Well, here we are... London! We've been back from the France trip for 5 weeks now, and as homeless bums we've been blessed by the hospitality of many friends & family. Firstly Andrew & Lynette down in Clapham Junction, Pete in Willesden Green (what a great guy!) and now we're staying with Anna & Nick in Harlem, I mean Harlesden at Willesden Junction! They even gave us their bed, what gems! Actually, staying with Anna & Nick has been the most fun, crazy flatting experience since our time at university - they call it 'The Villas' and it's filled entirely with Kiwis & Aussies on their OE. There are 12 people living in the 5 bedroom villa where we're staying, and the villa next door is exactly the same. The backyard is shared, complete with communal ... read more

My Dearest Britain, After being here nearly a month, I am beginning to finally settle in to life together. Too bad I have to leave you in 7 short days. You've suststained me on a sumptuous diet of the following things, almost exclusively, since late August: Lamb donar, gingersnaps, coffee, tea, beer (ale, more precisely), coca-cola (a taste of the homeland), and sushi from Marks & Spencer. Sadly, I don't think I'm rich enough to be in this relationship with you...I have averaged a steady clip of #150 (pounds...i guess the keyboard lies when it offers the pound symbol as an option) per week, not including lodging, and am beginning to feel the pain of it. I just can't be your sugar-daddy any longer. I am looking forward to the change of prices that South Korea ... read more

Dan here. I just wanted to show you a couple pictures of the Willesden Green flat we were forced out of by sickening mold. In terms of conveying the feel of the place, this will just have to do until they perfect Smell-o-Vision. (And on the second day, Ashley said: "From what I've seen so far, London seems a lot like Eugene." 'Twas then I knew we had to move.)... read more

Well we made it! The flight over was very long, and the seats on the plane were fairly small, making it hard to get comfortable or sleep. We had a little delay in Frankfurt which seemed at the time to be a lot longer than it actually was. Once in London we sailed easily through customs, and hopped in a cab and made our way to Willesden Green. The area seems nice, and has a very diverse population, which is fun. Our Flat. Our Flat is essentially a small detatched shed in the back garden of a row house. The shed is almost nice. It is very quiet because it is surrounded by other backyards, and we can hear birds, and not much else. The main problem with the Flat is that it is very moldy ... read more

Sunday February 13th - day 1. It is 7am on Sunday morning and I am too nervous to eat much breakfast. It is time to pack the rucksack with the final items and to use this opportunity to leave a few more items behind. Arrived at London Victoria train station at 9.15am which means it is only 45 minutes before the train leaves. Three of us are starting this journey - Michael (an old school friend from Bournemouth), Heather (his girlfriend) and myself. There are about 10 people standing on the platform to wave us goodbye - relatives and friends - who knows when we will see them again? We have reserved seats and in 12 hours time we will have arrived at our first destination Koblenz which is situated at the confluence of the Rhine ... read more

It is 41 years ago that I was sitting in my flat in London counting down the hours before my 4 month trip to Australia started. I guess it is the same for most people but chance played a big part. I had started a new job which did not live up to expectations as instead of career development, I was required to spend months learning the company ways starting at the bottom of the ladder. Luckily an Aussie girl was temping in the office and she created the desire to travel. My flatmates and I returned from the pub one night and there was an advert on TV for the £5 emigration package to Australia. We decided to investigate but by the time I had collected paperwork from the Aussie High Commission, the other three ... read more
