Manchester is more than United and City Earlier this year we came across some really cheap flight tickets to Manchester. We hardly knew anything about Manchester but we decided to buy the tickets anyway. Sometimes when we travel we have a clear plan and purpose. At other times we take chances and just go without making any plans at all. This trip to Manchester was one of the latter kind. We didn't even know what we wanted to see when we stepped on board the flight which took us there. Well, we did of course know about the city's two major football teams, Manchester United and Manchester City, so we weren't completely unaware of what the city had to offer. But football is not something we are interested in so we preferred to look elsewhere to ... read more

After a normal, slightly chaotic day at work, involving finding out that the car we were supposed to hire when we got to Alaska was no longer available, we jumped in the car and headed to Manchester for the night. Made it there by 9, will probably be asleep by 10 and then up early to get the airport shuttle at 6.40am. The trip took on a slightly surreal element as we left work, when the entire team gathered to wish us farewell. There were so many hugs and wishes of good luck that we began to wonder if perhaps we had accidentally signed up for permanent emmigration rather than a two week trip.... read more

Our holiday is almost at an end. Just one more day with Kath and Albert in Stalybridge and it will be time to fly home to Melbourne. Most of the day was spent re-packing our bags ... again! It was time to fit in our puffer vests and other heavy clothing and Murano souvenirs that we didn't take with us to the Mediterranean. We also had a poster that I purchased at the Captain Cook Schoolhouse Museum that we had to decide how to get to Australia. It needed a tube to protect it and we needed to decide whether it would fit in one of our bags or if it would be easier to post it to ourselves. We decided to stretch our legs with a walk down to the post office in Stalybridge to ... read more

Today marked the end of our Aegean holiday so we finished off re-packing our bags this morning ready for our flight back to Manchester. After breakfast we brought our bags downstairs and checked out and then settled in to wait in the foyer for the coach that would take us to the airport. Just as we got comfortable the staff advised us that we needed to lug our bags to the hotel down the street as the coach was waiting for us there. Aaargh, panic stations! We stuffed our tablets/e-readers into our hand luggage and made to get our wheely bags for the dash to the hotel down the street. Kath's bag was sitting in front of a HUGE potted plant and as she grabbed for the handle she slightly misjudged and knocked the handle just ... read more

This morning we made our traditional visit to the Crownpoint Shopping Park at Denton. Over the years we have made some excellent purchases over at Denton. We're a bit worried about the formal night on the cruise and wanted to buy some suitably dressy gear so as not to look too casual on the night of the Captain's Dinner!! Bernie thought that if he bought a jacket to wear with his travel pants that he might be able to get away with it. Hmmn, we looked at some jackets in T K Maxx, but their jackets were expensive ... and, frankly, quite horrible. It also became obvious that a jacket with his very jean-like pants was going to look naff. Our next stop was Marks and Spencer where we found there were plenty of reasonably priced ... read more

Ahh, a day with nothing in particular planned. What bliss after five weeks on the go! We slept in before making ourselves a latish breakfast. So nice to be able to choose what to have from the refrigerator and the cupboard without being confronted with a groaning smorgasbord or a full English breakfast. Even though I only needed some fruit and some cereal I couldn't resist a slice (OK two) of toast with lashings of English butter and some marmalade. With access to Kath's washing machine we took the opportunity to freshen up nearly all of our clothes. We have only been rinsing things out in the basins in our rooms since we last machine washed a load of clothes in Avignon so it was fab to be able to give things a proper wash and, ... read more

Another big driving day today as we made our way from Marazion, Cornwall to Stalybridge, Cheshire. Bernie asked Ken to calculate the journey with and without a detour to Plymouth. It was only going to add half an hour to the travel time (plus whatever time we actually spent in Plymouth!) so we decided that we could call in for a very short visit. Plymouth has a long military association which goes back to 1588 when the ships of the English Navy set sail for the Spanish Armada through the mouth of the River Plym. In 1689, in the time of William III, the Devonport Royal Dockyards were built in the Hamoaze area on a section of the River Tamar. Both the Tamar and the Plym flow out through The Sound into the English Channel. The ... read more
