10 September 2019, Tuesday Abingdon to Wallingford day 10 on Thames Path, day 24 of travel. One misty, moisty morning When foggy was the weather We met with old friends Not dressed up in leather With apologies to this old nursery rhyme, we do join together for our morning walk. It is a very misty morning as we leave Cosenar's House for our 'daily constitution.' At Abington lock there is a demonstration of how the old wooden weir system worked on the locks. This we attempted to describe earlier when we talked to Steven, the lock keeper at Northmoor. The upper and lower weir paddles are shown and the bottom supports in the river bed. It takes a person in excellent shape to handle this system. The display, almost like an outdoor sculpture, was a tribute ... read more

Today was a rest day, well at least from any walking! Vaughan was foot sore from yesterday's long walk. I had some printing to do so we went to Lisa's late morning and borrowed her printer, she was in the garden mowing the lawn. She said she would finish her chores then she would pop over in the early afternoon. We headed back to Matilda and found we had new neighbours to our right hand side, the crazy guy with the tent who was next to us had shifted to the end site. I was a little mifft when I saw the neighbours as their car was parked too close leaving us hardly any gap for our table and chairs, I had to say something. I asked them if they could move their car to the ... read more

Vaughan fancied doing a long walk and the Thames path was right on our doorstep. He chose a loop walk which would take in a few of the surrounding villages along the Thames, a total of around 15 miles! That was way too long for me, I had a strained calf muscle from running so would only walk as far as I could as it was sore. We set off along the path towards Shillingford, the path along the river was very picturesque, Shillingford was only about 2 kilometres up the the river. We continued to walk along the river until we we approached Dorchester and then our path took us inland where a heard of cows was crowded around the gate we needed to get through. A lady came towards us walking her dog and ... read more

For the past couple of months or more I have been suffering from a sensitive tooth, to the point that anything I drink that is hot or cold just hurts so I needed to get it sorted. I had managed to book myself into the dentist in Wallingford for an emergency appointment. Vaughan had his new glasses to pick up from specsavers in Didcot so today was an errand day. Usually we drive ourselves but given we had a now larger vehicle and parking in these towns with small streets can be a pain it was easier to take the local bus. Lucky for us the stop was right outside the marina. The ride to Wallingford was less than 10 minutes, I went to the dentist and Vaughan had to catch another bus to Didcot. I ... read more

Well today is our last day on the Thames and it has been a fantastic trip. Tomorrow we head off to Spain for about 15 days. So the last of the north of England. After leaving the Hadrians wall area we traveled down to Lancaster dropping into Lakes Windermere and Grasmere to have a look and drive around, which wetted my appetite to see more. Diane and Viv went in search of Beatrix Potter and her picture story animals. They found the World of Beatrix Potter and spent some time discovering the world that she lived in. She certainly made an impact on the world. They loved their visit. The next day Di and I returned to Kendal see a bit more and to visit a museum where I had found out there was an area ... read more

Well, the first entry outside of OZ. The Shane Summary: We went to the airport, booked in, got on a plane. Arrived in Bangkok & stayed for 2 nights. Went to another airport, booked in & flew to London. Toured around England. Had lots of help from family & friends to see us off from Melbourne, which was great. All went smoothly and Thai Airlines were great, made sure we boarded first so things were easier for Dot. The few days in Bangkok were great fun. The Siam@Siam Hotel was excellent & being right in the middle of Bangkok made it easier to get around. Bangkok was great & a lot cleaner (air & streets) than we imagined. Then locals are among the most friendly & easy going people we’ve met. If Bangkok is indicative of ... read more
