Today I phoned Orange to cancel my contract at the end of the current payment period (i.e. April 17th). After that I will be on a pay as you go contract as though it were once again the early 2000s. I bought a brand new, unlocked, totally non-smart phone a couple of weeks ago in preparation for travelling during which I expect the item to undergo various types of duress and didn't want a fancy £200+ portable computer being trashed or nicked in the process. The Nokia 105 doesn't even have a camera, just Snake and Sudoku. When moving from country to country it seemed sensible to have an unlocked phone in order to buy local sim cards so that Erika and I can keep in contact when apart without having to spend an arseload on ... read more

Following the Lovecraft-referenced northern Indian village of Sarnath, there is another otherworldly named region that Erika and I will encounter during our travels: the Darién Gap. It is a 100 mile stretch of marshland on the border between Panama and Columbia, making it an inevitability when moving from North to South America. It is dubbed a "gap" because the Pan-American Highway does not pass through it at all, breaking the otherwise smooth road links between the two continents and thus making land crossing very difficult. From what I can gather the Darién Gap is treacherous not only because of the landscape but also the cartel activity in the region that has resulted in kidnappings and murders. So the safest options to get into South Ameri... read more

This blog has been set up a little after planning began so this first post will gather together everything that has been done so far, beginning with a rough outline of our route. The first flight has been booked. It leaves Heathrow at 10.30am on Saturday 6th December 2014, flies via Kuwait, and lands at Indira Gandhi International in Delhi at 4.55am the next day. It's going to be a long but no doubt worthwhile flight. There is a part of me that is nervous about this flight because it has been booked via a travel agent called Crystal Travel, which receives variable reviews on the internet. They've contacted me one already about a slight change of flight times however so hopefully that's a good sign of their service and honesty. Last night we booked the ... read more

As dawn broke in Lowestoft it looks like summer has really deserted us as the sky is rather leaden and grey and there is a definite chill in the air as we checked the outside temperature by opening the hotel room window. So long trousers and jersey will be clothing of the day and I think it might be time to consign the sandals and shorts to the suitcase of things we will no longer need on the BBA V2. We are all self contained for breakfast and although we no longer have the microwave we do still have the toaster so toast and jam or peanut butter can still be on the menu for breakfast along with our muesli and yogurt. One thing they tend to skimp on at Travelodge hotels are 3 pin electrical ... read more

Decided after being told it was worthwhile, to head to Norwich. Walked around town, through shops, malls, lanes, parks and found what we thought was the cathedral. It was a cathedral, not THE cathedral. Nonetheless was a good experience even if very cold.... read more

Geo: 52.6281, 1.29935Unfortunately today has gone somewhat pear shaped due to this bloody weather. Lunch cancelled as Dave & Audrey are pretty much snowed in in their village and roads are far too icy to risk driving.Katherine was going to come to Norfolk but again i f she were to get stuck here then she can't get back too the kids.Oh we'll, Chris and I plan to go into Norwich anyway and do some shopping and find a pub lunch in front of a nice open fire. More to come as the day progresses. No open fires but did plenty of shopping, slipping and sliding in the snow. Had a couple of beers before dinner at the white horse with ken, Theresa, Jane & Tony. Had a good laugh with plenty of food and wine. The big freeze ... read more

Geo: 52.6281, 1.29935LondonArrived safely and so far no snow, though the salt gritters are out in force. Emirates chauffeur picked us up hassle free and now on our way to Liverpool street station. Oh! Did I mention that its bloody cold. 8.25am and just gone through hammersmith. Billboard says -3c and the snow has started to fall. Traffic is ...well traffic.10am. Met up with Vicky at Liverpool st Starbucks and now on train to Norwich. The snow is chucking it down now and it's freezing. It feels strange going through east London and seeing how much has changed in the years gone by. Bethnall green, forest gate, Illford etc.The countryside is so beautiful, completely covered in snow. Do birds get cold feet?Slight change of dinner plans due to this weather. Was decided that the little winding ... read more

Not so many people have been to Norwich, but millions know that Norwich is in Anglia. They wouldn't have looked in an atlas or zoomed into the satellite photos on google earth to know it. Nor would they have had to have paid attention in schoolroom geography lessons. Gazillions know Norwich is in "Anglia" ....because the telly told them every Saturday. Just as we've got the jist about where New York sits because of The Apprentice and cop shows, so the same is true with the English jewel in the incredibly near east. Anglia is a local British television station. Their most renowned telly show of all time (the seventies) was intimately bound with Norwich and was introduced, "Live. From Norwich It's the Quiz of the Week." However, instead of featuring a brash whacky haired Donald Trump ... read more

Three weeks to go... and sh****ng myself! After three years of plans falling through due to lack of money, unreliable travel companions and probably a subconcious desire to sabotauge because I just knew I wasn't ready, I am FINALLY going to quit the 9 to 5 and get back to basics! So I'm off to Addis Ababa in just over 3 weeks, to work in the city with a travel company and volunteer in an orphanage in my spare time! I intend to stay for 6 months. Talk about jumping in at the deep end! :)... read more
