You really can’t visit Norfolk without stopping off for a trip on the Broads. Actually you can because I lived in Norfolk for 3 years at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and never visited the Broads at all in all that time. Only 20 miles from our campsite to Wroxham so went straight there. Picked up a traffic jam into the town which didn’t surprise as Norfolk is busy. Apparently far busier than normal because most people are staying in England for their holidays this year again and not jetting off to hotter more exotic places. As Europe is currently experiencing exceptionally hot temperatures feeling quite pleased really we have stayed put. We drove past the busy car park on the right before the bridge and were pleased about that later as the carpark ... read more

It's Tim Birthday - the big 30! We decided not to let this pass unmarked so we headed off to the Norfolk Broads for the weekend. Considering they are only an hour and a half from Cambridge we don't know why we have never been there before. Vicki and Jo came with us and we hired a 28' cruiser. It was very cool. We weren't too sure what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. Georgie B (the boat) was fairly spacious and we had a double cabin, kitchen, bathroom and a sitting area with a sofa bed. The whole roof of the living area slid back so we could enjoy the nice weather whilst relaxing. This was just as well as we spent a lot of time relaxing! We had the boat from Saturday morning ... read more

Back home and on the Broads for the first time in what must be couple of years, I guess. Seemed really quiet to me, (the boat hire companies must be struggling). Even on a beautiful day we virtually had the place to ourselves. Makes for a better trip that way, so it was good news for us and I expect good news for the Broads too. Don't think I've ever seen terns diving on them before, or as many lily pads, so, maybe less traffic and the long running clean-up process really has improved the water quality. Things seem miles better than they did during the 80's, anyway, so make the most of it before the sea comes crashing in and ruins everything again. I've just got back from plundering the Norfolk Broads with 8 other crew mates in what turned out to be my first farewell party. We hired a brand new 9 birth river cruiser from Wroxham for a total of 4 days. The weather was lovely and as we set off the roof slid back, the Pimms flowed and we wasted no time in soaking up the sun. It was after we returned from an exploration walk up the river bank that I was surprised to find the gang had laid on a pirate themed farewell boat party for me. Ahhh you guys! Thank you all for a fun evening and some strange looks from other boaters as I imitated something more like a country farmer than a menacing pirate. In the evenings we either played Uno, ... read more
