walking her dog and ... read more

For the past couple of months or more I have been suffering from a sensitive tooth, to the point that anything I drink that is hot or cold just hurts so I needed to get it sorted. I had managed to book myself into the dentist in Wallingford for an emergency appointment. Vaughan had his new glasses to pick up from specsavers in Didcot so today was an errand day. Usually we drive ourselves but given we had a now larger vehicle and parking in these towns with small streets can be a pain it was easier to take the local bus. Lucky for us the stop was right outside the marina. The ride to Wallingford was less than 10 minutes, I went to the dentist and Vaughan had to catch another bus to Didcot. I ... read more

Monday 18 June. We picked up a car today after taking the tube back to Heathrow. It is a Citroen C3, bright orange with a white roof and black stripes so we should be able to find it in the carparks. Great little car to drive. It was rather nerve racking getting out of the airport, but I settled down fairly quickly. There are slight differences in the give way rules here, as I quickly discovered, and signs and traffic lights are not quite where I expect them to be, but at least they mostly drive on the correct side of the road. We are staying at Stretton on Fosse, in the Cotswolds, about 1 hr out of Oxford. A residential village with just a pub (The Plough), a church and a post office. The Fosse ... read more

A little over a week after getting back from Munich, I had a visitor come to London for the weekend on their way home back to Australia. Again, a bit of a surprise having Michael come visit whilst I’m over here, definitely unexpected but it was really good to have him here. I enjoyed showing him around this city that I currently call home and hope that he also enjoyed his stay here. Leading up to the weekend, Michael had expressed his interest in doing a day trip outside of London and so we decided on heading to Oxford for the day. As much as I love London, it’s also really nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city every now and then, and I’d been planning to go out to Oxford ... read more

A second day of exploring the city of oxford today. We decided to go back to some of the places we saw on the walking tour, and perhaps go inside if we were able. Christ Church is closest to our hotel so we started there. We did a self guided tour of the college. It is big, and I think pretty wealthy! They wanted to use the dining room to shoot the Harry Potter films, but the college didn’t feel they could feed their students elsewhere, and it was also not wide enough for four tables across (there are three rows of tables across the hall at present), so Warner brothers made a copy of the hall in their studios instead. Some of the shooting was done in the college though. The staircase was one area ... read more
